Hwa Rang Do
Intro:
Hwa Rang Do is a comprehensive martial arts system whose training encompasses unarmed combat, weaponry, internal training and healing techniques. Translated, Hwa Rang Do means "the way of flowering manhood".
Origin:
Korea
History:
The brothers lived and trained as the sole students with the monk mostly in weekends and during school vacations but also trained in other martial arts when they were unable to train under Suahm Dosa. Influences include Boxing, Yudo, Komdo, and Tang Soo Do. In addition the Lee Brothers attained Master level of Dae Dong Ryu Yu Sul (modern name - Hapkido) from its founder Choi Yong Sool in October 1956. In 1967, at the request of President Park, Dr. Joo Bang Lee organized the unification of the Korean martial arts and directed the Unified Korean Martial Arts Exposition on May 27, 1968 at the Jang Chung Sports Arena in Seoul. Since it was difficult for all martial art organization leaders to agree on methods of administration, this organization was also disbanded shortly after the exposition. Following the dissolution, Dr. Joo Bang Lee concentrated his efforts solely on the development of his martial art to the exclusion of all other martial arts. He renamed it Hwa Rang Do translated to mean "The Way of the Flowering Manhood". (Do - represents "the way" or the "martial art"). Also this marked the first time the character for "Way" was used in connection with the Hwa Rang and the unarmed martial arts.

  • Yu - soft, fluid force of flowing water. The power of Yu is deceptive; relenting under force; it draws its attack into its own stream of power and re-directs it.
  • Won - is movement in circular directions. Its power may be seen in the rock at the end of a sling, or the power developed from a spinning motion.
  • Hwa - as the third element of Um, it represents unity and combination.
  • Kang - is hard like steel or stone. Its power is illustrated in the form of a closed fist in a thrust punch or a straight front kick.
  • Kak - means angles. Its form is found in the correct angle of the joint when applying breaking and throwing techniques or straight angular blocks.
  • Kan - means maintaining proper distance. It is the opposite aspect of Hwa or combination and its form is found in understanding the distance between two opponents.
  • NAE GONG
    • Kyung Ki - making the body light
    • Jung Ki - making the body heavy
    • Chyel Ki -making the body hard as steel
    • Ma Ki - making the body numb
    • Shin Ki -increasing mental concentration and awareness
  • WAE GONG
  • MOO GI GONG - involves the offensive and defensive use of the over 108 traditional weapons found within 20 categories of weaponry. By learning these various weapon systems, the practitioner can most effectively utilize any object as a weapon as the situation demands.

PERSON HISTORY OF HWA RANG DO
The original version of this article was written September 20, 1993 as a preamble to the first meeting of the United Federation of Hwa Rang Do. The meeting was called together by all the First Generation Hwa Rang Do Instructors who for a variety of reasons are no longer associated with the World Hwa Rang Do Association headed by Grand Master Joo Bang Lee. I loosely referred to the group as the Renegades, but in truth these Instructors have been involved with this art and others for twenty to thirty years and have no need to rebel against anything. They are accomplished martial artists with their own separate identities and they were seeking a friendship and a platform to discuss the art and the system in a fraternal atmosphere.
The senior instructors at the meeting included Gil Kim, Vicente Montenegro, Mike De Alba, Randy Warner, Jessie Lechuga and myself. Other Second wave instructors included James De Alba, Rodrigo Munoz, Bruce Carleton, Ed Antkowiak, Joe Nepomuceno, Bob Donnelly, John Bennis, Terry King, and others who I can not recall. Many were not present, but supportive of the goals of the group. This first meeting was held at Mike De Alba's Dojang in San Fransico in December of 1993.
A CONTROVERSY
An article was written by Robert Young and published in the Journal of Asian Martial Arts, titled "History of Tae Kyon" Vol. 2.2/1993. Young provokes a number of skeptical reactions to the promotional history made by nearly every prominent founder of Korean systems and questions the authenticity of their claims to ancient Korean roots. Young's contention is that both Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do are direct descendants of Japanese and Okinawan styles, mostly of Shotokan. There is considerable evidence for this point of view in the historical record as well as in an examination of the forms and routines inherent in the two systems. The author rightly concludes that there is no historical evidence to connect either art to the ancient Korean forms of combat; he contends that such claims are purely promotional. I won't repeat what he says because the reader can read the article and draw their own conclusions.

Hwa Rang Do
"The Way of The Flowering Knights" History Hwa Rang Do is an 1800 year old Korean Martial and Healing Arts system. Its theory is based on the Um-Yang principle which states that all things in nature possess equal opposites and the state of balance of these opposing forces creates Harmony in one's life. During the ancient times in the kingdom of Shilla, an elite group of young males were selected from noble families and were taught literature, dance, poetry, horsemanship, philosophy, science, and the art of war. They were known as the "Hwa Rang" the Flowering Knights, and due to their physical and mental strengths, these Hwa Rang warriors lead their kingdom in the unification of the Korean peninsula for the first time. This system has been passed down to modern times, and in 1960 Dr. Joo Bang Lee brought this system back to the public when he began teaching in Seoul, Korea. Since then, Hwa Rang Do has spread throughout the world, while keeping a firm hold on its tradition. For more detailed information on Hwa Rang Do history please CLICK HERE.
