Monday night Olympic history was made. For the first time since Olympic ice dancing debuted in 1976, a pair of dancers from North America won the gold medal. On home ice, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir , who skated with grace and elegance, were clearly above other pairs. The American pair of Meryl Davis and Charlie White Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin captured the bronze.

"Rima, look around you. Where are we?" he asked her. Rima looked all around the deserted skating rink. She looked at all the empty bleachers then looking up at the roof. She wondered how much snow was up there now. This is where humans go to skate, she noted. When she finished tying her skate she said, "Well, I guess it is safe out here then, but are you sure that the ice won't crack?" "Come on, Rima," Shiki said, taking her hand in his and pulling her gently to her feet. "We're skating whether you like it or not." His firm hand in hers, he helped steady her. Rima felt a little off balance as she walked to the ice-stating rink. Rima kept stumbling as she walked out onto the ice. And each time she fell into Shiki's arms, he held her for a moment and then helped to steady herself once more. "Shiki, let's face it, I'm no good at this. I may be a model but I don't have any balance at all. I can't skate or dance," she said after falling down on the ice for the tenth time.

Ice dancing 101: What is the short dance and free dance?
ice-dance.com to the rescue! Not familiar with the site? It's my "go to" site for anything and everything ice dance. In addition to hosting the official websites of many of the ice dance teams out there, the site offers in-depth coverage and analysis of the major ice dance competitions (including great photography), has a partner search page, a discussion board, a section for ISU announcements, and so much more. So when I had my myriad of questions regarding ice dancing, I turned to Daphne Backman, Editor-in-Chief, and Melanie Hoyt, Writer and Editor, of ice-dance.com for enlightenment. Question: Ice dance used to have three parts the compulsory, original and free dance. Now starting this season there are only two the short dance and the free dance. Why did the ISU change the rule? ice-dance.com:

Nine ice dance teams skated to a variety of music, a sometimes befuddling mash-up of themes and rhythms, and when it was all done, only 0.01 separated the top two teams. Third and fourth places are only 0.24 apart. Let's go to the protocols to see what the numbers tell us. Unlike the ISU Junior Grand Prix events, everyone received credit for both sections of their "compulsory" dance. The value of the second portion of the Golden Waltz is higher than the first. The first section is worth 2.5 for level 1, 4.0 for level 2, 5.0 for level 3, and 6.0 for level 4. The second sections levels are 3.5/6.0/7.0/8.0.

Skating with the Stars schlockathon than the Olympic Games. When the bodies were cleared from the ice, though, the leaders entering tonight's free dance were the medalists from last year's world championships Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov of Russia in first, Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto of the United States in second and Elena Grushina and Rusian Goncharov of Ukraine in third.
Slimmest of margins
The margins are razor-thin, however. Navka and Kostomarov, who train in New Jersey, have 99.27 points to 97.89 for Belbin and Agosto and 96.68 for Grushina and Goncharov, who train in suburban Connecticut. Four other teams, including Fusar Poli and Margaglio, are within 10 points of the lead. "Everyone will go home tonight, have a good sleep and realize that the competition is not over," Belbin said. "Tonight is a testament to the fact that ice dance is really unpredictable."
