Human Powered Vehicles
As Emeritus Faculty, I would like to assemble a team of students to research and develop a variety of ALTERNATE BICYCLE DESIGNS. Students engaged in these projects would design and fabricate high efficiency upright, prone, or recumbent bicycles. The goal of this activity is to explore the human factors, aerodynamics and safety advantages of alternate bicycle design, as well as investigate alternative materials for use in prototype construction. The bicycles would incorporate full or partial fairing, and adhere to either the International Human Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA) regulations for possible competition in the IHPVA speed championships, or the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Human Powered Vehicle Challenge. Team requirements: 2 to 3 - MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS with mechanisms and fluids experiences. - - drop me a line! Return to Norm Asper's web page.

The wait is over!
Like many ideas this one was founded in enthusiasm and the feeling that change would be a benefit to all of us. As the enthusiasm waned the lack of benefit became increasingly apparent. With vague guidelines, lack of volunteers to fill yet even more positions and no legal funding source the association of National Representatives had dwindled down to about 6 with only about 4 communicating regularly.
With the passing years members felt alienated from the process of decision making about rules, events

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Sherpa carrying wood to Mount Everest base camp Human-powered transport is the transport of person(s) and/or goods using human muscle power. Like animal-powered transport , human-powered transport has existed since time immemorial in the form of walking running and swimming . Modern technology has allowed machines to enhance human-power. Although motorization has increased speed and load capacity, many forms of human-powered transport remain popular for reasons of lower cost, leisure physical exercise and environmentalism . Human-powered transport is sometimes the only type available, especially in underdeveloped or inaccessible regions.

Some of the (more successful) hpvs that I have built (Israel Urieli)
I bought my first touring bicycle as a 50th birthday present to myself and discovered that I was above the age that I could contort my body to that ridiculous position, and maintain it on a long tour. I suffered wrist pain, lower back pain, "tokhes" pain (Yiddish for "backside"). I subsequently tried Moulton bicycles, which were then the only touring bikes available with front and rear suspension, but with no relief. There seems to be a fundamental incompatibilty between the seat of a regular upright bike and the human anatomy. I then discovered recumbents, but was put off by the unastheaticly long chain and lack of portability of all the available recumbent designs. It seemed ridiculous to me that one would need a van to transport a recumbent to a point of departure, so I decided to design my own. I went to visit the guru - Don Harse , and threw myself at his feet "Teach me" was all that I could utter, and he did. Within a few months I had built my first recumbent design, posthumously named " Legbreaker 1 " (1993). Spending a sobering 6 months on crutches I decided to discontinue that series and start the Grasshopper series.

    Human Powered Vehicles:
the future of personal transportation by Nhoj Yesdnil
The auto industry is giving us the same lies that they did in the fifties and sixties about the future of cars, but now they promise pollution free machines, hydrogen-electric computer controlled cars. They even tell us that they can put more cars on the freeway; bumper to bumper at racing speeds. Some want to fill the skys with flying cars, as if fuel could get cheaper. That sounds insane to me. PRICE OF FUEL. There are 204 million motor vehicles (140m cars) in the U.S.A. 600 million worldwide, using 40 million gallons of gasoline a day producing Carbon dioxide emissions of about 7 billion metric tons annually and shooting up because of the governments misinformation campaign about global warming.
The world population is approximately 6.5 billion now, but an extra three billion people are expected by mid-century requiring three times as much energy. Obviusly the world needs voluntary populatuion control, but that’s even less likely to happen than cheap energy. As long as petroleum prices are kept artificially low (gas tax revolts, subsidized acquisition of oil by war, denial of global warming), the post industrial world will continue it's happy addiction! Eventually we will all have to pay the price for not changing our “way of life” when it was easy!!!

A few words about the IHPVA
The IHPVA acts as the sanctioning body for new World Records in human powered land, water and air vehicles set under the Rules of the International Human Powered Vehicle Association ("IHPVA"). The IHPVA may also act as a sanctioning body for races and other sporting events and records in non-stored-fuel land, water and air vehicles.
Additionally the IHPVA serves as a source of information for all human powered land, water and air records and all other records pertinent to the pursuit of human power. The IHPVA also acts as a source of technological information on human powered transportation.
To further these goals, the IHPVA organizes and promotes periodic competitions on land, water and in the air. Annually, the IHPVA holds or sanctions a HUMAN POWERED SPEED CHAMPIONSHIPS. The principal object of the contests is to combine the best in technology with the best in athletic ability to obtain the fastest and most efficient human powered vehicles in the water, on land, and in the air; and to showcase ongoing technological development for speed and for practical human powered vehicles.
In all rules, regulations and executive decisions of the IHPVA, our overall philosophy and policy is to stimulate and not stifle competition and creativity, to help achieve this goal, the fewer and simpler the rules, restrictions and regulations, the better.

During the Memorial Day weekend, Melvin and the Nelsons, and third pilot Dave Rempe of Novato, were crowned grand champion at the 37th Annual Arcata-To-Ferndale Cross Country Kinetic Sculpture Race.
Melvin consists mostly of seven wheels and three sets of bicycle pedals and the art work, which is a vital element for this racing machine. Kinetic Sculpture Racing has been called a sport, a hobby, an engineering contest and an art-form. It is all of that, and to many participants it is almost a second family. Says Tappy Nelson: "It is creative, humorous, fun, crazy and healthy and we get to hang out with other creative, humorous, fun, crazy and healthy people. We love our kinetic family."
