Welcome to The Pennsylvania
Jousting Club
In early 1999 a handful of Pennsylvania residents decided that there was a need for a
Pennsylvania State Jousting Club. It was decided that the best way to accomplish this
was to hold a Pennsylvania State Jousting Championship. In September 1999 the first
Pennsylvania State Jousting Championship was held at Wizard's Knoll Farm, the home
of Jean and Dale Donhauser. The tournament was an unbridled success and Mrs. Peggy
Hoffman, the Maid of Dragon's Lair, was crowned the first Pennsylvania State
Champion. Pleased with the turnout of riders and the success of the tournament an
informal meeting was held following the tournament where it was decided that the PJC
would be founded with the nomination and acceptance of the following officers: In 1999 our first officers were: President: Jean Donhauser- The Maid Of Wizard's Knoll Vice President: Peggy Hoffman- The Maid of Dragon's Lair Treasurer: Pam Richardson- The Maid of Black Rock Secretary: Gloria Hammerstein- The Maid of Bay Glen Statistician: Bruce Hoffman - The Knight of Maple Hill For our current Officers, Schedule, and other information please check the links

This year the Longs Peak Scottish/Irish Highland Festival has added new excitment to the jousting venue with heavy armor competition. Heavy armor jousting was prominent in periods of the 15th and 16th century. The purpose of the competition is for each competitor to try to dislodge the opponent from his/her horse. Where as in light armor jousting the purpose of this competition is for the comptetior to strike his opponet shield at a designated spot. This jousting was popular in the 12th and 13th century. Both jousting events are dangerous and only for the bravest of competitors.

These games, requiring great skill, were referred to generically as hastiludes Though the first recorded tournament was staged in 1066, jousting itself did not gain in widespread popularity until the 12th century. citation needed It maintained its status as a popular European sport until the early 17th century. Jousting was added to tournaments several centuries after their inauguration. The joust permitted a better display of individual skill and, although dangerous, offered large sums of prize money. Many knights made their fortune in these events, whilst many lost their fortune or even life. For example, Henry II of France died when his opponent's lance went through his visor and shattered into fragments, blinding his right eye and penetrating his right

The riders' helmets are closed, and they raise 12-foot lances. Rope strung between posts separates their lanes, or the lists. At a signal the horses charge . Their heavy hooves pound grass. The knights keep the lances raised until the last second, cradled on their outside arms. Just as they meet they lower the lances to the horizontal, across their bodies, aiming for the opponent.
On the first pass one nicks the other, earning a point. On the second pass the other makes a solid enough contact to shatter the balsa wood end-section of the lance, scoring again. On the third pass he plants his lance solidly in the target and feels his opponent slip off his mount. An unhorsing. The crowd goes wild. Witness this year's competition and experience the extreme sport of Jousting. This year's competitors are:
Charlie Andrews

A Knight cannot shine in war if he has not prepared for it in tournaments...
Full contact jousting
I n our beginning...
Bearing in mind that the sport with all of its experts and their experience had passed on some 400 years earlier, we began with only a few horses paired with a strong desire to engage in an ancient and time-honored tradition. It was time that the spectacle of full contact jousting was reborn.
Reviving jousting from scratch left a great deal to experimentation. This process was an evolutionary one, as none of the original participants were still around to ask for advice or assistance. All that remained were some texts left by those who scribed for the sport. Practical experience really needed to be gained, and there is only one way to get that...
Since our inception, and in the more than two decades of our existence, The New Riders of the Golden Age has been established as the premier jousting troupe in the country. Each year we perform from coast to coast for millions of people at Renaissance faires, state and county fairs, and special events. As performers in a show, we follow a script. The nature of the situation and its variables requires that we be open to improvisation. This allows us to keep the show fresh and alive for the audience as well as ourselves. The script sets the pace and gives a foundation to the excitement already existing from our energy.
