The competition consisted of men's and women's team events, and what had been billed as one of the most open tournaments certainly lived up to expectations. In the women's gold medal game, the lead changed hands five times, with the USA outlasting China by a score of 6-5, with never more than one goal in it. The winning goal came from Asya Miller with less than a minute to go. The gold medal in the men's game was even more dramatic. Lithuania, the current world champions, took advantage of a clutch of penalties in the first half to jump ahead of China by 6 goals to 2 at the half, and looked to be holding on despite a steady comeback. With only 50 seconds on the clock, the Chinese were two goals behind (6-8) but managed to overturn the deficit with three goals in 30 seconds to take the gold 9-8, sending the packed BIT Gymnasium into rapture. Goalball is a highly competitive sport played three-against-three, indoors on a gym floorprimarily by blind and visually impaired athletes. It's played from the local school-gym level on up to the Paralympic, 'Team USA' level Internationally. Games are usually quite competitive and exciting to watcheven on a local level. There are two teams playing against eachother, with one on each end of the 60x40 foot court. All players are blindfolded to make the game fair. This is due to varying levels of sight among players. Some are legally-blind, some are totally blind. The blindfolds ensure equality among players. The object is to roll a three-pound Goalball, which is sort of like a heavy basketball, past the opposing team without them stopping it. It's their job to block that ball at all costs. Now you may be asking yourself, "how do the players keep track of the ball if they're blind?" The ball has bells in itsounding a lot like Christmas "jingle bells"that allow the players to listen for it. When they hear the ball coming towards their end of the court, they dive, usually head-first, towards it hoping to block it with their body and stop it. They often slide back and forth on the floor, using their bodies to block the oncoming ball. If all three players miss the ball and it goes past them or over them and then over the back line, it is considered a goal. The team with the most goals at the end of two 10-minute halves, wins the game. There are usually several games in a typical tournament.

GOALBALL Trent Farebrother Goalball is a fast-paced Paralympic sport developed uniquely for blind and visually impaired athletes. There are three positions on the court during play - a centre and two wingers - who are positioned in front of a goal measuring 9 meters (approximately 30 feet) in width. Players wear goggles that are blacked out to eliminate any light, allowing athletes with all degrees of visual acuity to play equally. Players rely on their sense of hearing and touch to track the ball on the court (similar to volleyball) and contain bells. The object is to roll the ball past the defending team, who attempt to block the ball before it enters the goal. Competitive opportunities may include: Tournaments, Canadian Championships, World Championships, and Paralympic Games. Goalball teams consist of 6 members, with only 3 playing at a time. There are three positions: center, right wing, and left wing. Some players can play multiple positions effectively. Teams often switch positions during play to confuse the opposition. The game is played on a court measuring 9 X 18 m (same size as volleyball), with goals at either end spanning the entire 9 meter back-line. All players must wear opaque eyeshades at all times so everyone is on an even playing field, and cannot see anything regardless of their degree of visual impairment. At the National and Paralympic levels shots can exceed 60 km/h, considering the court is only 18 meters long, the defense does not have much time to react. Top-tier Goalball players can also throw curve shots, bouncing shots, and spin shots so even if the defense gets into position for where they think the ball will be, often it goes around or over the defender and into the net. Games consist of two 10 minute halves with a 3 minute break at half time. Whoever scores the most goals wins, if there is a tie it will go on to sudden-death overtime, followed by penalty shots.

Down go the players on the first team, but the ball whizzes by and scores a point. Torball is a ball game, developed in the 1970's for blind and visually impaired people. Torball is an intensive team sport for blind and visually handycapped persons. The game suits men and women of all ages. There are lots of facilities in this game for rehabilitation activities as well as leisure, school and top level sport. Torball is played on a rectangular court of 16 m in length and 7 m in width. On the court are six players from two teams, i.e. three players per team. A goal is erected at either end of the rectangular court. The game is played with a bell ball, wich must be thrown underneath three cords tightened across the court. The object of the game is for each team to throw the ball across the opponent´s goal line while the other team attemps to prevent this from happening. Then, the former defending team takes on the attacking play and former attackers in turn defend their goal. A particularity of the game is the ball, wich weights only 500 grams and is pumped up with air. Its qualities allow to play very tricky and fast. Torball demands for the ability of concentration and reaction by the players. Torball has got what it takes to spread even further and become a paralympic sport. Torball is a speedy and dynamic game. It is enormously popular specially in countries in Central Europe and in Latin America. Thus it is also played on the other Continents, Asia, African and Oceania. Torball is presumedly played in about 30 countries by almost 1'200 persons.
