Jai-Alai (IPA: [ha? ala?] in English and [ha? ? la?] in Basque) means "Merry Festival" in the Basque language. The term is used to denote a fronton (or open-walled arena) used to play a variety of Pelota called Cesta Punta, and, more broadly, to the game itself. The ball is placed into play and volleyed by players wearing a wicker cesta basket with a glove approximately 63 to 70 cm long. The game is characterized by the fast pace of play, the Basque Government promotes it as "the fastest game on Earth", a 125g-140g ball covered with goat-skin can travel up to 302 km/h (Jos© Ram³n Areitio at the Newport Jai Alai, Rhode Island, USA on 3 August 1979) The xistera. The basket-glove (xistera in Basque, cesta-punta in Spanish) was introduced by Gantchiqui Dithurbide from Saint-P©e, France in 1860, and its long version by Melchior Curuchage, from Buenos Aires in 1888.
Rules and Play
The court (or cancha) for Jai-Alai consists of 3 walls (front, back, and left), and the floor between them in play. If the ball touches the floor outside these walls, it is considered out of bounds. Similarly, there is also a border on the lower 3ft of the front wall that is also out of bounds. The ceiling on the court is usually very high, so the ball has a more predictable path. The court is divided by 14 parallel lines going horizontally across the court, with line 1 closest to the front wall and line 14 the back wall. When serving, the server must bounce the ball behind the serving line, then with the cesta "basket" hurl it towards the front wall so it bounces between lines 4 and 7 off the front wall, the ball is then in play.

The game is called pelota vasca in Spain but the Western Hemisphere name of Jai-alai , which is Basque for "merry festival", was given when it was introduced in Cuba. This was due to the fact that this game was played at festivals or fiestas in Spain's Pyrenees Mountains for hundreds of years. The game was then played in the open air with the walls of churches being used to bounce the ball on. Jai-alai is characterized by its fast playing pace, in which a 125g ball (or pelota) covered with parchment skin can travel faster than 180 mph. The ball is volleyed by players wearing a wicker basket glove approximately 63 to 70 cm long. The glove, called cesta-punta in Spanish and xistera in Basque, was invented by the French Basque Gantchiqui Diturbide (also Gantxiki Iturbide) in the 19th century. The game of Jai-alai is popular in countries like Spain and Mexico where, in some regions, the game is played in almost every town and city. Jai-alai also spread out to such countries as mainland Brazil, the Philippines, Italy, Indonesia, China and Egypt.

  • In jai alai you hit a hard ball against the front wall. The game is played in singles or doubles. When you and your partner win a math it counts as one point. The ball is thrown against the front wall very hard and fast with a curved wicker basket. The object of the game is to keep the opposing player from returning the ball. A catch and throw must be one continuous motion. The player can continue to serve and accrue points if the opponent misses the ball. The serve and the return must hit the front wall. The other side gets to serve if the server puts the ball in foul territory.

16. 1960s Handbook - Jai Alai - Mad Men - AMC
For a brief moment in the '60s jai alai the fastest, most dangerous game in the world looked as though it might become the next great sport; and Patxi the next great athlete.

Mad Men ...
1960s Handbook - Jai Alai
The '60s were the Golden Age for jai alai. Time magazine hailed its "bursts of breathtaking action" while celebrities like Johnny Unitas and Buddy Hackett gave the sport a certain (temporal) luster. Staged on a 176-foot court called a fronton, the game pits two players equipped with oversized basket-like gloves against each other for a supercharged game of handball. Catching and flinging the ball (a pelota) against the far wall, a player scores points by getting his opponent to drop the ball on the rebound, or by literally knocking him out. Indeed, jai alai Basque for "merry festival" can be decidedly un-merry on a bad point. The hard-as-a-rock pelota travels as fast as 180 miles per hour and can easily crush a player's skull or knock out a few teeth. Said Buddy Berenson, son of Richard Berenson who promoted the sport as a gambling alternative, "Whenever a player is hit, the others rush up trying to laugh it off and praying for the sight of blood," ...and a pulse. At its peak, jai alai brought in one million dollars a day in bets, with top players like Paxti (aka Francisco Churruca) earning $20,000 a year. But since its principle draw was the option to gamble, the sport soon ceded ground to casinos and state lotteries. After Spanish players (pretty much the only ones participating) went on strike in 1988, jai alai's fate was sealed. Today, Miami and Dania Beach in Florida remain the only cities with full-time open frontons in the United States. As for Patxi, he retired in 1983, stating afterwards that "I knew it was time to quit when my eyes were quicker than my legs." An appropriate anecdote for a sport with a reality that never quite caught up to its hype.

A jai-alai book currently in print. Includes several years of data from Milford jai-alai and excerpts from the book.

Calculated Bets: Computers, Gambling, and Mathematical Modeling to Win!
This is a book about a gambling system that works. It tells the story of how the author used computer simulation and mathematical modeling techniques to predict the outcome of jai-alai matches and bet on them successfully increasing his initial stake by over 500% in one year! His method can work for anyone: at the end of the book he tells the best way to watch jai-alai, and how to bet on it. With humor and enthusiasm, Skiena details a life-long fascination with the computer prediction of sporting events. Along the way, he discusses other gambling systems, both successful and unsuccessful, for such games as lotto, roulette, blackjack, and the stock market. Indeed, he shows how his jai-alai system functions just like a miniature stock trading system. Do you want to learn about program trading systems, the future of Internet gambling, and the real reason brokerage houses don't offer mutual funds that invest at racetracks and frontons? How mathematical models are used in political polling? The difference between correlation and causation? If you are curious about gambling and mathematics, odds are this is the book for you! Quick Takes No matter how good a hitter is, he wont connect every time. In 1930, Babe Ruth was the first MLB player to strike out 1,000 times in his career. In 1966, Mickey Mantle became the first to do it 1,500 times. In 1983, Reggie Jackson became the first to fan 2,000 times. All their strikeouts included, what an outfield that trio would have made! Bud Grant and Marv Levy have a few things in common. Both coached in the Canadian Football Leagues Grey Cup championship game and the NFL Super Bowl, Grant with Winnipeg and Minnesota respectively, and Levy with Montreal and Buffalo respectively. Both had winning records in Grey Cups. Both were 0-4 in Super Bowls. Both were great coaches. Thats using your head. Saturday night, Bernard Hopkins (48-4-1, 32 KOs) landed his biggest blow when he opened a huge gash over Winky Wright's left eye with a head-butt in the third round. Hopkins spent the night picking at it while Wright (51-4-1) scrambled and counter-punched, his face showing frustration and fatigue as the fight slipped away. The head-butt was a major factor in the fight's result. I feel Wright can beat Hopkins now. Several Giants players, stud Michael Strahan included, have been singling Eli Manning out this off-season, calling for him to finally break out. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen. It has become apparent that it's now or never for Eli Manning in New York. My feeling; he doesnt have near the talent of his father or his brother, and it will evidence itself again this season.
