The name Kali comes from kāla , which means black, time, death, lord of death, Shiva . Kali means "the black one". Since Shiva is called Kāla - the eternal time, Kālī, his consort, also means "the Time" or "Death" (as in time has come). Hence, Kali is considered the goddess of time and change. Although sometimes presented as dark and violent, her earliest incarnation as a figure of annihilation still has some influence. Various Shakta Hindu cosmologies, as well as Shakta

There is scarcely enough room on my entire web site to identify and explain the long history of presumed and disputed interlinkages between the Saktiite, Saivite, and Tibetan Buddhist goddesses Durga, Kali, Parvati, Umar, Sati, Tara, Kurukulla, Candi, Ambika, et al, so it must suffice to begin by saying that
  • Durga is a very fierce multi-armed warrior-mother-protector goddess who rides on a tiger or a lion;
  • Umar is an ancient Mountain-goddess;
  • Sati is an ancient loving-wife Goddess;
  • Parvati is a loving wife-and-mother goddess allied to Umar and Sat;
  • Kali is depicted as naked, blood-thirsty, and wild-haired; and
  • Kurukulla is a fierce Nepalese and Tibetan goddess much like Kali.

Each of these goddess is seen by some of her devotees as the supreme god-head, by others as a mere battle-born "aspect" of another female supreme god-head (e.g. Durga), and by a third group as the "true form" (or, contrariwise, a "mere aspect") of Parvati or Durga in her/their role as the Saki or Shanti (energy) or consort of the supreme god-head Shiva
KALI
Although records of Kali's worship date back less than 2,000 years, it is widely assumed by scholars that she represents a survival of a Dravidian (pre-Aryan) goddess. Kali is typically shown as a deranged or wrathful half naked woman, and is often depicted dancing upon the corpse of her consort, the god

Kali may be said to represent the darker side of Devi's power. Her emergence is chronicled in the third story of the Devi Mahatmya . Confronted by the insolent remarks of the demon generals, Chanda and Munda, a fiery burst of energy emerges from Devi's forehead and takes the dark skeletal form of goddess Kali. Kali overpowers and beheads two demon generals, Chanda and Munda, and when she carries their heads to Devi she is named Chamunda. She is often portrayed as emaciated, black, and with a necklace of skulls. (The story continues in which Devi, Kali and a group of matrikas, or mothers, destroy the demon brothers Shumbha and Nishumbha. In the final battle against Shumbha, Devi absorbs Kali and the matrikas and stands alone for the final battle.)

Kali Drinks the Blood of Raktabija. Lent by Mr. and Mrs. John Gilmore Ford. During a fierce battle in which the Great Goddess demonstrates her omnipotence by defeating powerful demons who terrify even the gods, she encounters the fierce Raktabija. Every drop of blood he sheds turns into another demon as it touches the earth. A unique strategy has to be devised to contain him. Devi asks Kali to step in and contain the demon. With her huge mouth and enormous tongue she ferociously laps up Raktabija's blood, thus preventing the uprising of further demons. Devi Homepage Text Only

    Mother Goddess Kali www.exoticindia.com zSB(3,3) The love between the Divine Mother and her human children is a unique relationship. Kali, the Dark Mother is one such deity with whom devotees have a very loving and intimate bond, in spite of her fearful appearance. In this relationship, the worshipper becomes a child and Kali assumes the form of the ever-caring mother. "O Mother, even a dullard becomes a poet who meditates upon thee raimented with space, three-eyed, creatrix of the three worlds, whose waist is beautiful with a girdle made of numbers of dead men's arms..." (From a Karpuradistotra hymn, translated from Sanskrit by Sir John Woodroffe)

    Kali Bachao Andolan (Movement to save Kali River)
    The Kali river is one of many rivers that flows in the richly forested area of the Western Ghats. The river is 184 kms. long and flows into the Arabian Sea. Like many rivers in India, the Kali River is no exception it has been abused on the path of ``development''. There are 6 major hydroelectric dams that have submerged over 32,000 acres of the rich forests of Uttara Kannada. A 7th dam has been proposed now it will submerge another 210 hectares of forest area and generate just 18 MW of power. In addition, there is the Dandeli Paper Mills that pollutes the river by releasing its untreated effluents directly into the river. Besides damming and pollution, there is also illegal sand mining on the banks of the river which disturbs the ecology of the river. A number of people of Uttara Kannada want to put an end to this and want to protect the river for posterity. As a result, the Kali Bachao Andolan (Movement to Save the Kali) has been formed by Parisara Samrakshana Kendra of Uttara Kannada along with several local community organizations and tribal villages of Uttara Kannada. This group has been formed to highlight the threats of damming, pollution, and illegal sand mining to the Kali River and to protect it from these threats.

    KALI: 12-STRING GUITAR WITH 2 ADDED SUB-BASSES completed in autumn of 2000
    Kali is an acoustic 14-string guitar, strung essentially like a standard 12-string but with the addition of two sub-bass strings. These added low strings run parallel to the neck on the bass side but are not over the fingerboard and therefore not fretted. They function very much like the sub-bass strings on a harp-guitar, and on Kali add a wonderful, piano-like bass to accompany and compliment the shimmer of the double courses of the main strings. I had already built an 18-string Sympitar ( Zephyr ) for Kali's owner, Marc Dorsa , and Zephyr's size and shape became a basic starting point for Kali's design, although you might not guess that from a casual glance. Marc allowed me a lot of freedom with the aesthetic details of Kali's design, and I had fun with her. Kali's two sub-bass strings attach to a rather unusual elevated peghead extension, and at the bridge end extra large holes and bridge-pins allow for the use of acoustic bass guitar strings. The vibrating length on the sub-basses is about 32", and Marc tunes the lowest one down to the D below the Low E of a bass guitar. The instrument has a rear access door located in the center of the back (as on my Sympitars) to facilitate any work that needs to be done inside the guitar, such as repairs or installation/adjustment of electronics.

        Mother Goddess as Kali - The Feminine Force in Indian Art Article of the Month - August 2000 Printer Friendly Version

        The worship of a mother goddess as the source of life and fertility has prehistoric roots, but the transformation of that deity into a Great goddess of cosmic powers was achieved with the composition of the Devi Mahatmya (Glory of the goddess), a text of the fifth to sixth century, when worship of the female principle took on dramatic new dimensions. The goddess is not only the mysterious source of life, she is the very soil, all-creating and all consuming. Kali makes her 'official' debut in the Devi-Mahatmya, where she is said to have emanated from the brow of Goddess Durga (slayer of demons) during one of the battles between the divine and anti-divine forces. Etymologically Durga's name means "Beyond Reach". She is thus an echo of the woman warrior's fierce virginal autonomy. In this context Kali is considered the 'forceful' form of the great goddess Durga.

    Tantra - The Many Faces of Kali
    THE MANY FACES OF KALI
    by David Nelson Kali is one of the most powerful goddesses of India. Her present identity results from an evolutionary process spanning more than two millennia, and her recent arrival in the West as a living deity creates the possibility of new and unforeseen changes within an environment outside her original cultural boundaries.
    Modern depiction of Kali In her Indian temples, Kali is worshiped daily from predawn until evening darkness. The black goddess is awakened, bathed, fed, adored by her devotees, and prayed to throughout the day and additionally on the night of the dark moon (amavasya). The single most important and elaborate amavasya worship (puja) falls in the lunar month corresponding to October or November in the Western calendar. This Night of Kali occurs near the time of Samhain, the Celtic sabbat when the veil between the worlds is thinnest, and that is fitting, since Kali is, among many things, the goddess of death.
    Written at the end of the nineteenth century, Swami Vivekananda's poem, "Kali the Mother," evokes the Night of Kali as a time of pitchy darkness that blots out the stars, while on every side, "a thousand, thousand shades of Death begrimed and black" scatters plagues and sorrows in a mad, joyful dance. In the poet's awesome vision, Terror is the goddess's name, Death is in her breath, and destruction follows every footfall, for she is the relentless power of all-consuming Time.

    Kali, the Great Mother Goddess of the Hindu tradition, is the Source, the One that gives birth to All. Known as a slayer of demons, She destroys the army of mind-born delusions symbolized by demons that separate us from the Divine as our own true Self. To our bound, limited and contracted ego identities She may strike terror, at times appearing as a coal-black, sword-wielding, blood-smeared dancer of death and destruction. To our Divine Self, She is our supremely beautiful Beloved, our dear spouse, performing a ballet of incomparable grace, overwhelming us with love. Mother of the Universe . Letting your mind step aside for a moment, allow your heart and soul to feast on these two poems: My blissful Mother exists fully through every creature! Meditate, O mind, on the mystery of Kali.
    Use any method of worship you please,
    or be free from methods,

    planted by the teacher in your heart.
