A Brief History HANDCYCLING is becoming one of the worlds fastest growing disability sport, the speed and adrenalin in this new sport is very addictive and its recent inclusion into the Paralympic program only highlights it’s popularity. Classifications of both paraplegic and tetraplegic compete in time trials and road races of differing distances using cycles propelled by arm cranks. Handcycling began in the 1980s as a recreational sport. Early equipment was hard to find, clunky, and expensive. The leap from “leg only” powered to “arm powered” was made by cyclists from within the ranks of the human powered vehicle movement. Ironically, the original handcycle was not intended for someone with a disability. Nonetheless, the development made it possible for individuals of all abilities to experience the joy of cycling. Today, handcycles reap the benefits of both the modern cycling industry and cutting-edge wheelchair technology, including light weight components, high pressure tires, wide-range gearing systems, hi-tech. seating systems, hydration systems, and ingenious steering systems for optimal handling. HANDCYCLING was approved as part of the   International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Cycling Program in 1998 and was included at the World Cycling Championships for the Disabled that same year. Since 2004, the IPC included a race for handcycles (men only) at the Paralympic Games in Athens Greece and now has included track and road events (men and women) in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

      How to get involved

HANDCYCLING UK RACING TRAINING RECREATION ... Membership Handcycling Association United Kingdom History The Handcycling Association UK (HCAUK) was formed by a group of enthusiastic handcyclists in 1999 that enjoyed the sport. Since then the sport has aligned itself with various organisations. The racers joined the BHPC Calendar of events around the country long before the association was formed and the BRITISH GRAND PRIX SERIES still includes races with the BHPC. Since 2004, the HCAUK has worked closely with the BRITISH CYCLING FEDERATION (BCF) in the development of the sport. The GP events also include BCF sanctioned road races and CYCLING TIME TRIALS (CTT) have allowed the racers into the RUDY PROJECT TT SERIES in 2005. In 2004 the HCAUK was accepted onto the European Handcycling Circuit (EHC) the mainstay and driving force in the world development of handcycling. On August 7th 2005, the HCAUK organised the first EHC International handcycle race on British soil, as part of CYCLEFEST 2005 at the Castle Combe Race Circuit. The future certainly looks bright...

About Handcy cling Handcycling is becoming a booming sport since the introduction of high performance handcycles like; Varna , Top End, Lightning, Freedom Rider and many other brands. Before high performance handcycles, wheelchair racing and b asketball, where the predominant way for a person in a wheelchair to get a good aerobic work out. A sport that although still in its infancy, handcycling, is quickly becoming the first choice for someone looking to satisfy their need for fitness and speed. Unlike wheelchair racing, where the lack of technique and experience will hinder the athletes performance, handcycling is much more accessible, easier to learn and a more enjoyable sport. With the newly formed U.S. Handcycling Federation the sport will not only grow but become more and m ore the most visible of all wheelchair sports. We at are really excited to be able to be part of such a great sport and set our goals in contributing to its growth and development.
