The Olympic games were eventually adopted and reborn throughout the world alternating the competition in a new country every 4 years, however, Pankration competition was not included. It is only because of the sparse historical records and the special interests of a few individuals that Pankration is having a rebirth in this generation.
Modern Day Pankration
The current wave of "no holds barred" and pay per view fighting events has brought with it a curiosity and interest to it's ancient predecessor Pankration. Just as the boxing venue grew and evolved from ancient Greece to Madison square garden and the rest of the world, the skills, techniques, training methods, rules, attire and safety measures have also evolved. For the most part this evolution has been beneficial to the sport and it's participants. Now after centuries ancient Greek Pankration is getting the opportunity to become Modern Pankrationin the same way as it's brother boxing did.

Ancient Greek Pankration: the Origins of MMA, Part One
By Jad Semaan (Senior Analyst) on June 9, 2008 reads comments likes Inspired by my colleague Derek Bolender and his article on MMA for newcomers( http://bleacherreport.com/articles/27230-MMA-Get-to-Know-the-Fastest-Growing-Sport-in-America-040608 ), I felt that a more in-depth look at the history of MMA would be appreciated by all fans, both novice and veteran followers of the sport alike. Such a history I hope will enable us to examine the foundations of our sport so we can better understand its current shape and structure, both as an athletic competition and as a legitimate enterprise rapidly gaining popularity among mainstream audiences. This first article in a proposed four-part series will chronicle the appearance of ancient Greek Pankration as the original incarnation of MMA. The second article will discuss the gladiatorial games of the Romans and their influence on the perception and organization of current MMA events. th century as the precursor to modern MMA combat.

Nothing New Under the Sun: Mixed Martial Arts Bears Striking Resemblance to Ancient Greek Pankration
A lot can change in 2,650 years. Apparently, though, when it comes to sports, everything old is new again. At least when it comes to the sport that boasts the fastest-growing popularity in the U.S. today: Mixed Martial Arts. But whether you call it Mixed Martial Arts or Ultimate Fighting, this sport is far from modern. Combining Greco-Roman wrestling with a variety of martial arts techniques, the sport closely resembles the free-form a ncient Greek competitive sport of pankration. With individual matches often lasting hours (and sometimes resulting in the death of one or both combatants), the game quickly became the most popular Olympic sport. Its popularity declined at the time of the rise of the Roman Empire, when other combat sports began taking precedence. In the modern Western World, boxing and wrestling grew in popularity while in the East, traditional martial arts flourished. From 1935 to 1951, 135-pound Helio Gracie fought and defeated in excess of 1,000 competitors in this unarmed combat form; many of his opponents outweighed him by more than 100 pounds.

A FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS OF ANCIENT GREEK PANKRATION
by: Kostas Dervenis
Replication and/or publication of same in electronic or printed format is strictly forbidden without the written consent of the author.
Sport pankration was an attempt to institute competition in the martial arts at the Olympiad. The historic controversy around it was a result of the problems that are always created when one tries to turn a martial art into a combat sport.
Inside Kung Fu - April 1996
Pankration is an archaic Greek word that means "total strength" and refers to a combat sport of the ancient Olympiad which was essentially an all-out fight between two contestants. Pankration allowed bare-knuckle boxing, kicking, wrestling, jointlocks, throws, and strangleholds, prohibiting only two tactics: biting and gouging out the opponent's eyes.
In the past ten years there has been renewed interest in and considerable literary effort dedicated to pankration. In addition, quite a few modern martial artists of Greek descent have pictures themselves as the regenerators of the sport, creating modern synthesis systems which are usually a combination of kickboxing, sport judo, and sport wrestling. This article will attempt to analyze both the kinesiology and technique of the ancient Greek martial art, and show that it was quite different from modern derivations, having more in common with medieval Japanese martial forms.
Moreover, even the use of the word pankration to describe the ancient Greek martial art is erroneous, since pankration was a combat sport, based on martial technique, but with a sport's limitations. However, lacking any other name to describe this archaic system of unarmed combat, the author, too, will use the term pankration in this article, with reservations and with explanations wherever possible.
