Updates Joe's Valley San Rafael Swell Ice Climbing Joe's Valley is one of the better ice climbing areas in Utah and usually has the benefit of not being crowded. This beautiful valley on the edge of the San Rafael Swell has a multitude of good climbs within a short distance of a paved and plowed road. The striking sandstone provides a admirable back drop for the dozens of ice climbs in the area. Interested in viewing a short Ice Climbing video which was shot on Highway to Heaven, also known as Deadbolt? *Highway to Heaven Video* General Information: One experience I can pass along to you is during my first big fall while ice climbing the one thought that kept running through my head was "I sure am happy that I have all these razor blades strapped to my body". Fortunately, a crampon slice in my Gore-tex pants was the only casualty. The biggest fear an ice climber has is that their significant other will discover exactly how much money was spent on gear. Ice climbing is a sport that requires some expensive gear, so bring your VISA. You will require plastic boots, crampons, ice axes, ice screws and a weatherproof shell. This is in addition to much of the normal gear carried by a rock climber. Ice climbing takes place below freezing, sometimes well below, so dress accordingly. The ice climbing season in Joe's Valley is long by Utah standards and generally runs from mid November through late March. The sport of ice climbing is a challenge to rate because conditions can change by the hour, the day, and certainly by the year. When ice climbing, it is extremely important that you know how to read the ice because your safety depends on it.

Ice Climbing in the Alps: the Home Page Being puzzled about the future: under the icicle of the final pitch of Le Monde de Glace (Fournel) On the second pitch of the long march to Les Naines des Ravines (Fournel) Welcome to the Icehome Here it comes: a guide to selected ice climbing locations in the French and Italian Alps. This area is one of the most well known and accessible winter playgroung in the entire world, and every iceclimber should come over here at least once in a lifetime. Since there are litterally thousands of icefalls sparse along the Alps, this guide cannot be a complete list of sites, and in most cases it cannot offer the complete list of climbs of each site. However you will find a great deal of informations, pictures and detailed descriptions on the best and most representative climbs of the area. As of today the guide includes detailed descriptions of 58 icefalls plus essential indications on 72 more climbs, for a total of over 17450 meters of climbing (on February 26, 1997). Whenever I add new climbs to the guide these numbers are updated: check here to see if there is any new material. Hopefully this compilation of general informations will be useful for any ice climber that wants to pay a visit in some of the best cold spots of the western Alps. All the infos here are based on my personal knowledge and on friends and other ice-surfers contributions. Montain-Guide Ice Home Alps Vaudoise Arolla ... Ice Article Ice Climbing in Cogne, Val d'Aosta Cogne is the ice climbing mecca. It is an amazingly extensive area having over 200 routes and is a world class venue. Cogne is nestled in the Gran Paradiso region, and comprises of three valleys; Valielle, Valnontey and Val di Cogne. These valleys are surrounded by high alpine peaks such as the famous Gran Paradiso (4020m) and the glaciers that flow from these peaks flood the valley with cold air. The climbs are all at a relatively high altitude 1500m to 2500m and hence give very reliable ice climbing conditions. In fact this is probably the most reliable ice climbing venue in Europe. There is a huge range of grades and styles of climbs in Cogne from single pitch roadside cragging to serious multi pitch high mountain route. It is possible to climb in the sun on long friendly routes or hang out in the shade on steeper more demanding climbs. There are many fantastic hotels to stay in Cogne and it is a really special place. On the outside the buildings have maintained their rustic charm but inside they offer unsurpassed comfort.
