41. Avalon
The jousting tournament to decide who is the most fearless knight can begin. Well armoured, the fighters enter the arena.
http://www.clanfork.co.uk/Trev/A/Avalon.htm
A tournament game
Publisher's Description:
Fanfares sound. The ground vibrates under horses hooves. The jousting tournament to decide who is the most fearless knight can begin. Well armoured, the fighters enter the arena. Who will be the last to still have a complete set of weaponry, and therefore able to decide the tournament for himself? And who will be in possession of the most gold at the end of the fighting, and be the real victor of the jousting?
Box info:
Designer : Marco Silles Published : 1978 Publisher : Fun Connection Players : 3 to 6 Ages : 8+ Playing time : 45 min
Trev says:
Players collect and trade weapons and armour for use in jousts during the tournament, the aim being to make the most money during the fighting, whether or not you win the fights. The pieces are attractive enough. The weakest part of this game is that it has been designed such that ties are common during jousts. The ties are resolved by what the designer obviously thought was a good idea (a large part of the rules is given over it), but essentially boils down to a form of Snap! The rest of the game could be promising, but I'll need to try it a few more times to see how play develops.

Jousting
From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Journey to the West) Next (Joy Adamson) Renaissance Fair jousting in Livermore California, 2006. Jousting is a sport consisting of martial competition, usually between two mounted knights or other horsemen, using a variety of weapons, especially lances. Jousts could also involve contests on foot with battle axes, swords, and maces or other weapons. Another form of jousting is tilting at the rings, in which the galloping rider attempts to insert his lance through small metal or wooden rings. Jousting is thought to have originated as an informal friendly contest between knights and was later included as a prelude to the main melee event at medieval tournaments. The first recorded tournament was staged in 1066. However, organized jousting did not gain in widespread popularity until the thirteenth century. The joust permitted a display of individual skill and often offered large sums of prize money. In England , jousting was the highlight of the Accession Day tilts of King Henry VIII Elizabeth I and James I , and was also part of the festivities at the marriage of Charles I . Many knights made their fortune in these events, while others lost their wealth or even their lives. Most famous of these deaths resulted when a shard of an opponent's broken lance went through the visor and into the eye of Henry II of France in 1559.

PEEP JOUSTING - Part One: Tournament Setup
I've had these Peeps for about three years. Every year I plan to do something with them, but never do. Until now. Who cares if they're stale and more sugary cement than marshmallow? I'm not eating them, I'm melting them! For proper Peep Jousting you need a proper arena. Instead, I have my trusty microwave. It's only slightly soiled, and it even has a rotating plate in the middle for better "cooking." It was a wedding present, making it about six and a half years old now. Since this was to be a tournament, and not just torture, I figured each Peep should have its own identity. Being too lazy to give them names, I simply numbered them with a Sharpie. To make things a little more interesting I used both purple and pink Peeps. The Peeps would compete among their own color to be The One True Pink Peep and The One True Purple Peep. These two victors would compete for the title of Ultimate Peep. I wound up with eight pink Peeps and eight purple Peeps. Each side would have four quarter-final matches, two semi-finals and one final. I wondered how well Peeps would stand up to multiple trips to the microwave, fearing victory would be declared not by who struck who first, but by who didn't melt quite so much.

Medieval Knights - Jousting
As the sport of the Medieval Knights, jousting had no rival throughout the Middle Ages, and even down to the end of the 16th Century, he who "justed beste of all" was the finest sportsman. The rules and ceremonies of tournaments were defined by the same rigor as the chivalry itself. They were arranged by heralds according to the strictest ritual, and differed little if at all in different countries. Jousting Scene-15th Century. The Barrier Which Parted The Lists Is Clearly Shown
Beside their armorial bearings, the combatants used many devices in honor of their ladies, or for disguise. To honor a lady, a combatant might wear for example "a red sleeve broidered with pearls", or he might choose to remain unknown and wear arms all of one color as the Black Knight in Ivanhoe. The arms and armor were those used in battle: swords, lances, battle-axes. The earliest tourneys were fought with blunted weapons, but soon, however, the knights found this insufficient, thirsting for a more stringent test of courage, more worthy of the honor of the Medieval Knights. Jousting, and especially the tournaments became very real imitations of war, in which sharp swords and lances were used. If the horse did not swerve, and the lances did not break, and either knight aimed true and held his lance firm, mortal wounds were often given. If both knights were unhurt and kept their seats, they wheeled their horses and charged again with fresh lances, till one or both were unhorsed. Then the victor also dismounted, and the combat was continued on foot with swords.

Knight Life Melissa Snell zSB(3,3) When we think of the knight in shining armor, we almost automatically think of the grand joust. It's hard not to imagine the thunderous hoofbeats and the roar of the crowd as two knights race towards each other in a test of skill and nerve. The joust grew from the chaotic melee of the tournament . As restrictions were put on this dangerous form of combat practice, an event designed to test the horsemanship and weapons skill of the individual knight evolved, and eventually became the focus of the merry spectacle of the tourney. In the joust the knight used the lance, a weapon specifically designed for mounted combat. At first jousters would simply spur their horses towards one another, weapons ready, each attempting to push the other off his horse. Once on the ground, his battle was as good as lost, for the mounted warrior could run him down, trample him, or spear him with his lanceall while out of reach of the land-bound fighter. When the joust came to represent the horsemanship of the fighter, safeguards evolved. The lance was fitted with a three-pronged tip, a
