Kayaking and Canoeing
Kayaking and Canoeing are very popular on Hilton Head. It can be very relaxing and fun, nice activity for a family. We like kayaks more than canoes and we also love Palmetto Dunes so when we want to relax on the water and take some nature pictures for our collection, we go to Outfitters, rent a kayak and go.
Kayaking in Palmetto Dunes The scenic Palmetto Dunes lagoon is giving you a chance to connect with nature, observe (and photograph) birds, enjoy the wind. The navigation is very easy, you cannot get lost. So relax and look around...

Kayaking and Canoeing A kayaker on Crescent Lake in the southeast part of
the park. Using a canoe or kayak to travel through Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is a peaceful and rewarding experience. There are numerous lakes and rivers to explore in this way.
Rangers at the park field headquarters (907-781-2218) can help you decide which trip is right for you. Visitors looking for guided kayak adventures can contact one of the kayaking outfitters that operate in the park and preserve.
Most access to the park is by plane, which creates packing challenges for kayakers and canoers. A full-size boat, people, and gear won't fit in a smaller plane. Ask the air taxi you plan to use whether they can accommodate your trip. Inflatable canoes and kayaks or foldable kayaks are good choices for small aircraft.
The rivers in Lake Clark are more suitable for use with a kayak than a canoe. See the rafting page to get further details on the class of whitewater for some rivers.
Please keep your safety in mind. A calm lake can quickly become rough. Keep an eye on the weather. Small waves in the morning and early afternoon came become large waves and white caps in just an hour or two. The frigid water and windy, wet weather are unforgiving.

**Updated 07-16-2008** On the morning of May 15, 2004 Gene passed away peacefully at his home in Inverness, FL. He will be missed by all of us who've had the opportunity to know him. A memorial service was held on Sunday, June 6th at the Ketter home following the annual Jensen Handicap canoe race at River Park in Brooklyn Park, MN. See - United State Canoe Association Article See the Memorial Service link for pictures from the service. This site is dedicated to one of the legends of the canoeing industry. Gene Jensen’s contributions have made an impact on every facet of modern canoeing and his lifelong commitment to improving the sport will live on forever. The purpose of this site is not only to provide information on the many contributions Gene has made to the sport of canoeing but also ensure that his legend will continue. Feel free to look around at the entire site and you too will grow in your appreciation for all that this he’s done to benefit the industry. “He didn’t invent marathon canoe racing, but by 1980, he was certainly a racing legend, and he was the foremost designer of racing hulls. His name was Eugene Jensen, and his Jensen-designed canoes have dominated both professional and recreational marathon racing for years.” – Canoe Journal 1997

Texas River Kayaking and Canoeing Steams and rivers meander through 191,000 miles of Texas landscape. These vastly important aquatic ecosystems play a major role in protecting water quality, preventing erosion, and providing nutrients and habitat for fish and wildlife. Along the way, water that eventually flows into seven major estuaries, supports over 212 reservoirs, countless riparian habitats, wetlands, and terrestrial areas. Bottom line, there are lots of places to river kayak and enjoy the water, scenery, and camaraderie. Kayak fishing is growing leaps and bounds and Texas rivers have some fish just waiting for you, so give it a try.

Most of the Assabet River is classified as flatwater / quietwater. There are some Class I / II rapids in Maynard that can provide a challenge for beginner whitewater boaters. Put-ins are located throughout the watershed. Check out OAR's Assabet River Pocket Guides for the best ways to safely navigate the river. Assabet River Pocket Guides available You can pick up a copy of OAR's popular recreation guide to the Assabet River at local libraries, town halls, EMS stores, The Warehouse Store in Maynard, Concord-Acton Squash Club, the Thoreau Club and the OAR office. This project was the happy result of a collaboration among OAR, the City of Marlborough, and the Towns of Hudson, Northborough, and Westborough. The project was funded by Intel Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Riverways Program, and Crossroads Community Foundation. Some of the best trips on the river include: Paddling the headwaters at Assabet Reservoir in Westborough.
There is a boat ramp and easy access to the reservoir. Plentiful fish and wildlife - especially in the Spring. Warning: the reservoir has many submerged trees which could ruin a good day on the water. Travel slowly.
