Korfball
Korfball is a team ball game, similar in many ways to mixed netball. It is played in over fifty countries. The countries with the most players are the Netherlands and Belgium. Korfball differs from other team sports in that it is a mixed-gender game: a team consists of four men and four women.
How to play
Korfball is played either indoors or outdoors on a court divided into two halves called zones. In each zone there is a post (3.5m, shorter for the young) with a basket at the top. This is positioned at two thirds of the distance between the centre line and the back of the zone. The ball is similar to the one used for association football. There are two teams, each consisting of eight players: two men and two women of each team in each zone (attack and defense). Players score by throwing the ball through the other team's basket. After two goals the teams change zones: the defenders become attackers and attackers defenders. At half-time the teams swap halves of the court.
Philosophy of korfball
Korfball is a team sport. Individual class is essential but there is no room for individual play. Belonging to a team means teamwork; running with the ball or dribbling is not allowed. A player who receives the ball while running must stop within two steps and pass the ball to another player.

Last updated: 24 August 2006 Welsh international player Sian Hunt tells us more about a sport featuring mixed teams of all ages and abilities.
What is korfball?
Everyone either attacks or defends and after every two goals scored you swap ends which means all players get a chance to do everything including shooting, rebounding, setting up goals and defending. The aim of the game is to get the ball into the post without being defended, so you need to create enough room between yourself and your defender in order to score. A full-length game is 60 minutes with a half-time break.
Where can I play?

About Korfball Canterbury
Since it’s reintroduction to New Zealand in 1996 by Christchurch based Rob Smith, korfball has been based mainly in Canterbury under the umbrella of Korfball New Zealand (KNZ). With the welcome establishment of Auckland and Wellington as new regions in 2004, the original KNZ constitution was rewritten to reflect the new national structure and make KNZ a truly national representative body. At the same time as the changes to KNZ, Korfball Canterbury was formed to continue the local activities undertaken in Canterbury by KNZ over the previous eight years. Korfball Canterbury was officially incorporated on 2 December 2004. Korfball Canterbury is run by a voluntary committee of current and past players. The committee members of Korfball Canterbury all love their sport and they aim to:
  • promote and develop the game of korfball. administer tournaments and competitions between teams playing korfball. introduce korfball into schools, other learning institutions, community groups and wherever else possible. encourage and facilitate the establishment of clubs and branch societies whose aim is to play and promote korfball.

Korfball
Korfball is a game comparable to netball and basketball, invented in 1901 by an Amsterdam schoolmaster, Nico Broekhuysen (source: Encyclopedia Brittanica). First demonstrated in Holland in 1902. Action consists almost entirely of passing from hand to hand. Passing and movement forms the basis of the game with attackers using changes of speed and direction, combined with team tactics to try to lose their defenders in order to create a shooting chance.
