The History
"The plaintive notes of a copper born, followed by the joyous music of a pack of hounds in full cry across frost-filled fields,
have echoed over Columbia County hillsides for years in the time-honored sport of foxhunting".
Smith of Canaan, established the Lebanon Valley Hunt. Captain Smith, a former U.S. Army Cavalry officer, had gained
hunting experience abroad. When he approached W.Gordon Cox of New Lebanon on the subject, Cox asked, "Is that the kind of foxhunting where people dress up in scarlet coats and ride over the ountryside"? "Yes," Smith replied, "it was indeed the same sport." Gordon Cox not only became a hunt member, he also became a founding member of The Old Chatham Hunt. In the summer of 1927, Smith and Cox organized paper chases (pieces of paper laid down as a course to follow) which proved popular In 1928, five couple of hounds were drafted from the Goldens

Article for The Scotsman on foxhunting, 27 July 1999
Author: Michael Portillo
The answer is that Mr Blair committed his party to abolition on Question Time. Far be it from me as a "wholly out-of-touch-Tory" to question the judgement of a Prime Minister who must have tested the proposition with many focus groups, but I suspect he’s made a miscalculation. If the policy announcement was designed to win Eddisbury, it failed. There was also some hubris in his visit to the constituency, as though the very magnanimity of his fleeting appearance in Cheshire were expected to clinch victory.
Opinion polls on foxhunting may not be wholly reliable. It’s clearly a minority interest, and is widely opposed. But some people probably respond to pollsters according to what they think is politically correct. The violence of the hunt saboteurs may even have intimidated some into giving what seems a "safe" answer. In any case, the argument has some distance to run yet, even if the Scottish parliament is able to move faster on abolition than that at Westminster.
Crucially, Labour has crossed an important line in wishing to convert disapproving opinion into legislation. Its much-vaunted defence of minorities applies only to groups of which it approves. Labour believes that even if a majority in this country disapproves of gay sex at age 16, legislation must provide freedom for homosexuals. Many Conservatives agree. On the issue of abortion, many Labour and Tory politicians believe women should be free to choose. But when it comes to foxhunting, Labour will end the freedom of the minority to placate the sensitivities of a supposed majority.

Fox hunting is an activity involving the tracking, chase, and sometimes killing of a fox, traditionally a red fox , by trained foxhounds or other scent hounds , and a group of followers led by a master of foxhounds, who follow the hounds on foot or on horseback. Fox hunting originated in its current form in the United Kingdom in the 16th century, but is practised all over the world, including Australia Canada France Ireland ... Russia , and the United States In Australia, the term also refers to the hunting of foxes with firearms similar to spotlighting or deer hunting The sport is controversial, particularly in the UK, where bans were introduced for Scotland in 2002, then for England and Wales in November 2004. Fox hunting
Updated 21 March 2002, 19.07
Fox hunting is back in the news. The sprt is banned in Scotland and could soon be changed forever in England and Wales. But what do you think? Is it a cruel sport? Or just the best way of controlling countryside pests? Unfortunately this topic is now closed but there are Comments pages on other subjects on the main Chat index. Why should townies get a say in this when they have never even been on a fox hunt let alone seen a fox! Laura, 12, Southampton Fox hunting is sick and twisted! My friends and I sent a petition round our school and neighbourhoods and everyone signed, we got 2,300 names! Laura, 12, Southampton Fox hunting isn't cruel. Adrenalin pumping round the foxes turns the animal's nerves off so they feel no pain and if the fox is caught it is killed instantly. Foxes are predators, if they are hungry they will have no qualms about eating your pet rabbit or guinea pig. If the fox numbers aren't controlled, disease will spread through them all. Gassing is very cruel in comparison, shooting is not guaranteed to kill the fox and poison can affect a wide range of animals. Rachel, 12, Dorset

To explain how the hunting of the fox is conducted, it is necessary to describe the role of the persons involved in the days 'sport'. Much of this description also applies to other forms of hunting. The Hounds - The foxhound was originally bred to hunt deer and hares and despite years of intensive breeding they will still 'riot' after these quarries. The foxhound stands normally between 22 - 25 inches at the shoulder. The hounds are not bred for speed but for their stamina and scenting ability, so although the fox runs much faster than the hounds, the hounds superior stamina will eventually enable it to kill its quarry. A much faster hound could be bred by crossing it with a racing type dog, but this would not be considered 'sporting' and, after all, those who ride behind would not be to pleased if every fox was killed after only a minutes gallop!

Transformation of Fox Hunting in Mississippi
by Wiley Charles Prewitt, Jr.
Game and hounds are the invention of gods, of Apollo and Artemis. They bestowed it on Chevron and honored him therewith for his righteousness. And he, receiving it, rejoiced in the gift, and used it. Xenophon, On Hunting. For many people, fox hunting conjures up images of red clad gentry riding to hounds, yet most Mississippi fox hunting was part of an informal rural tradition in which local hunters gathered at a good geographical vantage point to simply listen to their hounds run a fox. In south Mississippi a group of fox hunters cling to their avocation despite reversals in wildlife populations, altered interpretations of property rights and changing rural lifeways. This article traces traditional fox hunting in Mississippi from its origin as a communal rural past-time pursued in the open countryside and describes how its devotees adapted it to large fenced areas known as fox pens. Interviews with the participants allow the hunters themselves to describe the forces that influenced fox hunting and their reactions to them. The interviews offer insight into the changing natural and cultural environment of the state and suggest reasons for the resiliency of fox hunting as a rural activity. Dave Hellums, Copiah County, MS, 1994. Photograph by Wiley Prewitt.

Highlights show where fox hunting happens
Fox hunting is often viewed as a typically traditional British activity - but hunting with hounds takes place all over the world. Historically, wherever the British have gone building empires, they have taken the fox hunt, or a close approximation of the field sport, with them. In many countries, including the USA, Canada and India, hunting is a living reminder of the days of the old empire. But that is not to say, of course, that fox hunting is a British innovation. Plenty of other European countries have their own long tradition of hunting foxes with hounds. France, Italy and Ireland, for example, have thriving fox hunts. In many regions of France, deer, hares, and wild boar are all hunted with hounds. The hunting lobby has significant political presence, both in the European and regional parliaments in the form of the party Chasse, Peche, Nature, Traditions (Hunting, Fishing, Nature, Traditions).

Blood Sport or Just Plain Bloody Awful?
Riding to Hounds originated in England in the late of the 17th century as a method of controlling the fox population which endangered poultry farmers. By the early 19th century the sport, consisting of finding a fox and hunting it on horseback using a pack of hounds trained to follow its scent, had evolved into a ritual for the British gentry with a season of its own running from the first Monday in November until the following April. While the season is short, the hunt culture is a rich one full of ceremony and tradition and it has become for some, both in England and in parts of America, a way of life. In Europe, fox-hunting has met with increasing opposition from animal-rights activists and in Britain groups like the Hunt Saboteurs make it a practice to disrupt the goings on. Such is not yet the case in Pennsylvania where the hunt has a rhythm of its own, and the people who follow it have in some cases been bred to it just like the hounds and horses that make up the sights, sounds and texture of the sport.
