Hiking and Fitness
What’s unique about Mountain Trek is our attention to and ability to accommodate all fitness levels. Fitness levels range from guests who exercise infrequently to those with a regular exercise program. We recognize the importance of individual attention for each of our guests to feel comfortable when they begin hiking and exercising daily as for some this is a new experience and it can feel quite daunting. This personalized attention adds to our guests’ comfort level with the program and their ability to discuss their specific goals with one of professional guides. We achieve this by limiting the number of guests between 10-16 at any given time. This not only creates the ability for our guides to be give personalized attention but also creates an intimate environment amongst the guests who can provide support and motivation for each other. Hiking
Flexibility is the key in meeting the needs of our hikers that range from guests with no hiking experience to those who are avid hikers. We employ 4 guides to hike with each group of 16 guests each week and hike on different trails of varying levels of difficulty, views and experiences. Our trails are mostly within a 45 minutes to 1.5 hour drive from our lodges, although from our Ainsworth Lodge, some advanced trails are a 2 hour drive. These drives are well worth the opportunity to access these

Navigation Assistance
When hiking through any terrainespecially unknown territorya map is a must have item. The map most widely used for hiking excursions is the topographic map. The topographic map shows contour lines as well as natural and man-made features of the surrounding land and terrain. The topographic map is indispensable for the hiker chartering unfamiliar territory. Even in familiar grounds, a hiker can get easily turned around. The map provides reassurance of direction and where conservation offices and roads are located. A compass is also an important tool to have alongside of a map. The compass will aid in direction to help the map make sense. GPS and navigational systems should be used in back country hiking excursions or trails with rugged terrain. Electronic assistance will help assure the hiker reaches the destination safely.

Hiking Safety

The 8.0 mile roundtrip jaunt to Charlies Bunion, located on the Appalachian Trail, is a popular day hike. Caution is advised in the backcountry. The park's backcountry is managed as a natural area where the forces of nature determine trail conditions. Please be prepared for swollen streams, bridge washouts, downed trees, and trail erosion—particularly between December and May due to the seasonal nature of the trail maintenance program.
Hikers enjoy the Smoky Mountains during all months of the year with every season offering is own special rewards. During winter, the absence of deciduous leaves opens new vistas along trails and reveals stone walls, chimneys, foundations, and other reminders of past residents. Spring provides a weekly parade of wildflowers and flowering trees. In summer, walkers can seek out cool retreats among the spruce-fir forests and balds or follow splashy mountain streams to roaring falls and cascades. Autumn hikers have crisp, dry air to sharpen their senses and a varied palette of fall colors to enjoy.
One of the most daunting tasks facing hikers is choosing a trail. Start by deciding on what you would like to see.

California Hiking - A Virtual Presentation
CyberHikes is dedicated to providing information about California Hiking trails. All trails are day hikes which will allow them to be hiked by anyone in moderately good health. Because walking is so beneficial to health, it is important to open up as many hiking opportunities as possible. CyberHikes will explore the abundance of parks and open spaces that are available to the casual hiker in California. Through the extensive use of pictures, maps and text, a virtual experience is achieved. Central California Hiking will be emphasized due its proximity to my home. I would love to hear any comments about CyberHikes by eMail to cyberguide@cyberhikes.com . If you have the time I invite you to read the story behind CyberHikes.

A 1,500 mile trail system provides access into the Forest and spectacular vistas of the North Cascades Range. Nearly 1,000 lakes, more glaciers than any national forest outside of Alaska, thousands of waterfalls, extensive old-growth forests, two volcanoes, vast alpine meadows, and seven major rivers await the dedicated hiker. Trails range from the flat and easy Ice Caves Trail, which in one mile passes from a temperate forest to an arctic-alpine environment, to the ups and downs of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, which traverses over 100 miles of the alpine country on the eastern edge of the Forest. Whatever your desire for a hike, you will find it on the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Click on an area to open/close a list of trails. Hiking, Trail notes:
Aletsch:
A dramatic change in landscape and culture, here in the Wallis you find another place in the sun. Protected by mountains there are those inviting old chalets. On a terrace overlooking part of the Rhonetal is my favorite holiday village Bettmeralp. The lower station of the cable car is combined with the railway station "Betten" of the Furka Oberalp Bahn (FOB). Andermatt, Gotthard: Gotthard Pass was for ages a most important route for crossing the alps. Up to this days the importance has not changed. It is demonstrated by the amazing constructions that you see everywhere: The main road, the autobahn, the railway line, the protections against avalanches, the tunnels (a new railway tunnel between Erstfeld and Biasca is now under construction), the mountain railroad between Goeschenen and Andermatt! But it's also a great place for hiking tours. Near Andermatt in Realp, there is also a mountain golf course. Goms This lovely valley on the eastern end of the Kanton Wallis is in "stones throw distance". On the other side of Furka it's accessable in a few Minutes by a rail tunnel.
