Ice Report
Updated: 3/28/2010 10:36:09 AM WARNING - Please read: Ice climbing is truly a dangerous activity. Care and judgment born out of experience are imperative. Weather and ice conditions change hourly and what may appear to be "good conditions" to one climber may not be so to another. Please remember that just because a conditions report says that a particular climb is "in", each individual is ultimately responsible for making his/her own climbing decisions. GENERAL SCENE CLIMBS/AREAS Last Ice Report! There still is ice in a few places and the weekend was cold so it has actually been good climbing. Both the North face of Gothics and the Trap Dyke are in good shape. Things will change as temperatures will get warm again this week... CHAPEL POND REGION Pretty much done this coming week... CASCADE PASS REGION Done NORTH SIDE OF PITCHOFF As usual this is the last place to hold out in March. Still getting climbed and actually pretty good in places but not for long... Little Cottonwood Canyon

"Are you are crazy"? is the first response I hear from family and friends when they discover that I have been ice climbing. But to me it would be insane to waste a beautiful winter day sitting on the couch, watching football, eating chips and drinking beer ..... Now that would be crazy! Apart from the fact that it is easy to scare the snot out of yourself, ice climbing has to be one of the most beautiful of the mountaineering disciplines. Everything is always fringed with icicles as a rainbow of color dances through. Ice Climbing is totally addictive and more fun than a tramp on a Saturday night. General Information:
The biggest fear an ice climber has is that their significant other will discover exactly how much money was spent on gear. Ice climbing is a sport that requires some expensive gear, so bring your VISA. You will require plastic boots, crampons, ice axes, ice screws and a weatherproof shell. This is in addition to much of the normal gear carried by a rock climber. Ice climbing takes place below freezing, sometimes well below, so dress accordingly. The ice climbing season in Little Cottonwood Canyon generally runs from mid December through late February. The sport of ice climbing is a challenge to rate because conditions can change by the hour, the day, and certainly by the year. When ice climbing, it is extremely important that you know how to read the ice because your safety depends on it.

Summertime at the Matanuska Glacier is an excellent time to try the vertical world of ice climbing. Our step by step approach ensures professional instruction in the art and technical aspects of ice climbing. You can get started without any prior climbing or trekking experience. You begin on moderate ice slopes and later use your skills to explore the glacier and challenge yourself on more vertical walls. Trips will accommodate different skill levels so bring the whole family. Alaska Ice climbing is a great team building activity. Special group rates for tours, corporate teams, scouts, youth groups and other programs.
"I did the ice climbing...I didn’t expect I could do it, but I had a great day and it was an unbelievable challenge.
It was the most exciting thing I did on my trip in Alaska."

Scaling giant icicles is gaining in popularity, and experts say the Black Hills offers some of the most challenging climbs around with its frozen springs and waterfalls, icy mountainsides and steep cliffs.
Start at Eleventh Hour Gulch in Spearfish Canyon, or nearby Bridal Veil Falls. Two small flows of ice on either side of Bridal Veil offer their own challenges.
A one-hour hike from the trailhead to get to the frozen flows at Crow Peak west of Spearfish is worth the effort, according to those who have tried it. It takes lots of snow and runoff to create a challenging chunk of ice here, so check the conditions before you head out.
Tackling one of the Cathedral spires along the Needles Highway or Sylvan Lake presents its own wintertime challenges. Two highly popular climbs are Honeybear near Sylvan Lake in
