Florida has over 8,000 miles of coastline and 4,500 square miles of inland waterways, making it a paradise for boaters! From mega-yachts to wooden skiffs, having a boat is as normal as having a car for some Floridians. Also known as "the ditch," the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is a natural but dredged channel that extends 500 miles down the east coast of Florida to the tip of the Keys. It's a very popular boating route that runs through rivers, creeks and dredged canals. It is maintained by the Florida Inland Navigation District
The 135-mile Okeechobee Waterway, which cuts through the state, is another popular boating route, especially during the summer. It runs along the St. Lucie Canal from Stuart, across Lake Okeechobee and then on to Sanibel Island via the Caloosahatchee River.

Probably the single best single kayak/canoe adventure in Savannah is the run across the Back River from Tybee to Little Tybee Island, an undeveloped State Heritage Site that despite its name is actually twice as big as Tybee, albeit mostly marsh. Many kayakers opt to camp on the island. You can even follow the shoreline out into the Atlantic, but be aware that wave action can get intense offshore. Begin the paddle at the public boat ramp on the Back River. To get there, take Butler all the way to 18th Street and take a right, then another quick right onto Chatham Avenue. The parking lot for the landing is a short way up Chatham on your left. (Warning: Do not attempt to swim to Little Tybee no matter how strong a swimmer you think you are—the currents are exceptionally vicious. Also, do not be tempted to walk far out onto the Back River beach at low tide. The tide comes in very quickly and often strands people on the sandbar.) By paddling west up the Back River and turning right into the first tidal creek, you find yourself taking a relaxing jaunt down Chimney Creek. You can even put in at

Kayaking and Canoeing in the Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte Area
There is still plenty of "old Florida" in and around Charlotte County, and a kayak or canoe offers a great way to explore. Charlotte Harbor is the perfect venue for one of the nations' fastest growing water sports, kayaking and canoeing. The sheltered nature of the harbor along with the countless small islands, creeks, bays and coves provide the enthusiast with over 200 miles of prime waterways perfectly suited for kayaking and canoeing. On the last weekend in March the Charlotte Harbor Kayak and Wildlife Festival is held at the Port Charlotte Beach Complex. The Festival offers a whole range of events including a fishing tournament, guided tours of the Harbor, an outdoor expo and kayak races from 2.5 to 9 miles in length. To help the kayaker get to know the area, the Charlotte County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Recourses Department publishes The Blueway Trails brochure which identifies 53 trails rated for difficulty, scenic value and accessibility. This guide divides the estuary into four sections: Charlotte Harbor section, Coastal section, Peace River section and the Myakka River section. Not as well known and certainly wilder are the unmarked passageways through the dense mangrove preserve that borders the majority of the east and west walls of the harbor. Often only 10 feet or less in width they meander for miles through an environment resembling a tropical jungle with many species of birds, fish and shell mounds. With all these wonderful assets, the waters of the Peace and Myakka Rivers and Charlotte Harbor are truly paradise for the kayaker and canoeist.

Personal flotation devices are required in most parks today. zSB(3,3) Learning kayaking and canoeing safety is an essential component of learning how to paddle. Too many people decide to kayak or canoe with little more water safety knowledge than knowing how to swim. There is so much more with regard to kayaking and canoeing safety than merely knowing how to tread water. It is rather easy for harmless situations to turn quite treacherous in little to no time at all when enjoying watersports. It would therefore behoove us all to know good swim technique, first aid, how to save a drowning person, and how to recognize and treat hypothermia. We also need to ensure we have and wear the proper equipment.
    Be a Good Swimmer
    Know First Aid
Know How to Rescue a Drowning Person
In addition to knowing how to prevent yourself from drowning, it is also crucial that you know how to rescue a drowning person. You may be canoeing or kayaking with someone who is not as good at swimming as you are. Or you may just come across a stranger that needs your help. If you paddle enough, chances are you will be in a situation where you will need to rescue someone from the water.
