Maryland Jousting Tournament
Association

On March 5, 1950, the first meeting of the Maryland State Tournament Association was held in Overlea, Maryland. Since only four people were at this meeting, it was decided that another meeting should be arranged before abandoning all hope of creating a successful organization.

The four people that were at the first meeting were Mary Lou Bartram, George Bartram, Henry Fowler, and Raymond Owen. The second meeting was held at the same locality on March 26, 1950, and 22 riders were present. It was at this meeting that the association was officially organized, and officers elected. The first President was George Bartram, the Vice President, Charles Brady and Secretary/ Treasurer, Mary Lou Bartram. The membership fee of $1.00 was established, and the purposes of the organization defined. It was here too that a standard set of riding rules was first written and approved unanimously by all those present as the proper rules by which jousting tournaments should be conducted. These rules are reviewed each spring, and changes, if approved, are incorporated in the rules. The official name of the organization, at that time, was the Maryland Tournament Association, although it was later named the Maryland Jousting Association, and as of March 1951 it became known as the Maryland Jousting Tournament Association, Inc.

Jousting tournaments have been held in Maryland since early colonial times but became increasingly popular after the Civil War. Retaining the pageantry and customs of medieval tournaments, modern competitors are called "knights" or "maids", and many dress in colorful costumes. Men, women and children compete equally with skill and horsemanship determining the class. Tournaments conducted in Maryland are "ring tournaments" which involve charging a horse at full-gallop through an 80-yard course toward suspended rings. Using a long, fine-tipped lance, the rider has 8 seconds to complete the course and "spear" the rings, scoring points accordingly. From three equally-spaced arches, rings are hung 6 feet 9 inches above the ground and range in diameter from one-quarter inch to nearly two inches depending upon the skill-level of the contestant. A family sport, jousting skills frequently are passed from one generation to the next.

    Rebuilding New Orleans
We at Paragon Jousting have long believed that simply getting on a horse and breaking lances on people does not make one a knight. What we do in the days and weeks in between is far more important. As such, we try to do the right thing and help those in need when we can. In March of 2011 the Paragon Jousting team will travel to New Orleans to spend time volunteering for Habitat for Humanity , building new homes for the people of the city. In the Spring of 2010, Scott and Becca spent a week working for Habitat in New Orleans , and they were amazed to see how much work there still is to be done, 5 years after Hurricane Katrina. The people of New Orleans are strong and proud, struggling to rebuild after a series of catastrophes with very little outside help. The city is a special place, and its citizens are nothing short of inspiring. They deserve better than what they have received. We at Paragon Jousting cannot change the world, but we can try to bring a little hope, and a little help to people who need it.

he sport of jousting. It might surprise many Kiwis to know that the sport of Jousting has been running here in New Zealand since the early 1980s. Jousting is regulated internationally by two main bodies – the Euro Jousting League (EJL) primarily within greater Europe and the International Jousting Association (IJA) both in Europe and the rest of the world. The IJA provides a global structure for training and grading which our members are able to work their way through. The Company of the Lance (C.O.T.L) is an IJA group that was formed in Auckland in 2004. The group’s two main focuses are Contact Jousting and “Skill-at-Arms”. Skill-at-Arms encompasses a large number of mounted games and exercises that were originally designed to prepare a rider for the medieval pursuits of hunting, tournament and battle. These games include exercises such as Rings (threading rings with a sword or spear), Tent-Pegging, Tilting the quintain (hitting a spinning target) and cutting, throwing and firing various weapons from horseback – essentially pony-club games for grown-ups with a lot more skill involved. When riders reach competition level, all of these exercises are done at the canter and often include obstacles such as jumps etc.
Contact Jousting is a modern equestrian competitive sport that also has a mass public appeal. It is a revival of traditional Medieval Jousting (as popularised in the film “A Knight’s Tale” starring Heath Ledger). The objective of our style of jousting is to hit your opponent’s shield with a lance while he or she is trying to do the same to you. Points are awarded on how well you strike your opponent with maximum points being awarded for shattering your lance. This style of joust, known as the joust of peace became common from the 14th century onwards.

    The Clash of Armour
J ousting is the most spectacular and potentially the most dangerous activity that we engage in. Jousting is a specialist activity where two armoured riders engage each other at speed with lances. This tests a rider's horsemanship, lance skills and courage under the real pressure of a modern, full contact, competition. Unlike other martial sports there is no defensive aspect - you are going to get hit. Points are awarded on how well you strike your opponent with maximum points being awarded for shattering your lance. This style of joust, known as the joust of peace became common from the 14th century onwards. We also use real armour because a solid hit to an unprotected person even in this style of joust will deliver more than enough force to kill. Whilst historically the head and torso were considered to be legitimate targets with a strike to the head being regarded as being the most difficult, the objective of our style of jousting is to shatter a lance on the torso of the opponent while he or she is trying to do the same to you. We also do not try to dismount the opposing rider because this will lead to real injuries - either to the horse or to the rider. However our hits are hard enough to cause unplanned dismounts and these do happen especially during competitions. But we award no additional points for this. Most of our injuries are the result of unplanned dismounts.

    37. Medieval Knight Jousting
jousting is a form of competition that we still partake in today! It has lasted hundreds of years.
    http://www.knight-medieval.com/medieval-knights-jousting.htm
    Medieval Knight Jousting
What is jousting? it is a tradition that comes out of the middle ages where two knights mounted on horses and armed with lances charged at each other. The goal was to knock the other knight off his horse. This was often done in tournaments for knights to practice their skills, show off their abilities and to establish their rank within the community. Where did jousting come from? Originally, in the early centuries of knighthood knights would often fight vicious battles against each other to establish supremacy and find out who the better knight was. But over the centuries this practice was eliminated because it served no good purpose for knights of the same kingdom to wound, maim or kill each other. A knight killed this way was one less knight that could fight for the kingdom. So jousting came into prominence because it was much safer. Knights could still battle and establish their stature while not usually harming each other. What did they use to joust with? The traditional weapon for jousting was the lance. This is because the lance was actually one of the most effective weapons that a knight had. It was a long weapon, sometimes as long as twelve feet. And it was used by a knight on horseback to charge through enemy formations of soldiers. the length of it allowed the knight to attack the enemy while still remaining a distance away from their weapons. Because it was so important a weapon it was very highly regarded and knights were always ready to show off their skills with it.

We specialise in recreating aspects of the medieval tournament along with related Living History activities from the second half of the 14th century (1350 - 1400 AD). The group has been one of the pioneers in rediscovering the art of jousting and its development as a modern sport both in New Zealand and around the world. All our training is done under the guidelines of the International Jousting Association that promotes horse welfare, jousting and international competition. These Knights (actually stunt riders and actors) are regular performers at more than a dozen "Renaissance Villages" around the country and will be battling at the Arizona Renaissance Festival on a tournament field within the Festival park in the foothills of the Superstition Mountains just east of Apache Junction, Arizona.

    The history of jousting
Jousting now, as 400 years ago, is a merrie sport; a make-believe pageant of Sir Galahads and Sir Lancelots, of villainous Black Knights versus the virtuous Red Knights, mounted on thundering steeds, plumes waving, chain mail clanking and the festival crowd sarcastically screaming "Cheat to win!!"
