How did people hunt before the invention of the gun?
Unknown to most, man has hunted with raptors for over 4000 years.
Now you can experience the incredible connection between man and wild animal. Falconry hunts are conducted on the Gunflint Trail and in the Grand Marais-North Shore of Lake Superior area. We operate from mid October through mid-February. Our mission is to help human beings realize the realities of our natural world. Whether it's through our educational or natural hunting programs, we'll educate you about birds of prey, our environment and the harsh struggle all wild creatures must endure to survive. Redtail Hawk holding onto her first grouse caught with humans. Birds of prey, also known as "raptors", were replaced by the gun and other mechanized items as hunting weapons. Falconry, sometimes called "hawking," requires an incredible amount of time and energy, not to mention a special use permit to capture, possess and hunt with a wild animal. Intriguing enough, it is the thrill of the chase, not the kill, why we hunt with a bird of prey. Services offered: Educational Programs including slide shows and flying bird programs. Offered all year.

Ancient Falconry
- 6 Jan 2001 By Keith Dobney Page 1 of 6 Click here for others comments about this article Falconry has long been regarded as a noble sport, and it has a very ancient pedigree. According to traditional views, people first began to use tame birds of prey for hunting game in central Asia during the first or second millennium BC. Through trade and other contacts, the practice then extended westwards into the Middle East, and eventually to Europe. But that theory raises a major puzzle. The first artistic views of falconry come not from the Far East, but from Turkey. Several carvings from around 1500 BC show a large bird on the fist of a human figure. Grasped in the same fist is the figure of a hare (presumably the quarry) held by the back legs. In both cases, some researchers have interpreted these carvings as purely religious or symbolic scenes. But if these examples do indeed depict hawking, then the sport is at least 3,500 years old in Western Eurasia. New meat on old bones
Excavation at Quermez Dere in Northern Iraq Photo - Keith Dobney In recent years, archaeologists have excavated many early human settlements in Israel, Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Iran which date back to 8000-10,000 BC. Among the remains, they have consistently uncovered the bones of birds of prey. Most researchers interpret these bones as remnants of food left by the humans living at those sites, or as elements of religious activities.

Getting Started
Glossary of falconry terms Help Finding a Sponsor American Falconry recognizes that some of the readers might not be familiar with the realities of keeping a bird. Here we will explain some of those questions you may have. Let's start with the legal aspects of keeping a raptor in the United States for hunting. First you must have a Federal and State falconry license. This is provided by your State Game and Fish department. The only state that still doesn't have falconry regulations is Hawaii. Therefore it's illegal to hunt game with a raptor there. You must first have a falconry license before you possess a raptor, or it will be confiscated and you will be cited. State have their own regulations and guidelines that meet or exceed federal standards. So contact them directly for information. Next let's talk about obtaining a falconry license. It's not easy, but it's that way to protect the birds and the sport from abuse. First you take a written test on biology, training, and veterinary aspects of raptors, to pass you must score at least 80%. Next you have to find a sponsor to train you. Ckick here for more information on finding a spoonsor. He will have a general or master falconry permit, and sponsor your two year apprenticeship. Then you must build a suitable facility to house your raptor and obtain necessary equipment. This will be physically inspected by a Game and Fish representative. After paying the state fee you become a licensed falconer. Now you can trap a raptor, usually a Redtail hawk.

"We'll e'en to it like French falconers, flying at havoc" Shakespeare Clients hawking with Harris Hawks on a Shropshire hillside - an experience many would like Welcome to the world of Steve Wright Falconry Based at The Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Country Park, Sutton Cheney, Warwickshire, CV13 0AD
Steve Wright has been flying birds of prey since 1976, when he started with an injured kestrel. Since then he has founded and run Heart of England Falconry in Stratford-upon-Avon until 2002, when he took an easier lifestyle and concentrated on his outside displays in the summer months and his hawking days in the winter. In this pleasant occupation he is aided (sometimes) by his famous Hawkwise Brittanys who can always be seen with him. He now works in conjunction with Rebecca Friar, with whom he founded Hawkwise Falconry , and they offer thorough tuition in all aspects of the sport (see our web page on courses) and also supply falconry equipment and food. Steve has contributed significantly to modern falconry. The Independent Bird Register, and its annual Directory, are both products of his invention, as is their web-marketing Birdmart. He also founded the precursor to the Falconry Fair, now a major national event. In those early days it was called a Falcon Show and was the first event to enable falconers to meet in numbers without the activity of a field meet to distract them.

Willows Falconry Centre
Birds of a Feather Flying Displays
Hi Welcome to our Website We have been running Birds Of A Feather for 24 years, originally as a mobile display demonstrating our birds at Fetes, Fairs and County Shows all over the UK. In 1999 we moved to the Falconry Centre and duly gave up mobile displays (we are now both gettting a bit old to run all over the countryside!!) The Falconry Centre 2 years ago started to undergo a revamp. The aim was to remove all the old avairies and weatherings and to extend the centre. This was completed in March 2007. During the rebuild Pete came up with an idea to incorporate a special little area for our little visitors - so we called it the Under 5's area - although any age is welcome.
In this area we have a very special little chap who is called Bracken and he's a Barn Owl who has now been retired from the flying demonstrations as he is the grand old age of 18. You can also meet Eric and Erica our Ferrets, Otis the Indian Eagle Owl, Kullih the Kestrel and of course not forgetting Poppy the African Grey Parrot, Prickles the African Pygmy Hedgehog and Herman the Tortoise, who pop out from time to time in good weather to say hello.
