He started his martial arts career studying Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu Karate in 1981 under Nagamine Shoshin Sensei in Naha. Pitchford Sensei studied under Nagamine Sensei for over seven years, earning his Shodan in Karate before studying under Kishaba Sensei in Yonabaru. He studied under Kishaba Sensei, a student of Hohan Soken Sensei, until Kishaba Sensei's death. Pitchford Sensei achieved the rank of Roku Dan, Sixth Degree Black Belt, in February 1998.
In 1982 Pitchford Sensei met Dr. Gordon Warner and started practicing Mugai Ryu Iaihyodo (Iaido). In 1984 he achieved shodan. Since then, Pitchford Sensei received Taikai Sho while a Godan for excellence in Iaido. Pitchford Sensei received his Rokudan in 1995 from the Nippon Iaido Federation.
While still a Godan he was awarded two scrolls (something usually only given after one achieves Rokudan) from the soke (headmaster) of Mugai Ryu. These scrolls are a traditional license and a scroll of strategy awarded when a certain level of skill is achieved. This license is from the style, in this case Mugai Ryu, and independent of any rank award from the federation. The next level of scroll is known as Menkyo Kaiden and is the scroll of full transmission of the style.
Pitchford Sensei also was awarded the rank of Yonmokuroku by Shitama Sensei, the soke of Sosuishitsu Ryu Kumiuchi Koshi no Mawari, in 1999. This rank is the equivalent of a Yondan. Sosuishitsu Ryu is a style of jujitsu (Kumiuchi) and Iai (Koshi no Mawari) dating back over 350 years. Pitchford Sensei is a student of Usuki Sensei; the head of the Tokyo dojo of Sosuishitsu Ryu.

Iaido - Definition
Iaido ), also sometimes called iaijutsu iaijutsu ) or battojutsu ) is the art of drawing the katana , cutting down the opponent, flipping blood from the blade, and then re-sheathing the katana in one fluid movement. Modern day exponents typically use iaito instead of shinken at least in beginning stages of study. The emphasis is on drawing the sword and attacking as quickly as possible. Starting positions can be from combative postures or from everyday sitting or standing positions. Practitioners could expect a surprise attack at any time, and the ability to react quickly from an everyday starting position was considered essential. The Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-ryu included iaijutsu in its curriculum in 15th century , and first schools dedicated exclusively to sword drawing appeared some time during the late or early 17th century . Most modern schools consider a samurai called Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto no Shigenobu ( ) as the originator of iaido. Not much is known about his life, and some scholars doubt his existence as a historical figure. The two largest schools of iaido that are practised today, Muso Shinden-ryu and Muso Jikiden Eishin-ryu , both claim a lineage starting with Hayashizaki.

"The way of harmonizing oneself in action. Iaido is practiced in a traditional way, by doing kata (a predetermined set of movements in defense against one or more opponents). In order to properly perform each kata, you must learn posture and movement, grip, and proper cutting. Even though you practice against imaginary opponents, to maintain Iaido as a budo it is critical to understand how the movements apply to real opponents. In Iaido, the blade is drawn and cuts in the same motion. Each Iaido kata consists of the draw, one or more cuts, cleaning the blade, and returning it to the scabbard. As a fighting art of the modern world it is all too easy to see the sword arts superficially and criticize them as inappropriate, simply because we do not walk along the street carrying a sword. The way of the martial artist should be to avoid conflict. This was explained thousands of years ago by Sun Tsu in The Art of War and later by masters of strategy.

    Welcome
Posted September 26th, 2010 by Iss Hogai Welcome to the Iaido Association of Ireland Website. The Iaido Association of Ireland is dedicated to encouraging the development of those currently involved in, and those interested in studying the martial art of Iaido. Iaido is a Japanese martial art involving the use of the katana (the Japanese sword, often referred to as a samurai sword), and among the pages of this site you can learn a little more about the history of Iaido and many of the aspects involved in training in this art. However, no articles, website, book or DVD can replace real training in the dojo nor can they give you a true and fair assessment of what it is like to train in this art. As such we would encourage all those interested in the art to pop down to one of the recognized and listed dojos on the right hand column and speak to an instructor.

Dojo Home About Iaido News Classes ... Contact Iaido, the Way of the Sword, is the art of drawing and using the traditional Japanese sword. Iaido was practiced by the ancient Samurai for centuries.
Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido
Iaido consists of a number of techniques, or waza, that represent combative situations where generally one or more opponents initiate an attack. Although the waza represent combative encounters, the deeper purposes of iaido are to develop mental discipline, awareness, and mental and physical harmony through practice and control of body and sword movements. Iaido is not considered a sport, but rather an ancient traditional art based on a unique oral tradition for the development of mind, body, and spirit. This art form has been passed from teachers to students in an unbroken line over hundreds of years, so it is the responsibility of each practitioner to learn and practice the techniques correctly so that the tradition is preserved and can be passed on intact to the next generation. Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu, meaning "peerless, direct transmission, true faith style", is the most widely practiced style of Iaido in Japan. It has a lineage of roughly 450 years, making it the second oldest martial art form in Japan.

http://oregonstate.edu/groups/kendo/iaido.html
Iaido Iaido (ee-eye-doh) is a type of Japanese swordsmanship centered around drawing a sword (katana), quickly dispatching one or more adversaries, and returning the sword to its scabbard. While the name iaido is a twentieth century invention, the art itself has been around for some 400 years. Though older schools of martial arts did (and still do) contain sword drawing techniques as part of their curriculum, it is a swordsman named Jinsuke Shigenobu who is generally credited as the founder of what became modern iaido. In the second half of the sixteenth century, he founded the Shimmei Muso Ryu school of battojutsu (sword-drawing technique). Since that time, there have been various branchings and renamings of his school and its descendants. In 1932, Nakayama Hakudo renamed his branch of the art Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido. Eventually, people began to use iaido as the term to describe other battojutsu schools. Today, the two most common iaido schools, both in the USA and Japan, are Muso Shinden Ryu and Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu. Though these two schools separated in the early 18th century, the curriculum and techniques are nearly identical, with the differences being mostly in minor details. In addition to the various traditional schools, many people also practice the Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei (ZNKR) Seitei Gata (All Japan Kendo Federation Example Forms). As modern kendo is practiced mainly with a flexible bamboo sword (shinai), practitioners of kendo (The way of the sword) were becoming less and less swordsmen and more and more shinai-men. In order to rectify this, in 1967 the ZNKR introduced seven example forms based on traditional schools, but not strictly the forms of any one school. In 1980, three more forms were introduced, and in 2001, another two forms were added, bringing the total number of seitei gata to 12.
