Return to Island Aquarium Menu The Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus)
Although horseshoe crabs look dangerous, they are not. And they are really not crabs at all; they are distant relatives of the spider and are probably descended from the ancient order Eurypterida Like the Atlantic moon snail , the lightning whelk , the knobbed whelk , and the channeled whelk , they feed on clams; they also include worms and other invertebrates in their diet. The horseshoe crab places a clam near its mouth in the center of its underside where its legs are attached and grinds and crushes with the burr-like sections of the legs. The first four of the five pairs of legs are used for walking, while the last pair, located near the gills, have leaf-like flaps that are used for pushing. (The small pincers on the last pair are also used for cleaning the gills in the abdomen.) Males can be distinguished by the first pair of legs which are heavier than those of the female. The spike-like tail serves as a rudder, and, if the crab is flipped upside down, it may bend its abdomen at the point where it joins the main shell (carapace) and dig into the sand with the tail to support itself while it turns over.

http://www.warner.redclay.k12.de.us/introhsc.html
Site created by 5th grade students at Warner School Horseshoe crabs play an important role in the Delaware Bay's food web, the biomedical industry, and the Atlantic coast fisheries. They are one of the oldest species on earth. Many people refer to them as "living fossils" . They were here 100 million years before the dinosaur. Yet, in spite of how long they have been around, many people today know very little about horseshoe crabs. They see them on the beach and don't even know what they are. They don't realize they may owe their lives to these creatures and their blue blood. Today many people believe their numbers are declining. There has been much controversy over whether to put restrictions on the harvesting of horseshoe crabs. ABOUT MARK
My name is Mark Baugher. I established my horseshoeing business in 1978. I went to a good horseshoeing school and then began a year long apprenticeship with the most demanding farrier I have ever encountered. This experience was hard, painful and beneficial. I was prepared for years of shoeing on the Illinois racetrack.
My proudest time was being asked to be the official horseshoer for the 1981 Hambletonian in DuQuoin Illinois. Shoeing million dollar horses and collaborating with their owners and trainers was a big experience for me.
I went from there to owning and operating my own horseshoeing school. I taught forge work and lameness shoeing. We hand forged every shoe to better the skills of my students.
My many years of shoeing have brought every type of lame horse and interference problem to me. I have found that a long, careful, unhurried exam is NECESSARY to get the problem understood. With good information I can begin the process of finding the shoeing necessary to help the horse. Many trips in and out of the shop to make changes are very common.
Sometimes I will sit for hours and watch a horse move. If I am patient I will eventually see things that are overlooked. The secret is to let the horse reveal his problem and this is not done quickly. I take the time that is necessary and refuse to get in a hurry.
