The ferret is a very close relative of the polecat, but it is as yet unclear whether it is a domesticated form of the European Polecat , the Steppe Polecat , or some hybrid of the two. Being so closely related to polecats, ferrets are quite easily able to hybridize with them, and this has occasionally resulted in feral colonies of ferret-polecat hybrids that have been perceived to have caused damage to native fauna, perhaps most notably in New Zealand. As a result, some parts of the world have imposed restrictions on the keeping of ferrets.

In many countries, controlling shareholders are accused of tunneling, transferring resources from companies where they have few cash flow rights to ones where they have more cash flow rights. Quantifying the extent of such tunneling, however, has proven difficult because of its illicit nature. This paper develops a general empirical technique for quantifying tunneling. We use the responses of different firms to performance shocks to map out the flow of resources within a group of firms and to quantify the extent to which the marginal dollar is tunneled. We apply our technique to data on Indian business groups. The results suggest a significant amount of tunneling between firms in these groups. how dangerous is it for the ferret when he's underground? I saw a picture once where the ferret has come out and looks pretty bloodied and injured.
I keep thinking that I should be going ferreting, or rabbit hunting; because I have run out of our own chickens from the freezer and I don't really want to buy shop chicken, although I will probably have to. I don't know if I could kill a rabbit, I'd feel bad to take that rabbit away from its family, lol. But then it's had a nice wild life before being hit on the head.

My name is Ken Knowles, I have always had ferrets and dogs, when working on a farm or just walking in the fields I have always had a dog and some ferrets and a few nets with me. I have bread all sorts of ferrets, some very good ones and some not so good and some that will always be wild. I also breed African Hedgehogs and fly Radio Control Model Aircraft. Me when I was young Me now Me flying Ferreting is an art, not just a matter of laying a net over a rabbit hole, throwing a ferret down and hoping to get a rabbit out. Your nets have to be laid out so they don't get stuck on twigs and brambles and will not close when a rabbit runs into it. Your ferret need to be fit and not just taken from it's cage after an easy summer and expected to run down holes yards and yards long chasing and killing rabbits without laying up. Your ferrets must be housed in solid cages with room to climb and move around, your nets should be hung out to get the smell of summer, make different nets for different jobs, short ones for when the undergrowth is thick, long ones for two holes that are togeather and so on.

Ferreting
Today, ferreting is termed a field sport and is when a group of people head off with their ferrets, dogs, birds of prey and guns (the latter three occasionally, not always) to rid the countryside of rabbits. The hunters drape purse nets over the holes around the warren and then place their ferrets into the tunnels. The ferrets chase the rabbits out and they are caught in the nets where they are dispatched by hand. Lurchers, a type of greyhound-looking dog, and terriers are also used to catch the rabbits as they bolt from their warren, as are hawks, which swoop down and grab the rabbit in their talons. Hunters also use guns to kill the rabbits as they come racing out. It is not a sport I find appealing but I do appreciate the fact that, if done right, it is a more humane way to keep the rabbit population down rather than putting poison bait down to kill the rabbits. Certainly here in Western Australia farmers have contacted WAFFS and invited members up to their properties with their ferrets to get rid of rabbits. And obviously during the tough times, when money and food was scarce, people used to take their ferrets out to hunt rabbits as a matter of necessity, so that they could feed their families.

ICABS urges ban on horrific ferreting
25 July 2008 ICABS has renewed its call for ferretting to be banned after a newspaper article highlighted the appalling cruelty of the activity. A profile of a ferretting enthusiast published in a midlands newspaper told of how ferrets are used to blind rabbits by biting into their eyes. ICABS has called on the Department of Agriculture to act urgently to end the horrendous practice. Ferreting involves sending a ferret down a burrow to trap rabbits. The rabbits are either chased out of the hole and into nets or viciously gripped in place by the ferret while a hunter digs away the earth from above them. The following is a ferreter's first-hand description of the activity published in the Westmeath Topic of March 13th, 2008. "On a typical day I'd get up at six in the morning while it's still dark. People contact me, often lads with greyhounds. These lads would be looking for rabbits...I bring my nets, cages, and of course my ferret finder. It's a collar you put on the ferret before he's sent underground. It beeps like a metal detector, so you know where he is...It's handier, because he 'pooches' the rabbit ('It's a certain kind of cul-de-sac where the rabbit goes up into to hide, where the ferret tries to tear at him to make him move). If he doesn't move the rabbit you have to use a barn spade (which is called a ferreting bar) to dig him out...You have two different types of hunting ferret; you have the 'eye' ferret and you have the 'brain' ferret. An eye ferret in a hole only goes for the rabbit's eye - he blinds him. The 'brain' ferret, he'll bite straight onto the head between the ears."

Ferrets, Ferreting and Rabbits have been a very big part of my life over the past fifty odd years and believe it or not I am still picking up bits of information and tips from ferreting men with whom I have the pleasure of meeting at "Field Days" and at Game and Country Fairs. Especially at our own N. Ireland Game and Country Fair which has progressed from Clandeboye to Shane's Castle and now to Ballywalter Park.
Twenty-five years seems a long time but the "Fairs" only took place in the second half of my hunting life as it were. It makes me feel ancient. The pursuit of field sports has been in my family for generations and the art and craft has been faithfully passed on from fathers to sons and so in my early days my father duly passes on his experience to me.
In those days money was scarce and rabbits were plentiful so every rabbit in the net brought much needed money into the house and food on the table. I sometimes think I missed a part of the sport when I was a youth because many a time the rabbit ended up in the bag by fair as well as foul means. What I can tell you is that if one is hunting for the pot a lot has to be learned in a very short time.

http://www.shootingcommunity.co.uk/ferreting.htm
Ferreting
Ferreting is the popular field sport that uses ferrets, a relative of the European Polecat and a member of the "mustelid" family, to control rabbits to reduce the damage rabbits cause to agricultural and forestry crops in the United Kingdom. Unchecked, rabbits can cause millions of pounds in lost revenue for the UK's farmers and the use of ferrets is an effective control mechanism to manage the population of wild rabbits.
The use of ferrets to hunt rabbits has a long history, there are accounts of ferreting described as far back as the ancient Greeks. The first mention of ferrets in the UK come from the 12th century when owning a ferret seemed to hold some status in society.
So, what does ferreting involve?
There are a number of ways that ferrets can be used, below is a brief summary of the main methods. Most ferreting takes place in the winter months as vegetation will have died back making access to the burrow entrances easier and reducing the chance of a ferret coming across a nest of young rabbit kits underground which often results in a holed up ferret. Purse Netting
This is by far the most common way to use ferrets and involves introducing the ferret into the tunnel network that rabbits use whilst all entrances to the tunnels are covered with a purse net:
A purse net is a net which is pegged at one corner with a running loop around the edge. The nets are placed over the entrance to holes and secured in place with pegs
