Loch Lomond Highland Games, 2011
on Saturday 16th July 2011. We Hope you enjoy the new look wesite Loch Lomond Highland Games is situated at the southern end of Loch Lomond in the middle of the quiet village of Balloch. The Games were started in July 1967 by a group of local businessmen who were keen to promote the area and restore its popularity with local people and tourists alike. In those days the challenge was to raise £500 to run the event in the hope that sufficient people would turn up in sufficient numbers to warrant making the Games an annual event. We now appear to have achieved that aim and are now numbered amongst the top three Highland Games events in the country, with approximately 10,000 to 15,000 visitors coming to the Games each year. The Games are a traditional Highland Games and has now over £15,000 Prize Money and Trophies for Local and Open Events. It now hosts:-
  • The Official Scottish Highland Games Association World Heavyweight
Championship (Ball, Hammer and Caber Weights)
  • 87. Rocky Mountain Highland Games
Each August, the tradition of Highland games comes alive for two days at Highlands Heritage Park, thousands of miles from the land in which they were born.

The games are held on the town's links once the home of Burntisland's Golf Club, the 11th-oldest golf club in the world. These games are the second oldest in the world dating back to 1652. They were originally held on St Peter's day (29th June) but have changed over the years to the third Monday of July. The market day tradition is kept alive with a large number of market traders descending on the down for the day with bumper crowds (50,000 in 2004) attending the games, market and summer fairground which also visits Burntisland during the summer months. The one-day event showcases all the traditional Highland Games. Particularly well supported is the Highland Dancing with competitors from numerous countries often taking part. The
