From personal experience, I can say the EGO tournaments are top-of-the-line events, well managed by James Clingerman, who uses his knowledge as a Black Belt and business man to provide an overall satisfying experience to every competitor. The tournaments are on-time, have great atmosphere, and offer opportunities for competition ranging from kids to seniors, beginners to Black Belts, including pro divisions. These assets make the EGO events some of the best tournaments in the U.S., a must for any mid-west (and beyond) practitioner looking for some serious competition. Thanks James, A.J. and the rest of the crew for this great work in the dissemination and development of our sport.

The art of Grappling has a reported history of over 4,000 years. It was a popular form of martial art in China, India, Greece and Rome in the old ages. Egyptian paintings and sculptures show that wrestling was popular during the period of New Kingdom (2000 to 1085 BC). There were around 406 wrestling pairs found in the tombs of the Middle Kingdom and at Beni Hasan in the Nile Valley. In ground fighting were imployed joint-locks and chokehold. The Ancient Greek rules of winning by submission or pin (Katazletikè) are the same as those of Catch Wrestling , which is another style of submission wrestling, originated from the Lancashire style during the late 18th. In Brazil was born two famous style focuses in ground fighting.

    World Wrestling Games in Astana
The 5th edition of the FILA World Wrestling Games will take place in Astana (KAZ) on 22-23 October 2010. The competition will be organized in conjunction with the 3rd World Kazakh Kures Championship and placed under the patronage of the President of the Repulic, Mr. Noursoultan NazarbaĂŻev, and the Ministry of Sport. The World Wrestling Games will be held in the brand new National Tennis Center and will bring together competitions of Grappling (Gi and No-Gi), Pankration, Belt Wrestling Alysh, Ukrainian Wrestling, as well as demonstrations of traditional wrestling from Tajikistan, Iran, Yakut Wrestling Khapsagai, and Khanti-Mansi. After having affiliated Kazakhstan and Mongolia as national grappling and pankration representatives earlier this year, FILA hopes that the World Wrestling Games will help spread its disciplines in Central Asia, a region with deep fighting traditions. The Kazakhstan Pankration Federation could already demonstrate its atheltes' great level on the occasion of the World Championship in Cracow (with two bronze medals in 60kg and 90kg) and during the SportAccord Combat Games (with a bronze medal in 70kg). FILA is looking forward to welcoming athletes from all over the world to the ultra-modern capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan!
    2010 European Championship in Gorlice
The European Championship in Grappling, Pankration, and Combat Grappling was successfully organized by the Polish Wrestling Federation and the Polish Grappling Committee from 24 till 26 September 2010. The event was brought to the lovely town of Gorlice, in the South East of Poland, and was cheered up by several cultural events to present the region's traditions and heritage. The team leaders were for example invited to a classical concert given by the world-class pianist and native of Gorlcie, Mrs. Mariola Cieniawa, to celebrate the bicentennial of Fryderyk Chopin's birth. The President of the organizing committee, Mr. Grzegorz Brudzinski, put a lot of heart into making the participants enjoy their stay and discover his hometown. He notably arranged a craft fair with several artisans showing their ancestral knowledge and selling hand-made souvenirs and a very appreciated closing banquet with barbecue and drinks.

    GRAPPLING
    GROUND FIGHTING
Only in recent times has it become an accepted fact that street fights can be won against other experienced fighters with the use of grappling skills. In all-out fights conducted in the ring, fine boxers and karate exponents have been bested by the wrestling and ju jitsu skills of grappling. Most martial artists agree that they have seldom seen a kick actually decide a fight. This is not to say that grappling arts are superior to other fighting arts in the street, although they are definitely stronger in the street than earlier thought, partly due to the fact that exponents of most martial arts know no offensive or defensive skills whatsoever in a grappling situation.. It probably does prove however, that in those fights which were won with grappling techniques, the winning fighter representing grappling techniques was superior on that day to others entered in that competition . Since a knockout is actually difficult to achieve, the grappler closes in and takes his opponent to the ground or even drags his opponent with him as he falls to his back. At that point, immobilization, choking, arm bars, hitting, kicking, and other techniques cause a submission. Some fighters claim that more than 90% of the street fights involving only two people wind up clinching and grappling. Some will say that 90% of all fights where the fighters are untrained go to the ground. Sometimes one fighter is being handily beaten and grabs the other to avoid further punishment, or if one or both fighters are unskilled, the natural tendency is to grab, hold, and wrestle. Therefore, if your opponent falls or is thrown to the ground, you must feel confident to move in immediately. Of course you or your attacker might purposely take the fight to the ground.

This includes maneuvers to obtain a strong position (for example guard or mount), takedowns, various pins, joint locks, and pain locks. In the forms seen today it normally excludes techniques such as biting and pinching. In submission grappling there are no strikes.
Grappling may be engaged in either standing or on the ground , although many standing techniques are takedowns, and thus used for forcing the opponent to an unfavorable position on the ground.

    Grappling
Grappling is a combination of wrestling techniques and submissions derived from the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Also known as "submission wrestling," or "No Gi Jiu Jitsu," Grappling has gained popularity in recent years due to its effectiveness in mixed martial arts. The benefits of grappling are extensive. Besides being a very effective discipline in MMA and self-defense, grappling is a great way to improve functional strength, flexibility, cardiovascular conditioning, body composition and core strength. With world-class instruction, our program accommodates men and women of all skill levels. Our unsurpassed program is taught by two of the best coaches and competitors in the sport. Grappling
Grappling is a non-striking hybrid sport formed of wrestling, jiu jitsu, sambo, and many other submission fighting styles which consists in applying submission holds and choking techniques in order to make the opponent abandon the fight. Grappling plays an important role in the practice of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and is considered an effective form of self-defense.
When including grappling into its field of activities, FILA had the vision to unite the grappling community under standard international rules and offer a generic discipline that would go beyond the specificities of each submission fighting discipline. Straight forward and easy to understand rules were thus created to facilitate the participation of athletes coming from different fighting backgrounds in international competitions.
Since submission fighting is traditionally practiced with and without kimono (Gi), FILA has decided to implement both trends in order to cover the full spectrum of techniques associated to each particular style. If some athletes prefer one style over the other, most of them enjoy practicing and competing in both. Therefore, the FILA tournaments generally take place in Gi and No-Gi divisions to enable all submission fighters to compete to their highest ability no matter what their fighting background might be. In order to unify the rules and participation in Grappling, Pankration, and Combat Grappling competitions, FILA has adopted common weight categories for all three styles. The lighter categories have a smaller increase in weight due to the the bigger effect weight differences have on lighter athletes' performances. An absolute category open to competitors of all weight classes has also been added to allow heavier athletes to compete and to demonstrate that grappling techniques can sometimes overcome weight and strength, creating an exciting and spectator-friendly addition to the sport.
