Hapkido is a Korean martial art, with a focus on self-defense. Utilizing locks, throws, strikes, kicks, and weapons training, Hapkido is an art taught to Korean Special Forces and the Korean Secret Service because it is incredibly effective for self-defense without regard to relative size or strength. A fluid, circular style, Hapkido re-directs an attacker's force, allowing you to control an attacker's motion. For some basic examples of Hapkido techniques, please take a look at the Hapkido Multimedia . We are certified under the U.S. Hapkido Association. Ages 15 and up. History
Hapkido history is rather confused, but Korean sources attribute it to two Koreans, Choi Yong Sul and Ji Han Jae. Primarily there are two main beliefs concerning Choi's education in the martial arts. Choi was sent to Japan at a young age. It is claimed that Choi worked as a houseboy for the Daito-ryu Aikijutsu master Takeda Sokaku ( Morihei Ueshiba , a famous student of Takeda, went on to found Aikido ) and studied Daitoryu. However, Takeda Sokaku's son Tokimune never knew such a Korean disciple. Some attribute this to the fact of prevailing racism against Koreans in Japan, but this is flatly contradicted by the fact that a number of Koreans were clearly registered by Sokaku, who kept meticulous record of such matter as he charged students for licensing of the art. So far, there is no evidence to show that Choi ever studied Daitoryu except the claim made by Choi himself. On his return to Korea, Choi began to teach martial arts. One of his students, Ji Han Jae, claims that he incorporated traditional Korean kicking and punching techniques (from

Hapkido
ABOUT HAPKIDO Hapkido means "the way of coordinated power". Hap literally translated means coordination or harmony, Ki is the essence of power and Do means the art or the way. It is the name that was given to the traditional Korean art of Yu-Sol, after its techniques were developed and refined by Choi Yong Shul in the 1930's. He added Aikido elements to Korean methods. All techniques are used for their practical self defense purposes. Since the style is predominately defensive, a practitioner generally allows an attacker to make the first move, thereby committing him or herself. originally a grappling and throwing art, it now includes a variety of strikes and kicks. Hapkido was introduced in the United States in the 1960's and it has grown in popularity Hapkido incorporates powerful and fluid kicking techniques; highly effective and flowing throwing techniques; and precise and sharp hand techniques. This concise and practical martial art is the result of a 1300 year pursuit of the Way Thirteen centuries ago, the land currently occupied by North and South Korea consisted of 3 kingdoms - Kokuryo, Paikche and Silla. The people of Kokuryo were known for their military and intellectual skills (head). The Silla were craftsmen (hands). The Paikche were agrarian (feet).

Hapkido
Hapkido is a Korean martial art which emerged in the mid-twentieth century and quickly grew to become an international style.
Its founders created the art by selectively fusing a wide range of existing martial skills, with new innovations. The basis for much of Hapkido’s technical material is thought to come from Daito Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu, a Japanese art, which was reinterpreted and integrated with a broad range of native Korean philosophical ideas and martial techniques. Hapkido’s founders also created many unique martial techniques, some of which have since been adopted by other martial arts. As a result, Hapkido possesses one of the most complex, unique, and varied arsenals of self-defense techniques to be found in any martial art. These techniques encompass all major martial categories including: strikes, kicks, blocks, avoiding movements, holds, joint locks, chokes, throws, breakfalls, tumbling, ground fighting, weapons, meditation, and healing. Like many Asian martial arts, Hapkido emphasizes the unification of body, mind, and spirit; the perfection of human character; social responsibility; and appropriate use of force. Unlike most martial arts, Hapkido utilizes more than 1100 core techniques, which are intuitively modified or combined to create thousands of variations. Self-defense techniques are characterized by a constant flow of striking, blocking, holding, and throwing techniques. Constant motion and fluid circular movements are designed to blend with an opponent’s force. Tactics often alternate between highly aggressive and defensive modes, with power being generated through use of one’s entire body. Internal energy development is fundamental to all training, leading to increased health and greater efficiency in self-defense techniques.

Home About BMA What's New Training ... Links Hapkido Art of Coordinated Power Hapkido is a comprehensive Korean self-defense system involving joint locks, pressure points, throws, kicks, strikes, and a few weapons. Han Jae Ji synthesized techniques brought to Korea by Yong Sool Choi with traditional Taoist temple arts to form a nonaggressive martial art that stresses self-development. In Hapkido you learn how to protect yourself in the full range of self-defense situations from an unwelcome touch to an immediate threat to your life. This range of control allows you to protect yourself fully without needing to hurt the opponent more than is necessary for the situation, which is why every police officer in Korea must have a black belt in Hapkido. Size, strength, and gender are unimportant in Hapkido a woman or child can control a large man with proper technique. Beck Martial Arts is one of very few places around Dallas or in the DFW area where Hapkido is taught as it should be not just a few techniques folded into some other style, an occasional seminar, or once a week only to black belts. Study of Hapkido can benefit you in many ways:
  • self-defense general health balance flexibility coordination courtesy self-control discipline concentration self-confidence stress management weapons techniques
In the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, Hapkido is hard to find. There are many schools that claim to teach it but only have a few techniques. Some are of the '8 martial arts in one' type that take a few (usually poorly done) techniques from many arts and put them together into a mismatch. Some are a combination of
