Hunters in the Sky
Filed under: Uncategorized Large birds have always amazed me. As a child I would gaze up at the sky wishing I could soar like a bird and fly wherever my wings took me. I wondered what the world looked like to birds and what they thought of us as they looked down at us. Did they see us as small creatures down below? Did they feel smarter than us because we had to stay on the ground or build planes to go in the air. Because large birds always had my interest I got interested in falconry. (No Ratings Yet)
The Fine Art of Falconry
Filed under: Uncategorized The sport of falconry is a true art form that can require hours of hard work to perfect. This is a pastime that adults should enjoy undertaking as it is not suitable for children. If you choose to learn falconry you need to be completely devoted to learning the sport. You are going to be training a bird of prey to hunt for you while flying free then accepting to return to captivity when they have completed their task. Many purists of the sport claim that it is a lifestyle not a hobby. They state that if you become a falconer you must devote time to your birds each day all year long. Additionally you must be prepared to take some resistance from some groups. There are many animal rights activists that do not believe that falconry is right. They believe that the practice of falconry interferes with a falcons natural hunting process.

INTRODUCTION
My name is Roy Priest. I live in Cloverdale, beautiful British Columbia, Canada. I was introduced to falconry through a Sportsman's Show in 1963. George Galicz, a well known local falconer, was exhibiting his birds of prey. I was mesmerized by the beautiful male Kestrel he had on display. George let me hold it on my bare hand and I was hooked. In order to be able to have a bird like that he told me I had to join the B.C. Falconry Association and get permission from my parents. They were used to me bringing all manner of animals home and readily agreed. The first bird I trained was a Red-tailed Hawk. That particular bird was probably the tamest bird I ever had. We were inseparable. Since that time I have flown Kestrels, Red tails, Peregrines, Prairies, Merlins, Luggers, Coopers, Harris and Goshawks in B.C., Lanners in England and Merlins and Prairies in Saskatchewan. While in Saskatchewan I assisted in the release of Peregrines in Downtown Regina . There had been successful releases in Saskatoon and this was to be Regina's first. I acted as a hack attendant, feeding and tracking the birds for about 2 months.

Hunting falcon with hood and bell.
by Shawn E. Carroll A swift bird, gliding high above the grassy plain, is the focal point of a group of hunters scattered below. The falcon, its identity betrayed by its size, speed, and shape appears as merely a speck cutting across the sky like a shooting star. It suddently tucks its wings and begins to dive, its stream-lined silhouette growing slightly larger, until a flock of mallards on the small lake take notice and begin frantically to disperse. But for one duck, slightly too young and inexperienced, it is too late. The peregrine has already chosen its feathered target, and the duck is killed instantly as the peregrine slams its razor-sharp talons into its flesh. The two birds fall to the ground together as the men emit a muffled cheer and begin trekking toward the landing site to recover the prey and the falcon. This mystical scene has been repeated for thousands of years, from the sands of Arabia to the mountains of East Asia or the prairies of the American Great Plains. Little has changed fundamentally in the sport or, as some would argue the

Falconry
Training
Falconers deal with birds in three stages of life.
  • An "eyass" is a young bird taken from the nest before it is ready to fly. Once it is ready to fly, a young bird – like the peregrines in A FALCONER’S MEMOIR – is "hacked," allowed to fly free until it is ready to hunt its own food. This helps the bird develop its flying skills. Then, the bird is returned to captivity. A "passager" is any young bird that already can fly that is taken while it is still in its first-year plumage. A "haggard" is a bird captured as an adult and therefore of unknown age; often, the law prohibits capturing birds of mating age.
The beginner (Apprentice) will be required to work with an experienced falconer for two years. Plus, apprentices are generally limited to two choices of bird: the American kestrel or the red-tailed hawk, both common raptors in the United States. The apprentice’s first bird must be obtained from the wild and beginners are required to capture a "passager" or first-year bird that already has learned how to fly. More experienced falconers at the General Class or Master Class have the option of obtaining a nestling (or "eyass") and can choose from a larger variety of birds – anything not endangered or threatened. They even can acquire young birds from captive breeders.

From LoveToKnow 1911
FALCONRY (Fr. fauconnerie, from Late Lat. falco, falcon ), the art of employing falcons and hawks in the chase, often termed Hawking. Falconry was for many ages one of the principal sports of the richer classes, and, since many more efficacious methods and appliances for the capture of game undoubtedly existed, it is probable that it has always been carried on as a pure sport . The antiquity of falconry is very great. There appears to be little doubt that it was practised in Asia at a very remote period, for which we have the concurrent testimony of various Chinese and Japanese works, some of the latter being most quaintly and yet spiritedly illustrated. It appears to have been known in China some 2000 years B.C., and the records, of a king Wen Wang, who reigned over a province of that country 689 B.C., prove that the art was at that time in very high favour. In Japan it appears to have been known at least 600 years B.C., and probably at an equally early date in India Arabia Persia and Syria . Sir A. H. Layard, in his

40. Sports As Art
Is falconry an Art?
http://www.chronique.com/Library/Chivalry/sports.htm
Sports as Art
by Brian R. Price
AKA SCA Brion Thornbird ap Rhys, Earl and Knight, OL
September 11, 1995
I have thought for a long time about whether or not hunting, falconry, and equestrian ‘arts’ should properly be called arts, or whether we are looking at something altogether new. Are they martial exercises? Should the expert practitioners of these arts be rewarded laurels, pelicans, or knighthoods? I don’t have the final answer to this question, but I hope to advance some thoughts to stimulate discussion and to crystallize my own thinking on the subject. In a medieval context, hunting, falconry, and equestrian are all noble pursuits. skills were considered the pastimes, the sports and perquisites of the nobility. They were, in a very real sense, sports, much in the way that tournaments were sports. Later, the nobles also added other sports, golf and tennis, for example. If we accept that these are indeed medieval activities of the nobility, two questions remain; Are these sports arts? And should all activities lead to a peerage? I will not attempt to answer the second question in this essay, but will rather focus on the first. Frequently, I have heard the argument advanced that there is an ‘art’ to good falconry, horsemanship, and hunting. I am dubious at best about this claim. Certainly there is an element of performance in certain equestrian activities, something akin to modern gymnastics where we judge the performance based upon a mixture of difficulty and elegance. But gymnastics remains a sport, not comparable to, say, ballet. The communities are different because there are different expectations. In ballet or dance, the refinement is used as a tool to communicate a message for ballet to be raised to a fine art. In its simplest case, there is not necessarily a competition between dancers to get their messages across. All work together to create the message. In a sport, by contrast, the competitors strive against one another to reach a specified goalperhaps the goal is a perfect performance.
