    Iaido
Iaido is a Japanese martial art that is based around the sword and the techniques that train participants to remove a katana from its sheath, strike down an opponent, wipe the blood from the sword and replace it in its sheath in one smooth motion. Iaido is intended to be performed by one person against one or more imaginary opponents. Iaido does not necessarily include cutting techniques. It is more concerned with the motions: unsheathing and re-sheathing the sword. The intent of Iaido is to react quickly to an attacker from a variety of positions. People who practice Iaido must be able to draw their sword and fend off an attack quickly. Starting positions can vary. You can begin from a combat stance or from casual standing or sitting positions. Iaido includes many forms of Japanese swordsmanship, all of which are intended to be non-combative. People who practice this skill against other humans do not use actual blades. They usually use wooden blades and wear a great deal of protective gear. People who practice alone use blades against imaginary opponents.

The name of this dojo (or trainingschool) is refering in a symbolic way to one sword (i-to), in this case one person, who was, and still is the driving force behind this Dojo. The symbol pictured beneath is the formal crest of this Dojo. The Aoi Go Mon (A circle with three leaves of bleu-green) was the J-Mon (main crest) of the TOKUGAWA dynasty. How to Use a Sword
    Iaido
Iaido means "the way of mental presence and immediate reaction." - approximately.
Iaido ia is a Japanese sword art typicaly associated with smooth, controlled movements of drawing the sword from the saya , striking an imaginary opponent, removing blood from the blade, and then replacing the sword back in the saya. An unsharpened sword called an Iaito is typically used. However, advanced Iaido practitioners may use a sharp sword as well. The creation of Iaido is generally credited with Hayashizaki Jinsuke (Minamoto no) Shigenobu in the early 16th century. However, around a century before his birth, a similar sword art known as iaijutsu had been developed by Iizasa Ienao, the founder of the Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu. Iaido should not be confused with Kendo or Kenjutsu
    • Kendo teaching does not teach drawing and re-sheathing techniques. A flexible sword called a shinai is used, and there is no saya (scabbard) (link). Kendo is practiced with a partner in full contact training or in kata practice. Iaido is typically a solo art, or sometimes with a partner (but never full contact like Kendo).

    IAIDO Kenshukai
The Art of the Japanese Sword Iaido is a Japanese martial art that trains in techniques of the sword. A real Japanese sword (katana), practice sword (iaito) or wooden sword (bokuto) is used in iaido practice. The term 'Iai' is taken from the Japanese phrase: 'Tsune ni ite, kyu ni awasu' . The meaning of this is, whatever we may be doing or wherever we may be, we must always be prepared for any situation. Iaido is not a sport. There is a pre-set form to an iaido kata, which is studied endlessly. Students strive to achieve precision and power in their form. Along the way they learn balance, grace, and control both of the body and the mind. Iaido is mostly performed solo, where the practitioner executes various techniques against single or multiple imaginary opponents. Iaido does not focus on overcoming an enemy, but on overcoming one's own self; therefore, the only opponent in iaido is the practitioner him or herself. At this dojo, we train in the classical style of Muso Shinden Ryu, and also in the more modern techniques of the All Japan Kendo Federation Iaido Division.

There are several sets of forms, each somewhat advancing in difficulty, that allow the student to learn and feel a style of swordsmanship that was practiced by the Samurai of old with traditions maintained through today. As the student progresses, the forms of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu will become the dominant methods practiced. Students aged 13 and older can begin studying Iaido at any time and may begin their first classes with loose, comfortable clothing (e.g. sweats and a t-shirt) and a bokken (wooden sword). Stages in training
      1. Keiko. This means quite simply training or practice. This is the stage during which the essential movements are perfected by slow repetition, by breaking the kata down into its component parts, by understanding how the techniques work in a fighting situation. With this practice the swordsman begins to understand the principles of Metsuke (correct use of the eyes), Seme (pressing or pushing) in order to control the opponent, of Maai (combative distance) and Ma (timing). This study takes about five years of regular practice. Overlapping with it, from about the third or fourth year, the swordsman will begin the practice of Tanren. 2. Tanren means to forge in the same way that a sword blade is forged, with hard work, and sweat, and many hours of dedication, folding together the hard and soft elements in the body, mind, and movement just as the sword gains its strength out of hard and soft steel. The student increasingly practises without concern for the correctness of the movements (though they must remain correct and effective) and repeats the kata uninterrupted with a feeling of Shinken Shobu (a fight to the death with a real sword). During this phase posture improved, movements become more natural, techniques become more effective because timing is better controlled and less predictable. As confidence increases and Kigurai (bearing, demeanour) develops, training moves into the phase called Renshu.
