The tidal section is popular for sea kayakers and experienced tourers. One of the few places you can paddle through a capital city directly to the sea in only a few hours.
    edit Non-tidal section
Starting from the Teddington Lock in London the Thames becomes freshwater as it snakes across England. A place many people learn to kayak and canoe. Fairly slow and very flat, absolute beginners can put in and admire Southern England's countryside.
    edit Thames weirs
The Thames has some of the most reliable and active weirs in England which are managed by the Environment Agency . Many weirs have relatively easy access and tolerant lock keepers . The levels are checked by many paddlers and are reported on websites detailed in the external links section below. The guide below specifies the minimum recommended skill level, and the inherent danger at paddling at the location.

Kayaking and Canoeing
admin There isn't a lot of equipment required for kayaking. A kayak and paddle, life jacket, helmet and spray skirt are the recommend basics. Kayaks for surfing and doing tricks are called playboats. Kayaks for rocky rivers are called creek boats. Traditional river kayaks offer a quick ride and stability. Most kayaking beginners start with the traditional river kayak. One kayak does not fit all. The size and shape of the kayak is based on the user's height, weight, and the type of water the kayak will be used in. Kayak dealers usually stock demo or demonstration kayaks available for test boating. This allows kayakers to try before they buy. Used kayaks cost considerably less than new and are a good starting point. Finding the right paddle involves getting the length, weight, material and blade shape into consideration, along with the user's height, torso size and paddling style. Tall people, those with long torsos and paddlers who like a slow ride will require longer paddles. Shorter people or those with short torsos and paddlers who like to paddle fast and get the job done will benefit from shorter paddles. Kayaking paddle materials include wood, fiberglass, carbon fiber and aluminum shafts with plastic blades. The aluminum shaft paddles are a good choice for beginners. Many kayakers are already into other water sports and own a life jacket. Life jackets, also known as personal flotation devices (PFD) are required by law. Choose a PFD rated for the type of kayaking involved. Type III PFD's tend to be the most comfortable for paddling.

  • Kayaking But kayaking is not always as extreme as most of us think it is. Braving the rapids is just one of the various classifications of this outdoor sport. The type described above is referred to as whitewater kayaking. Other forms are less extreme and are intended for recreational purposes. Ocean/sea-type is mainly for traveling on open waters. The surf ski-type, on the other hand, is for racing, wave-breaking, and in some cases, light and speedy rescues. All other types are collectively referred to as general recreational kayaking. Let us get down to some facts as to its origins. The name of the water sport itself helps define what it is all about. As the name suggests, it entails the ability to maneuver and propel a slender-shaped watercraft, called ‘kayak’, across the surface of the water using a paddle. The kayak is generally classified as a subcategory of ‘canoe’ which refers to a generic type of boat that is light and narrow-shaped. In some parts of the world, the term ‘kayak’ is interchangeably identified with canoe. One of the differences that sets the kayak apart from the typical canoe boats is its fundamental design that allows paddlers to sit in the cockpit with their legs stretched and their bodies facing forward. Another unique characteristic is that it is customized according to one’s preferences as well as body size. Kayaking

This river can even be paddled with sea kayaks.
Summer 2006 has arrived in the old Dordogne valley Actual weather forecast at Méteo France Actual water levels in the Dordogne region July 2001, the river has flooded most campsites along the river at the start of July. This flooding came as a complete surprise, on my Dordogne kayak trip 2001 I was looking at a mighty river drowning half the Limeuil campsite. On July 23 2001 the level is dropping but still higher than normal for this time of the year. So the 2001 Dordogne trip is no success. People who want to paddle the Dordogne river should be aware that the river can be dangerous in times of heavy rainfall. So have a spare river in mind when planning a trip on this river. Think about the Mosel, Weser, Fulda or Lahn river in Germany. Short river description: The Dordogne river is a French river going from the Massif Central along Bergerac and Bordeaux to Royan at the Atlantic Ocean. We paddled the 130 km middle part from Beaulieu sûr Dordogne to Limeuil. The entire river can be divided into four parts: the upper river with dams, the middle part where the river descends at at rate of 0.5 m/km through a mountain range, the 1.0 m/km descending part from Limeuil to Bergerac where you find some dams and the part from Bergerac to the ocean where the river flows freely through an agricultural landscape.
