FAILTE - "Welcome" to the Gaelic Football & Hurling Association of Australasia website.
Gaelic Football - "the all-round game" of hand, foot and round ball skills - has been played across Australia and NZ for many decades by Irish immigrants, visa workers and backpackers keen to play the national sport of their youth. In Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Auckland the ancient game of Hurling also is played. These days Gaelic football is played by women, men, boys and girls of all backgrounds across all States of Australia (Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart) and Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in New Zealand. Primarily this reflects the enthusiasm of Aussies and Kiwis finding the excitement and joy of the world's best all-round game. It also has recently commenced in Hobart, Tasmania in both men’s and women’s codes. Gaelic football is the most popular sport of Ireland in both participation and spectator numbers. It is the other parent game along with Aussie Rules to the International Rules competition played between Ireland and the Australian Football League.

Hurling
Hurling is the most characteristic of Irish games, its origins are in Ireland Hurling follows the same scoring system and similar rules as the other major Gaelic Athletics Association sport, Gaelic Football , but the two games are played differently. Both games are played by 15 men a side and the object of each game is to score more points and goals than the opposing team. Each game has the distinctive H shaped goal posts, a goal is scored when the ball is put into the net, while a point is scored by hitting the ball over the bar but within the H posts. The game of Hurling is played with sticks or hurleys, which are used to move the ball, known as a sliotar. The hurley is similar in shape to a hockey stick and is traditionally made from Ash wood. A sliotar is a hard leather ball of 65mm in diameter. Cork or Kilkenny and the two have battled it out three times. In 2004 Cork met Kilkenny in a game with it all to play, the Cats were chasing their first treble, while Cork wanted revenge for their defeat the previous year. With both teams winning 28 titles each, this final was to be the decider. After a tight game Cork won 0-17 to 0-9 and went on to win the next year. At the time of writing Cork and Kilkenny are due a fourth final together in 2006, which will make it another treble for Cork should they win. Hurling is uniquely Irish and if you get the opportunity to watch a match while visiting Ireland be sure to take it up!
