How to Grapple in Judo Judo applies three major techniques nage-waza (throwing moves), katame-waza (grappling) and atemi-waza (striking). How to Dress for Judo Judo, which translates to "gentle way," is a martial art that involves using leverage and force to disable your opponent. Since judo involves grappling and throwing your opponent to the ground, it's important to dress in a way that allows freedom of movement and to wear durable clothing that can stand up to abuse. How to Teach Judo Since its inception, Judo skills have been passed on from master to student. As in all martial arts, one never stops learning and perfecting skills. History and philosophy
The early history of Judo and that of its founder, Japanese polymath and educator Kano Jigoro (surname first in Japanese ) (1860-1938), are inseparable. Kano was born into a well-to-do Japanese family. His grandfather was a self-made man, a sake brewer from Shiga prefecture in central Japan; however, Kano's father was not the eldest son and did not inherit the business, but instead became a Shinto priest and government official, with enough influence for his son to enter the second incoming class of Tokyo Imperial University Kano was a small, frail boy, who, even in his twenties, did not weigh more than a hundred pounds, and was often picked on by bullies. He first started pursuing jujitsu Keiko Fukuda , who is one of Kano's oldest surviving students. Fukuda is said to have emphasized technique over formal exercise, sowing the seeds of Kano's emphasis of

From the Mat to the Street:
Judo and Life
Richard Hodges
My Judo teacher was always yelling "Relax!" I could
not understand. Was I really so tense that he singled
me out for this admonishment? Didn't he realize that
yelling "Relax!" only made me more tense? In competitive tournaments I often did not do well.
It was embarrassing to be thrown by men weaker than
I, and I often felt that I didn't understand, really,
anything about Judo. I remember one tournament clearly. My opponent was a big brown belt. As he attacked I was afraid he would throw me-and in the same instant I heard my teacher's command "Relax!" echoing like an electric current in my body. I softened; and in slow-motion-time absorbed the attack, then simply threw him to the mat. I ran to my teacher and embraced him. This may have seemed strange to others who knew us. I had won matches before, but this was the very first time I had done so from understanding. I think he knew.

Judo in Iceland
Since the first Judo practises began in 1956, Icelandic Judo players have been developing their skills and getting stronger - year by year. Iceland competed at the Olympics games for the first time in 1976. In 1984, Bjarni Fririksson (6th dan) won a bronze medal - only the second Icelandic person to ever win a medal at the Olympics.
The first Judo club was founded in 1957 and called Judodeild rmanns. Ten years later, the second judo club was founded called Judoflag Reykjavkur. These two clubs influenced the spirit and growth of Judo for the first few years. However, as the years went on - Judo clubs started in different locations in Iceland and today there are 3 large clubs in Iceland, Judodeild rmanns (Reykjavk) - Judoflag Reykjavkur (Reykjavk) and Judodeild KA (Akureyri).
The Icelandic Judo Federation (I.J.F.) was founded on 28th January 1973, and at that time 7 clubs were active in Iceland. The first president of the Icelandic Judo Federation was Eysteinn orvaldsson and with him in the federation there where Jn . ormsson, ttar Halldrsson, Sigurur H. Jhannsson and rhallur Stgsson.
The first Icelandic Judo Championship was held in 1970, 3 years before the formation of the I.J.F. by the Icelandic clubs and the Icelandic Sports Council. At the 1970 Championship, 24 players competed; 12 from Judoflag Reykjavkur, 11 from Judodeild rmanns and 1 player from Vestmannaeyjar. At that tournament, Judoflag Reykjavkur was in first and second place and Judodeild rmanns took third place. Svavar Carlsen took first place and got the title Judo Champion of Iceland and held this title for many years! Svavar was unbeatable and competed for Iceland on the national team.

Judo at Columbia University
Judo has had a presence on the Columbia campus since 1904. We encourage all levels of participation from the recreational player to the competitor. Our mission as a Judo program is to impart to our students not only the physical skills of Judo, but its philosophy and traditions. Many students seek us out for self-defense training, and that is definitely one of the things Judo providesnot just through concrete skills, but through increased confidence and awareness. We try to introduce students to Judo as a lifetime pursuit, a skilled art requiring infinite perfecting. By introducing traditional Judo etiquette and teaching the Japanese names of the techniques we also introduce our members to the sports cultural roots. Our coaches always include philosophical explanations for the traditions and ethics. For many of us, a Judo Dojo is a place of stability and community, where people watch out for you, in and out of the practice hall.

Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking the elbow or by applying a choke. Strikes and thrusts (by hands and feet) - as well as weapons defenses - are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms ( kata) and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice ( randori). Judo is back on campus!
RPI Judo has gotten a fresh start here on campus! Welcome back to Sensei Noriyasu Kudo. Kudo Sensei is an eighth degree black belt (out of 10), originally born in Japan, and former instructor for the Tokyo Police Academy. Kudo Sensei was the first Judo instructor here at RPI and has returned to teach again! We practice Monday and Thursday from 8-10pm upstairs in the Mueller Center. We've been doing well the past couple years, we have many new members (and more girls)! Please feel free to join us, even if you're a beginner!
Some Notes from our President:
About Gis (Uniforms)
You will need a gi to practice Judo. Through the club it will cost $25 for everything you need. If you have a judogi already you can, of course, wear that one. Until you get your gi, please wear clothes without rivets or zippers (long pants preferred). Your clothes will get pulled on so don't wear anything you wouldn't want to have stretched or ripped. Jewelry is also a hazard when rolling around on the mats. We will be putting in a bulk order for gis in the first few weeks of the semester. Etiquette
Since Kudo Sensei is a more traditional Japanese judoka, he is more attached to formalities than other instructors from the states. It would be considered fine to call him "Sensei Kudo" (like Prof. Smith) or "Kudo Sensei" (ordered like in traditional Japanese, preferred) or just "Sensei". Kudo Sensei will expect us to have the mats set up and be most of the way done with, if not done with, our warm-up when he arrives for the 8pm class. If everyone could get there by 7:40pm for now to set up the mats it would help a lot. We should try to start a warm-up before 8pm at the latest.
