It was devised around 1909 by Thomas F. Ryan in Toronto, Ontario , at his Toronto Bowling Club , in response to customers who complained that the ten-pin game was too strenuous. He cut five tenpins down to about 75% of their size, and used hand-sized hard rubber balls, thus inventing the original version of five-pin bowling.

The balls in five pin bowling are small enough to fit in the hand and therefore have no fingerholes. At the end of the lane there are five pins arranged in a V. In size they are midway between

5. 5-pin Bowling
A uniquely Canadian sport, 5pin bowling is very popular in Canada.
Sports 5-Pin Bowling Most of us have heard of bowling. A sport where you throw a big ball, down a lane and try to knock pins over. You are probably familiar with 10-pin bowling. In Canada, one version of the game only has 5 pins and very small balls. In 1908, Thomas F. Ryan, a Canadian, wanted a bowling game that was quicker to play and more gentile. He felt the balls were too big and heavy, and there were too many pins making the game too long. Ryan, developed a smaller ball and used only 5 pins in his version of the game. The object of the game of 5-pin is the same as 10-pin, knock as many pins over as you can, using a ball rolled at the pins, however there are some differences. The ball used in 5-pin is much smaller then 10-pin and generally weighs about 3 pounds. They are about the size of a softball. There are no holes in the ball. Like 10-pin, you can purchase your own custom designed balls or use the balls provided at the bowling alley. Like the balls, the pins used in 5-pin bowling are smaller then 10-pin. They also have a rubber band around the lower half of the pin. There are only 5 pins to knock down as well. Scoring is also different. Each pin is assigned a points value. The headpin is worth 5 points, the next two pins on each side are worth 3 points, and the outside pins are valued at 2 points each, for a total of 15 points.

When ten-pin bowling was introduced to Toronto in 1905, it became a lunch-time recreation for many people. To speed up the game, they frequently had only five pins set up. Thomas F. Ryan, owner of the Temperance Street Bowling Club, in 1909 was inspired to create a new sport based on that idea. He had five pins whittled down and he set up a system in which each pin was assigned a number of points from 1 to 5. Five-pin bowling caught on quickly. The first league was formed in Toronto in 1910. Two years later, a rubber band circling the throat of the pins was added to increase the amount of action. The first women's league was established in Toronto in 1921 and two years later the sport was introduced to Western Canada. That resulted in the founding of the Canadian Bowling Association, based in Toronto, 1927. However, bowlers in Western Canada adopted their own scoring system in 1930. Ryan's original system had assigned the values 4, 2, 1, 3, and 5 to the 1 through 5 pins respectively. The Western system used the values 1, 4, 5, 3, and 2. In 1944, the Western Canadian Five-Pin Bowling Assocation was founded in Regina, Saskatchewan. The two areas of the country continued with their own scoring systems until 1952, when a new national system was established, assigning the values 2, 3, 5, 3 and 2 to the five pins.
