Your Guide To Ferrets
Ferrets
Ferrets are domestic mammals whose fur can be brown, black, white or
mixed. The practice of raising ferrets is called ferreting. They grow
to about 20 inches long and weigh about 2 to 4 pounds. The average
lifespan of these animals is 7 to 10 years. They have been
domesticated for about 2500 years and were originally used to hunt
rabbits. Some of these animals are still used for this purpose in some
parts of the world.
The name ferret comes from the Latin word meaning little thief due to
the instinct of the animals for secreting small items away in hiding
places. Ferrets do live in the wild, especially in the Shetland Islands area of Scotland and New Zealand, where they were introduced to help combat the problems farmers were having with rabbits. They are able to get down into the holes and "ferret' out the rabbits. Since the 1980's ferrets have become increasingly popular as household pets. They do spend up to 18 hours a day sleeping and are most active during the evening and night. They like to play games and have a

Ferrets as pets is a relatively new concept and it is only in the last 10 - 20 years that ferrets as house pets has caught on. Ferrets as working companions, however, is a relationship dating back centuries. Ferreting is a field sport, and the differences between field sports and blood sports are myriad. Blood sports involve an animal being transported to an enclosed area with no means of escape, whereas in field sports the animals are hunted in their natural habitat with every chance of escape. Any ferreter will tell you about the rabbits that have slipped through nets or used undiscovered bolt holes. "How the B**!!Y H**L did he get out?" is a question often hissed through clenched teeth. The rabbit is a pest species. The damage done to agriculture alone cost millions of pounds every year. More sad is to see keen gardeners whose hard work is slowly destroyed by rabbits, or young trees planted as part of the new forest schemes stripped bare of bark and succumbing to disease. It should be noted that the law (N.F.W.S: Pests Act 1954, Section 1) requires people to deal with pest species living on their land or be held responsible for the damage perpetrated by the pests. British Rail learned this law the hard way. The question of how to control rabbits has five answers gassing, snaring, shooting, myxomatosis or ferreting.

    What is Ferreting?
Ferreting involves sending ferrets into rabbit warrens to drive the rabbits outside. Nets are placed over the rabbit holes to catch them when they come out into the open. Small dogs and falcons are sometimes used instead of ferrets. Ferreting is a field sport, which means that the rabbits are chased within in their natural environment (rather than in a tight space that restricts their movements). This gives them slight opportunities to escape the ferrets. Although it is a form of hunting, ferreting is not as inhumane as other forms of rabbit hunting, which include gassing and poisoning. The rabbits that are caught don't endure anything like as much suffering as the foxes that are hunted in fox hunts. The rabbits that do come to the surface are usually killed as quickly as possible to reduce suffering - often through dislocation of the neck - and there is no blood involved in this. They are then usually handed to a local butcher, who can sell the meat (hence the need for blood to not be involved). There are no chemicals involved, so other animals are not affected. The rabbits that escape are left alone.

JOHN BURGESS, a working ferret man for more than 20 years, is a familiar face at ferret shows throughout the Midlands and the North of England. He lives outside Grimsby and works his ferrets across a stretch of North Lincolnshire. Here, he tells Ferrets First why the ancient sport of ferreting is the best way to control Britain's rabbit population.
RABBITS ARE a serious agricultural pest. Crop damage runs into millions of pounds annually and land owners are legally obliged to control rabbit numbers. Of all methods used, I consider ferreting to be as humane as any, and more so than some. Ferreting is practised by some professional pest controllers but it is mainly done by amateur working ferret enthusiasts, the rabbits caught being either for their own consumption or sold to offset the costs of the sport. One thing is certain, they do not get rich doing it. Briefly, ferreting is carried out in the following way. Nets are placed over each of the holes in the warren or burrow. The ferret is put inside to bolt a rabbit into the net. The ferreter dispatches the rabbit with one deft movement. Its neck is broken and death is instantaneous.

I now own 100 purse nets made of nylon, I found the hemp ones hard work as they need to be dried thoroughly after each outing and if they are not, they rot and allow rabbits to escape, (as did happen to me with 1 of my borrowed hemp nets) some people prefer the traditional hemp nets and lots of ferreters disagree over the best material, hemp, nylon or spun nylon, I prefer 10z nylon nets they are reasonably cheap, heavy and easy to use, but ask 10 ferreters and they will have 10 different ferreting bags, full of 10 lots of different types of nets.
I had loads of fun and sold the surplus rabbits to friends and acquaintances I saved the money from these rabbits and bought more purse nets, there was a farm shop near to where I lived that sold cheap nylon nets and I obtained 10, I gave back the 6 borrowed nets (including the one with the hole where the rabbit had bolted straight through the old dusty net), I then purchased more nets via mail order and increased my stock from 10 to 20 then to 30, as I sold more rabbits. Some of these original nets are still in service with my young brother on his infrequent ferreting trips. Now to the reason for this little rambling what do you need to go ferreting, when I started I had 1 ferret, 6 nets and a whippet x greyhound running dog.

Picture taken at the End of the Day. These rabbits were taken home skinned and eaten. The majority of my rabbits are sold to two local butchers, who prefer ferreted rabbits as they are clean and un-marked (no bruise's or shot) and are sold on into the human food chain as healthy, organic, free range food.
ferreting with longnets and my two polecat jill ferrets
Another picture at the End of the day's ferreting. The longnet is in blue bag, the Hazel pegs support the net when it is set out (see picture of longnet above when set). The small green bag contains my ferret locator ,ferrets occasionally kill rabbits below ground and need to be dug out- hence the spade. Ferreting is best done quietly which assists the rabbits in bolting as they can't hear you and flee un-interrupted from the ferrets, hopefully into the nets you have set.
