Origins
Though it has existed for centuries, it was formally arranged into an organised playing code by the Gaelic Athletic Association in the late nineteenth century. Male and female leagues of the game exist.
Rules
Gaelic football's rules are most similar to Australian Rules Football , and it is widely believed that Irish games were a significant influence on the Australian game. Since the late 20th century , Gaelic and Australian rules teams have played each other in International Rules matches, in which compromise rules based on both games are used. Modern Gaelic football is played with a round leather ball, similar to - but heavier than - that used in soccer The game is played on a ground similar to a rugby pitch. The goals, located at each end have a scoring system involving posts that are shaped like a letter 'H'. General description
At first glance Gaelic Football resembles a combination of soccer and rugby and/or Australian rules football . Players advance the ball up the field with a combination of carrying, kicking, and hand-passing to their team-mates. Some plays include a ducking and weaving movement where the player in possession will run toward an opponent and, at the last minute, change direction after wrong-footing the defender. Passing takes place to players on the run, so rather than passing directly to a team-mate, players will pass the ball into mid-air just ahead of the receiving player so that he can run into it. The scoring system adds another dimension to the game. If a team has a two-point deficit in the dying minutes of a match, they will start to try to get in closer to the goal and create a goal-scoring opportunity. Fans enjoy the high speed and frequent scoring, the many different ways to deliver the ball, and the unpredictable nature of the game.

Gaelic Football - "the all-round game" of hand, foot and round ball skills - has been played across Australia and NZ for many decades by Irish immigrants, visa workers and backpackers keen to play the national sport of their youth. In Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Auckland the ancient game of Hurling also is played. These days Gaelic football is played by women, men, boys and girls of all backgrounds across all States of Australia (Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart) and Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in New Zealand. Primarily this reflects the enthusiasm of Aussies and Kiwis finding the excitement and joy of the world's best all-round game. It also has recently commenced in Hobart, Tasmania in both men’s and women’s codes. Gaelic football is the most popular sport of Ireland in both participation and spectator numbers. It is the other parent game along with Aussie Rules to the International Rules competition played between Ireland and the Australian Football League.

The History of the GAA and Gaelic Football
Gaelic Football is best described as a mixture of soccer and rugby, though it predates both of these. It is a field game which is also similar to Australian Rules Football. It is believed that Australian Rules Football evolved from Gaelic Football through the thousands of Irish people who were either deported or have emigrated to Australia since the middle of the nineteenth century. The origins of Gaelic football predate recorded history, while the Gaelic Athletic Association(GAA) was set up in 1884 by a nationalist Michael Cusack. Today one of the main stands at Croke Park in Dublin is named after him. The GAA was set up to not only promote gaelic games(football, hurling, handball, camogie and rounders), but also to promote the Irish language, music and dance. Today it is the largest sporting association in Ireland

Then try to watch the spectacular Gaelic games Hurling and Gaelic Football which set their highlights just when football (soccer) takes its time out: in the European summer. Although the two sports are also played in clubs, the highlight is the yearly All Ireland Championships for the 33 county selections.
Ireland is divided in 4 provinces Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster (which is Northern Ireland). Those are divided again into an unequal number of counties (Connacht 6, Leinster 12 (incl. Dublin), Munster 6, Ulster 9).
First the provinces determine their champions, then those play off the All Ireland Championship.
Those county rivalries are also a journey into the past for football fans, as passion more than money characterizes the games. Both sports are said to be very old, the championships in today's form more than 100 years.
