Goalball has evolved into a global sport with it’s own world championships and is played at the Paralympics. Featuring both men’s and women’s teams, Goalball is an excellent form of exercise for individuals of varying degrees of visual impairment. Goalball is played on a gym floor, occupying a playing surface roughly the size of a volleyball court. Tape is placed on the floor in a set pattern to help the participants orientate themselves. There are three players per team on the court… a centre, right winger and a left winger. The net in a Goalball game is the entire width of the court… nine meters. The object of the game is to roll the Goalball past the players on the other team. If a team is successful in rolling the ball past the other team and into the net, a goal is scored. Teams try to score as many goals as possible over two, ten minute halves. The team scoring the most goals is the winner. Another unique aspect of Goalball is the fact that no spectators can make any noise while the game is in progress. This is due to the participants requiring silence to hear the bells in the ball. Once a goal is scored, fans can cheer as in any other game. Coaches must also be quiet during play. They can only pass on instructions during a time out, or at half time when teams change ends.

The Power of Goalball By Sue Wiygul Martin The onset of a disability in adulthood often brings with it the loss of more than just the affected ability. With the onset of my blindness in 1982, I immediately put several activities on my list of activities in which I could no longer participate. One such group of activities were those related to recreation, and especially competitive sports. Before the onset of my blindness I enjoyed riding, canoeing, and swimming, both competitively and recreationally. But how could I do these sports now? I dismissed them from my mind. I felt the void though. Not only was I not getting the exercise to which I was accustomed, but also I was missing the socialization that accompanied participation in these various recreational activities. I sorely missed the camaraderie at the stable and the horseplay at the takeout at the end of a canoeing trip. "Well, it's just too bad," I thought. "I can't do that anymore." At the insistence of friends, family, and my own inner prompting, I tried swimming again. I learned that once I got in the pool, I was fine. I could swim to my heart's content, contacting the lane rope every few strokes to make sure I kept straight. This restored a much-needed physical activity. I felt my body begin to shape up as I swam regularly.

The Sheffield Goalball Group is a bunch of visually impaired people who, for reasons best known to themselves, enjoy throwing themselves on the floor and throwing a large hard ball at each other whilst blindfolded. Strangely enough, we think this is a fun way to spend our time. We also participate in various tournaments around the UK. We train on Monday evenings from 6-7pm at the Blind Institute on Mappin Street in Sheffield. For more information about training, email sheffield.scorpions@bigfoot.com What is Goalball? Goalball was originally developed in 1946 by Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and German Sepp Reindle, in an effort to help rehabilitate blinded war veterans. It has been an event at the Paralympics since 1976. Goalball is played on an indoor court measuring 18 x 9 metres. A team consists of 3 players, all of whom must wear blindfolds (usually blacked out ski masks), so that noone has any sight advantage. The object of the game is to roll the ball past the other team into their goal. In order to defend the goal, the players must dive onto the floor and lie stretched out in order to block the ball with their bodies. The ball has bells inside it so that you can hear it coming, and the court has tactile markings so you know where you are (string taped onto the floor). The game can soon become fast and furious, with balls reaching speeds of up to 50 mph., so the game requires fast reactions, courage, and intense concentration.
