The Quiet of the Backstretch
by David Helwig
Charlottetown Driving Park Pinette Raceway is hidden in a small patch of woods not far from our big frame house. You get there by turning down a clay road just past Mike's Lobster Pound on the TransCanada Highway, about 40 kilometres east of Charlottetown. There's a handmade sign for the track, the outline of a horse, driver and sulky. The raceway has a wooden grandstand, a frame building with a snack bar, and, farther off, a longer, lower building with stalls for the horses. Everything is painted white with green trim. The oval of the track is the red ochre of Prince Edward Island earth. When you climb into the grandstand, you look across at a stand of tall spruce that runs half the length of the backstretch. The other half opens across fields to the shining surface of the Pinette River. Sometimes I have seen the quick, short beat of an osprey's wings as it circles over the water, hunting, waiting to dive. On the quiet of the backstretch between races I have seen a fox trot by on its dainty feet, out of the spruce woods and back in.

Most of those who come to the track live close by. A girl of 16 takes your dollar admission on the way in, and a few minutes later she turns up in the grandstands selling tickets for the night's raffle. There's no rush to the betting windows here; there are no betting windows. No purse for the winner either. The races are just for the fun of racing, for the pleasure of seeing the long delicate legs moving in harmony, pulling the slender wheels of the carts twice around the oval.

Because the horse was the principal means of transportation, the pride and competitive spirit of horse owners naturally developed into speed contests and shows which led to scheduled events. So when the original organizers of the Society held its first meeting at a fixed location, they had a trotting course which they voted to enlarge to one half-mile on November 20, 1858. In 1864 W. W. Abbott of Fryeburg wanted to solicit funds for enlarging and improving the track and actually raised $75.00, but in 1865 the committee decided to leave the track as it was due to the indebtedness of the Society. In 1871 another committee was chosen to consider improvements to the course, and it was voted that a one-third mile track be made and fenced by June of 1872. It is doubtful that they did enlarge it, however, because it appears that in 1881 the Society had a one-quarter mile track where the H. C. Baxter Corn Company packing plant was later located. Information is scarce in the minutes of the meetings about racing until in 1885 it was voted to move to a new larger area for the permanent location. At that time it was stated that there was a track at the first fairgrounds, but the length of it is somewhat unclear. We do know that giant oxen pulled stone rollers to smooth the first racetracks. The new track at what is now the present location is one-half mile long.

Luc Picks Up Breeders Crown Win Number Nine
(August 31)-Luc ended a six-year Breeders Crown drought on Saturday night at Mohawk as he was victorious in the $266,075 Breeders Crown Open Mare Trot with Brigham Dream.
Brigham Dream, who was fresh off an elimination win last Friday night for Luc and trainer Nicolas Vandenplas, settled in sixth in the early going as Susies Magic and Bruschette traded the early lead through fractions of 27.4 and 56.4. As the field raced up the backstretch, Luc tipped out with Brigham Dream, and he was able to flush the cover of Flash Lightning and Yannick Gingras to get a second-over ride to the 1:25.3 three-quarter mark.
In the stretch, Luc finally guided Brigham Dream to clear racetrack, and she trotted by Bruschette. Luc then just showed her the whip and kept her trotting to the wire to win by half a length in 1:53.2. Susies Magic was the runner-up and Exotic Destination was third.

Betting on a Harness Horse Race
    from the USTA
Being a handicapper (that's what you are when you place a bet ) is really trying to guess or figure out what will happen during a harness race and who will finish the race in front. It's easy, it's exciting and it's fun. So c'mon...read on and we'll explain how to pick your winners. How Easy is It How do You Handicap a Race How are the Races Classified What to Say at the Betting Window ... What Now How easy is it? To select your first horse, you can do the following: Number a slip of paper for each number horse in a race. Place the numbers in a hat. Close eyes and pick one. Place your bet on that horse. Congratulations! You're a handicapper. You'd be surprised how many people use a method like this to pick winners. If you leave your bet entirely to chance, you're as likely to hit a winner as not, even without knowing anything about horses. Betting horses can be that simple.
You don't have to use these slips of paper. You can throw darts or draw straws. Try numerology or your lucky number. Bob's favorite is to count the stars and divide by your age, or bet the horse's name that appeals to you most, or your favorite color. Picking horses at random can be fun, and it can produce winners. Or you can try and improve your chances by using these tools:
    INTUITION
Sometimes you're feeling lucky. Go for it. There's no way to predict the odds of success by this method. It's up to you and your lucky stars. Want better odds? Move on.

simply the best 'pacing horse' ever Niatross Home World Records Stakes Records Track Records ... Hurricane Wilma Perfection , you catch glimpses of it in sports - a golfer scoring a hole-in-one, a pitcher tossing a perfect game or a goalie shutting out the opposition in hockey. Whether it is the competitiveness of a Michael Jordan or the creativity of a Wayne Gretzky - sport is drama and when players or competitors of this ilk are involved it is usually exciting and often breathtaking. Niatross possessed the above-mentioned traits which complemented his charisma, grace and class - Niatross was perfection in a racehorse. Niatross thrilled harness racing fans as he stormed across North America in 1979 and 1980 smashing world, stakes and track records wherever he ventured and leaving a legacy in our sport which has not been approached since.
