The information provided here is for those who are interested in learning more about the sport of Greyhound racing. While there are those who believe that the sport is what Greyhounds were born to do, others believe that it should be banned entirely. Within this section, you will find links to various organizations, both for and against. It is not intended to form an opinion of the sport but rather to help educate.
Background Information:
In Canada: Lure Coursing section of the Canada's Guide to Dgos website. While the sport of Greyhound racing is not legislated in Canada, there are rules in place to protect the welfare of the dogs and all events are run according to the organizations rules. At this time, there is one Greyhound racing track in Alberta: The Calida Greyhound Racing Track . See the article Greyhound Racing in Canada? written by the Northwest Canadian Greyhound League for more information on the legality of Greyhound Racing in this country. In the United States: In the United States however, there are approximately 1,500 breeding farms in 43 states that produce the dogs that have made Greyhound racing a very popular spectator sport. There are 46 racing tracks in 15 states with the state of Florida having the highest number of tracks at 14. In the early days of Greyhound racing, farmers used the natural speed and hunting instinct of the Greyhound to control jackrabbits that threatened their crops. During the 1800's, informal races between dogs became popular and, in 1919, the first circular track opened in Emeryville, California.

    Greyhound Racing
In the United States, betters wager billions of dollars on dog races every year. Only four states, California, Maine, Vermont, and Virginia, have banned greyhound racing. These state laws prohibiting racing are largely ineffectual, because federal law does not prohibit the interstate shipment of greyhounds used in racing. One state may ban the breeding of dogs used for racing, but dog handlers in another state can breed the same dogs and ship them across state lines. The greyhound racing industry breeds approximately 50,000 puppies each year. Of these animals, only 15,000 actually become racing dogs. The rest are "retired," used as breeding stock, or, in a more likely scenario, shot and destroyed. The racing industry also sells thousands of dogs considered unfit for racing to laboratories, which experiment on animals. Thus, greyhound racing functions not only as a "sport" and gambling enterprise, but as a breeding facility for cruel vivisection practices. Dogs that become racing animals do not live less cruel lives. Several thousand rabbits and other small animals die yearly during the training of greyhounds. Trainers use these small animals as live bait, exhorting greyhounds to chase the animals around a track in order to simulate race conditions. Trainers allow dogs to catch and destroy those bait animals that are no longer able to run effectively.

    Greyhound Racing Tracks
Greyhound racing tracks are the tracks where greyhounds race as a sport. The greyhounds chase a lure (a mechanical hare or rabbit) around the track until they arrive at the finish line. In many countries, greyhound racing is purely amateur and conducted for enjoyment. In other countries, particularly the UK, US, Ireland and Australia, greyhound racing is a popular form of sport, similar to horse racing. Greyhound racing tracks are usually oval shaped, though are quite a number of circular and straight tracks. Grass used to be the preferred surface for greyhound tracks as greyhounds used to chase rabbits in grasslands. Furthermore, grass tracks looked good and provided fast races. On the other hand, it was too difficult and expensive to maintain, especially during the winter. Loam and cinder track surfaces were also popular in the past. Today, sand, or a mixture of sand and clay, is the surface of choice for many greyhound racing tracks. Kennels in greyhound racing tracks are usually made up of indoor crates stacked two levels (tiers) high, with the females usually kept on the upper level, and males on the lower level. While the space allocated to each dog varies between locations, typical crate size is 3-1/2 feet wide by 4 feet (1.2 m) deep by 3 feet (0.91 m) high. Modern tracks even provide air-conditioned kennels and Jacuzzi facilities for the greyhounds.

The WGRF is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Jan Wilson as President of the WGRF, effective January 01, 2007. The current Chairman of Greyhounds Australasia (GA) and Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), Jan will become the first woman to fill this prestigious position.
Mrs Wilson came to greyhound racing in the State of Victoria, Australia, after a long and successful career in politics and business administration. Appointed by the Victorian government to the Board of GRV in 1999, she became Chairman of that organization some six months later. In 2002, she was elected President of GA, the organization that represents the jurisdictional controlling authorities of all of the Australian States and Territories, as well as New Zealand.
Mrs Jan Wilson Born in Scotland, Mrs Wilson has lived in Australia for the past 40 years and has Australian citizenship. She attributes the success of GRV and GA to all of the various people who actively contribute to the industry. "We are only as successful as our people. We have employees, people who serve on committees of clubs and volunteers who complement the dedicated commitment of our breeders, trainers and owners" she said. "I think it is important to ensure that the industry is inclusive in its recognition of all stakeholders and know that as all participants are a vital part of the whole industry, they are all expected to fulfill their roles to the very best of their abilities".

Greyhound Racing Tracks in the UK
The greyhound arrived in Europe more than 3,500 years ago. In 1014, King Canute of England enacted the Forest Laws, which stated that only noblemen could own and hunt with greyhounds. In the 1500s, Queen Elizabeth I abolished this law and later initiated the first formal rules of greyhound coursing. Thus, greyhound racing became known as the "Sport of Queens." In the early 1900s, huge crowds would gather to watch greyhound coursing. In the interest of safety, enclosed courses were introduced. These enclosed courses were much smaller than the open courses and speed over agility was of utmost importance. It was just a matter of time before racing would take over from the well established coursing. On July 24, 1926, in front of 1,700 spectators, seven Greyhounds leapt out of the traps at Belle Vue Greyhound Track and raced to catch an electric hare. This marked the first ever modern greyhound race in England. Soon after, greyhound tracks sprung up all over the United Kingdom and greyhound racing was firmly established in the sporting scene. The following is a list of greyhound racing track in England.

      Greyhound Racing Terminology
      • Early Speed / Front Runners
There are two types of early speed dogs. One type shows a strong break out of the box - the break call is approximately four lengths from the starting box. The other type tends to break moderately and then rush or drive the first turn. Late Speed / Closers
Late speed dogs generally show a somewhat slow break out of the box. They come to the 8th call following the pack. From here on out is where the closers run their race. Some may show a gradual gain throughout the race, while others wait until late in the race to make their move. This type of a runner pushes hard in the stretch passing many of the dogs and should never be underestimated. Class
Determining the class of the race can be tough sometimes. This can depend on the stats you have available to you. Look first to find the one showing the most "in the money" finishes at the current grade racing. Next, look for grade drops and how competitive the dog was in the higher grade. Class tends to be a much stronger variable in higher-grade races. Time
This variable brings many arguments between handicappers. Some tend to place this factor at the top of the list, while others consider this lightly. Some observers have found a strong correlation with the dogs having the fastest times generally will also be the class of the race.
