Bet money and the larger the bet, the harder the opponent will be. The game goes to 11 points and you must win by 2 points. You get one point if one horseshoe lands closer to the stake than both of the opponent’s horseshoes, two points if both of your horseshoes are closer than the opponent's, and three for a ringer.

History of Horseshoes
Dating back as early as the second century, iron plates or rings were nailed on horses' feet in Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Horseshoes is thought to have evolved from a couple of different games, the Grecian game of discuss and the game of ring toss called Quoits. Horseshoe historians have not been able to discover when the game of quoits or horseshoes was changed so that it was pitched at two stakes, but it is pretty well established that horseshoe pitching had its origin in the game of quoits and that quoits is a modification of the ancient Grecian game of discus throwing. Horseshoes Playing Surfaces:
You do not need to build a formal pitching court to enjoy the game of horseshoes. The game can be played simply by driving two stakes 40 feet apart. A layer of sand around the stakes is recommended.

Horseshoes
Horseshoes is a popular and great game that can be played anywhere from the beach to your own backyard. The equipment is minimal and the rules are simple and easy to follow. Horseshoes is also a game that can be enjoyed by the mature and young making it a great game for family functions, barbeques, tail gate parties and any fun function in all. A better options for kids might be cornhole as the bags are safer, but with supervision you can absolutely have the kids enjoy as well. For a game of horseshoes you will need two metal stakes and four horseshoes, which is really all other than a paper to write down your score if you can’t keep track in your head. The scoring for a game of horseshoes is simple a ‘ringer’ is three points and close (within 6 inches) scores you one point. The stakes are driven into the ground 40 feet from one another and each player, or team of players stands at opposite horseshoes.
The players flip a coin or randomly decide who will throw first. Then each player takes turns tossing all of their horseshoes toward the stake trying to hook the horseshoe around the stake which is called a ‘ringer’, or get as close to their stake a possible. After the first player has thrown all his horseshoes the second player throws her horseshoes at the same stake. After both players have thrown all their horseshoes the players walk to the stake record their points, collect their horseshoes and then throw them in turn to the opposite stake. An average game of horseshoes is played to 21 points and the first player or team to score 21 points wins the match.

In-Depth Information
Rules of Horseshoes
The two metal posts in horseshoes are situated forty feet apart. Ideally the ground between the two stakes should be level. Classically the ground around the stakes may be sandy, but is nearly always loose dirt. If this area is not dug up, a few games with horseshoes flying into the pit, will likely convert the ground. The area around the stake is called a pit and may be surrounded by heavy wooden frame built level to the ground, and may even have a sturdy wooden backstop. Two persons, or two teams of two persons each may play the game. The players begin by choosing a set of two horseshoes based on color, traditionally green or red. Horseshoes will also be marked with an "A" or "B" in anticipation of the inevitable time when the paint is worn from the sets. The player to throw or pitch first is determined. This can be done by chance, or a pitch of one horseshoe from each player with the player getting closest to the stake determining the beginning order of play. (There is no scoring advantage to pitching first or last.) The pitching line is within three feet of the player's own stake, or approximately 37 feet from the stake towards which he is throwing. Players should at all times be aware when horseshoes are being pitched. Even the best horseshoe pitcher may sometimes throw a wild horseshoe. The large, heavy, metal object can cause serious injury even when flipped sideways and rolling along the ground. The best position for other players and spectators is behind the pitcher or out of range of wild pitches. Other adjustments can be made to move the foul line for other players. Children nine or under can pitch from the half-way point (20 feet). Juniors and women may pitch from anywhere behind the 27 foot line.

Horseshoes, Nails, Saddles, and Riding By Mary Bellis Sculptures and drawings that date from the 2nd millennium BC show men and women on horseback. The saddle probably originated in the societies of the Asian steppes (as well as the the stirrup and the horse collar) and received a high degree of development in medieval Europe. It is unknown who invented the first horseshoe. Early Asian horsemen used horse booties made from leather and plants. During the first century, the Romans made leather and metal shoes called "hipposandals". By the 6th and 7th centuries, European horsemen had begun nailing metal shoes to horses' hooves. Around 1000 AD, cast bronze horseshoes with nail holes had became common in Europe. The 13th and 14th centuries brought the widespread manufacturing of iron horseshoes. Hot-shoeing, the process of heating the horseshoe before shoeing the horse, became common in the 16th century. All before the first horseshoe was ever patented.
