The Summer Alternative from Ireland:
Gaelic Games: Hurling and Gaelic Football
gaelic football hurling links Have you ever wondered how football (soccer) would look like without offside?
Then try to watch the spectacular Gaelic games Hurling and Gaelic Football which set their highlights just when football (soccer) takes its time out: in the European summer. Although the two sports are also played in clubs, the highlight is the yearly All Ireland Championships for the 33 county selections.
Ireland is divided in 4 provinces Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster (which is Northern Ireland). Those are divided again into an unequal number of counties (Connacht 6, Leinster 12 (incl. Dublin), Munster 6, Ulster 9).
First the provinces determine their champions, then those play off the All Ireland Championship.
Those county rivalries are also a journey into the past for football fans, as passion more than money characterizes the games. Both sports are said to be very old, the championships in today's form more than 100 years.

  • Home News Regional Clubs Championships Gaelic Football in Queensland began in the late 1960’s as a casual kick-around social game among young Irishmen here on working visas. In 1975 the Queensland GAA was formed, and soon thereafter, affiliated with the national body. It wasn’t until the early 1980’s that saw the growth of Gaelic Games in Queensland, with the introduction of a 4 team men’s competition. The expansion of this competition and the introduction of women’s football in 1997 have seen Gaelic Football flourish in Brisbane, with it becoming a competitive, yet social sport, popular among Australian born participants. At present, the QGFA runs a 6 team Men’s and Women’s winter competition from March to September and a social summer competition during the off-season months. All games are held at Gaelic Park (situated in the Brisbane suburb of Willawong), which boasts 3 playing fields and a vibrant clubhouse.
All Clubs train at a variety of locations throughout Brisbane and welcome all old and new players to join and play Gaelic Football in a competitive and friendly sprit.

Gaelic Football league comes to St. Brendan's
June 26, 2008 By Katherine McInerney
Special to the Reporter
New games are in town this summer as the St. Brendan's Gaelic Athletic Club kicks off its opening season, bringing Gaelic football and hurling to Dorchester's fields. "All are welcome," said Larry McGann, hurling coach and secretary of the St. Brendan's club. "These are two of the most popular sports around the world that American kids have yet to play." With their deep Irish roots, Gaelic football and hurling in the United States have been played mostly within Irish communities, but McGann and Frank Hogan, the chairman of the club, hope to change all that. They want to instill in the mindset of parents that these sports are an option for kids of all creeds - and are confident that St. Brendan's in Dorchester will be able to cross all lines of race, class, religion and gender. "Kids don't know the difference between one game and another," McGann said. They don't pick up on the historical, religious, or ethnic associations that many people attribute to certain sports. "All they know is it's fun," McGann added. "You can teach any kid from anywhere how to play the game."

Gaelic Football
The most widely played sport in Ireland is Gaelic Football, which along with Hurling is organised by the Gaelic Athletics Association and is the national sport of Ireland.
Over the years football has been dominated by County Kerry . Known as the Kingdom, Kerry has been crowned Kings of Football more times than any other county and are followed by fierce rivals Dublin . In recent years Ulster teams such as Armagh and Tyrone have risen to prominence. Kerry have been in the All Ireland Final a staggering 51 times and have won 33 titles, Dublin have won 22 times.
Each parish in Ireland has a Gaelic Football club and the game is played by over two thirds of Irishmen. With games played all over the country and virtually each week of the year, you could find a game to watch as part of your Irish experience while vacationing in Ireland. If you would like more information about Ireland , our self-drive Irish vacations escorted coach tours or activity vacations please contact one of our Ireland based Guides who can provide you with a free quote.
