Greyhound racing evolved from an old sport called coursing, in which a dog chased a live game animal. Learn the history of greyhound racing and read about the major North
http://www.greyhound-racing.info/
Greyhound Racing Scenes of what seem to be coursing have been found on Egyptian tombs. These scenes date back to 2500 BC and the dogs depicted looked very much like modern greyhounds. Greyhounds are brilliant hunting dogs because of their speed and vision. Greyhounds can run up to 45 miles an hour. But unlike most hunting dogs, greyhounds don't have an acute sense of smell. Instead of smelling a prey, greyhounds tend to chase moving objects, which they can spot from long distances. Coursing was originally a sport that exhibited a single greyhound's skill in sighting and catching a game animal. During the 16th century, coursing became a competitive sport, with two dogs matched against one another in a race for the game. The owners of the dogs usually had a sizeable bet on the result. At some coursing races, spectators also gathered and placed side bets on one dog or the other. The first official coursing meet was held in 1776 at Swaffham, Norfolk, England. The rules of the Swaffham Coursing Society specified that only two greyhounds were to course a single hare and that the hare was to be given a head start of 240 yards. Greyhound racing with an artificial lure was introduced at Hendon, England, on September 11, 1876. Six dogs raced over a 400-yard straight course, chasing an artificial hare riding on "an apparatus like a skate on wheels" along a single track, according to a newspaper account.

The work of the Greyhound Protection League is dedicated to the hundreds of thousands of gentle, trusting greyhounds killed in the prime of life during the 80 years of pari-mutuel dog racing in America. The primary purpose of this website is to bear witness to the tragic history of the racing greyhound so that the world will never again be lulled into silence, ignorance or indifference. The unbridled expansion of dog racing during the 20 th Century spawned a greyhound breeding frenzy that culminated in the death of tens of thousands of uncompetitive greyhounds every year. As expendable by-products of the racing system, the sacrifice of these young lives was considered acceptable in the interest of state-budget deficits, gambling profits and free market enterprise; but not to everyone . . . Founded in 1991, the Greyhound Protection League was the first organization of its kind to break the silence and speak out nationally against the atrocities inflicted upon racing greyhounds. GPL is a national, non-profit, all volunteer organization committed to protecting racing greyhounds from exploitation, mistreatment and abuse.

How to Fit a Racing Muzzle on a Greyhound Greyhounds wear racing muzzles made of durable plastic during a race for two reasons. http://www.starbreezes.com/11/greyhound.html

Greyhound racing is a cruel and needless practice. Profit and entertainment are the only purposes. And it is at a heavy price for the animals involved. Tens of thousands of Greyhounds are bred every year by the racing industry, far more than can be used for racing. A Greyhound’s racing career typically lasts 3.5 to 4 years. During this time, they live in cages, pens or other enclosures. Living conditions may or may not be climate controlled. Some live in cages as small as 3 feet by 3 feet for as long as 22 hours a day. They usually have very limited human contact. During their racing career, they are sometimes forced to race in extreme weather.
Depending on the track and the particular kennel at each track, the dogs may be used to human contact but completely deprived of affection. They are treated like machines. While they are fed, and allowed out, that is it. It leads to some greyhounds developing "kennel stare" and a detachment from humans in general. We strongly support the rescue of retired racers as the alternative is death. However, many of these dogs may be hard to place. They can be cat or small dog aggressive, to the point of killing. They are most of the time temprament tested by rescues but caution is still needed to see how they react. The greyhounds themselves are not the only animals abused by the racing industry. Up to 100,000 domestic rabbits and wild rabbits have been killed every year. One example is an event known as coursing which involves the dogs chasing and eventually killing rabbits within a fenced enclosure. The use of live lures is not permitted in 14 states, but the laws are difficult to enforce.

As greyhound races are fast and furious events - the distance can vary from 415 metres to 800 metres - a day at the greyhound race track is a truly action packed affair. Races start every ten to fifteen minutes, making a day of watching and betting on greyhound races an entertaining and breathtaking spectacle. A greyhound race is limited to six dogs. The greyhounds were colour-coded vests, which determine the trap from which they will start as well as making it easy to follow your selection in the flurry of the race. The colour code for the vests is very much standardised:
    • Trap 1 = Red vest with a white 1 Trap 2 = Blue vest with a white 2 Trap 3 = White vest with a black 3 Trap 4 = Black vest with a white 4 Trap 5 = Yellow vest with a black 5 Trap 6 = Black and white striped vest with a red 6
Greyhound racing has gone through phases of popularity but is currently one of the best-attended and most bet on racing sports in the world. To learn more about the history of greyhound racing and greyhound race betting , check out our dedicated pages on these topics.
