Words from a Modern-Day Warrior
Can the Filipino Arts Sustain a Full-Time School? (Part II)
There are those who believe that the Filipino arts are not aesthetically pleasing enough to attract students. At least, not enough students to pay a two thousand dollar lease. In the FMAs, we offer many reasons to study:
  • a good, strong form of self-defense it can be a great workout, unlike the workout of many other forms of fighting we teach fighting skills much faster than many other styles
Can the arts help a kid get good grades? Can an FMA school be a cheap alternative to After School Day Care? Can it be set to music, like Tae Bo? Man, I should slap you for those questions. www.martialtalk.com/forum Sifus Sabumnim explains that he is not teaching Karate and is not called a Sensei . Part of the recruitment and sales process is education , and that will make a huge difference in whether or not a school sinks or swims. And this brings me back to the subject of how Thank you for reading my blog. Please tell your friends about us!

Character - A ruffian has no place in Arnis let alone in sports. Refinement in character is important.
Sincerity - It is the sincerity in ones self to others, also to the art.
Discipline - Proper behavior in the sport and in life itself will be the gauge of success.
Self-Control - Is important for without it, life and the good health of another maybe lost. Etiquette - One's norm and standard should never be imposed upon others. One should learn how to respect others. Student's Loyalty - Loyalty to the art, to a fellow player, and to his teacher.

Testing
Testing is a difficult time for everyone. The testing determines whether or not you are capable of advancing in rank. If you pass, then you receive your new rank at the next class after the belts and certificates arrive, if you don't, then you train for 6 months and try again. Testing occurs only twice a year, once in January and once in July. Testing is difficult and you can fail (although I've yet to see that happen to anyone). It is meant to put pressure on those taking the test because it shows how much knowledge you have under pressure as in real life situations.

Filipino martial arts refers to ancient and newer fighting methods devised in the area now known as the Philippines , the most popular of which are known as Arnis/Eskrima/Kali . The intrinsic need for self-preservation was the genesis of these systems. Throughout the ages, invaders and evolving local conflict imposed new dynamics for combat in the islands now making up the Philippines. The Filipino people developed battle skills as a direct result of an appreciation of their ever-changing circumstances. They learned often out of necessity how to prioritize, allocate and utilize common resources in combative situations. Filipinos have been heavily influenced by the phenomenon of cultural and linguistic mixture. Some of the specific mechanisms responsible for cultural and martial change extended from phenomena such as war, political and social systems, technology, trade and of course, simple practicality. Filipino martial arts have seen an increase in prominence due to several Hollywood movies and the teachings of modern masters such as Venancio "Anciong" Bacon Dan Inosanto Teddy Buot Sam Buot ... Filipino Arts Camp March 27-28th, 2010 MISSION
The Armas De Mano Filipino Arts Academy is dedicated to provide services in the instruction of Filipino Martial Arts using traditional and non-traditional approaches to the learning process. Developed centuries ago, the teachers of today have learned from the great pioneers, and expanded their knowledge through creativity and adjustment to fit today's socio-economic culture. Much like the pioneers of the past. the Armas De Mano Academy looks to the pioneers of today for guidance and instruction in the preservation of these systems. The student is provided the opportunity to study from those pioneers who are still with us today, as well as instructors of today who challenge themselves to be "out of the box" thinkers. " As the founder of the Academy, my vision is to provide a solid foundation of the basics in the various styles/systems of Filipino Arts, and provide a setting in which the student can advance their skills by blending concepts and principles employed from the teachings of myself and other affiliated schools and instructors."
"I am where I am at because of my hard work and dedication to explore other systems. But most importantly, I continue to expand my knowledge because each of my teacher's continue to share their knowledge."

The Filipino sculpture tradition began in the mid 19th century. Guillermo Tolentino was the artist that really brought this artistic movement to a peak. His sculpture the Bonifacio Monument not only illustrated culturally significant themes, but it also demonstrated that artists from the Philippines could hold their own in the art world against European classical artists.

By learning about the cultures and history of this geographical area you will better be able to understand the motivations behind sculpture themes. Learning about the native plant life and geology of the Philippines will also help you to appreciate the materials, textures and colors used in Filipino sculptures. Finally, learning the stories of the artists themselves will help you to understand and appreciate the shapes, contours and interpretations of Filipino sculptures.
