Jumps
There are six major jumps in figure skating. All six are landed on a right back outside edge, but have different takeoffs, by which they may be distinguished. The two categories of jumps are toe jumps and edge jumps. Toe jumps are launched by tapping the toe pick of one skate into the ice, and include (in order of difficulty from easiest to hardest):
  • Toe loops, which take off from the back outside edge of the right foot and are launched by the left toe pick (toe walleys are similar, but take off from the back inside edge of the right foot); Flips, which take off from the back inside edge of the left foot and are launched by the right toe pick;

    In the Wii version there are six songs to skate to, such as Swan Lake, Ave Maria, Fantaise Impromptu, the Nutcracker, and other classics. In Figure Skating, only the Wii Remote is used. The character that is picked will skate laps around the rink, and the player must shake the Wii Remote according to the arrows. For example, if there is a down arrow, the Wii remote should be shook in a slapping motion.
    Nintendo DS Version
    As seen in DS. The Nintendo DS version of Figure Skating is a bit different from the Wii one. The player holds the stylus and drags the character where he or she wants it to go and then uses the stylus to perform spins and other tricks. There are three songs on the DS version including Carmen, Die Fledermaus, and a song from the Nutcracker.

      Trivia
      • Another figure skating event, Men's special figures, was on the program only once, at the 1908 Summer Games. In Sapporo in 1972, Ondrej Nepala of Czechoslovakia, who had competed at the 1964 Olympics as a 13-year-old, won the men's figure skating title. America's Dorothy Hamill and Britain's John Curry won golds in figure skating in Innsbruck 1976. The first black athlete to win a Winter Olympic medal was Debi Thomas of the United States, finishing third in figure skating at the 1988 Games in Calgary. The 1994 figure-skating competition was dominated by the events of Tonya and Nancy. In the end Nancy Kerrigan won the silver behind Ukraine's Oksana Baiul. In Nagano in 1998, 15-year-old American figure skater Tara Lipinski became the youngest athlete to win a gold medal at the Winter Games.
