Home Weapons Clubs Feedback Fencing - "The art or sport of swordplay" For many centuries fighting a duel with swords was a common way of settling an argument. Many men were killed in such duels. About 600 years ago, to better defend themselves in duels, men began practising the use of the sword with skilled fencing masters. The game of fencing grew out of such practising. In fencing, the ends of the swords are blunted and the players are masked. A touch is counted as a wound. Three kinds of swords are used. The swords are for different types of fencing. The foil is a slender, flexible and pointed sword. The touch must be made with the point on the trunk of the body. The epee, or duelling sword, is stiffer. The touch must be with the point but it can be made anywhere on the opponent. The sabre has a heavier blade. Touches are scored with the point or edge on any part of the opponent except the legs.

  • When most people think about fencing, they are reminded of swashbuckling movies such as "The Three Musketeers," "Robin Hood," "The Mark of Zorro," "The Buccaneer" or "The Princess Bride." In these movies, the hero fights by making broad sweeping motions with his sword and running about the stage or scene, and the winner is clear when one of the fighters is wounded or dies. But modern fencing is a sport with rapid, subtle movements and fast actions. Often the action in an engagement is over within seconds.

This site is dedicated to the study of Historical fencing.

Research Information Training Materials Links Papers ... About the Author
Elizabethan Fencing and the Art of Defence The Arte of Defence was studied and taught by masters in the late 15th and 16th Centuries. The most famous of the teachers typically came from Italy. Until the advent of the smallsword and the French schools of fence, the Italians and to a lesser degree the Spanish , enjoyed the role of the most sought after teachers of the Arte of Defence. This is not to say that earlier fencing schools did not exist. The Germans had fine schools and some of the oldest existant fencing manuals come from Germany. I have very little on the German schools and would appreciate any information in this area. The English at the end of the 16th Century followed the continental fencers in taking on the use of the rapier. In defense of English technique, George Silver published a treatise called the Paradoxes of Defence . This treatise was used to espouse the use of the English weapons and to downplay the use of the rapier. Silver hated the Italians and Spanish and made sure that his readers knew that these styles were more dangerous for the user than good English practices. He also wrote a treatise on his Paradoxes called Brief Instructions . Two Italian Elizabethan Masters of note were Saviolo and Di Grassi. Saviolo' s works cover not only his view on fencing mechanics but also honor. Di Grassi in the author's opinion is one of the finer manuals translated to English in this time period. Although Di Grassi predates the Elizabethan period proper, his manual which was orginally published in 1570 was translated into English in the late Elizabethan period. There is a move now to compile electronic copies of existing early fencing manuals. Some translation is also being done. As I obtain manuals (or links to manuals) I will add them into the period manuals section.

    Fencing FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
This is a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) with answers, compiled for the UseNet newsgroup rec.sport.fencing. It is intended to reduce repetitive discussions on the Net by addressing commonly raised topics. This document is maintained by Morgan Burke (morgan@sitka.triumf.ca). Contributions, corrections, and suggestions are welcome. Most of the questions and answers pertain to FIE (Olympic) Fencing; Japanese fencing (kendo, kenjustsu, iaido, etc.) is treated in a separate FAQ list ("Japanese Sword Arts") that can occasionally be found in the newsgroups rec.sport.fencing or rec.martial-arts, or on the IAIDO-L mailing list (see section 3.8 for details). The Japanese Sword Arts FAQ is maintained by Neil Gendzwill (gendzwill@SEDSystems.ca). The Fencing FAQ is presented in three parts:
  • GENERAL : common questions about starting fencing, training, and rules of competition
  • EQUIPMENT : fencing equipment, maintenance, and troubleshooting
