What is koryu bujutsu
Koryu literally means "old flow" and is used in Japanese to refer to old styles, schools, or traditions (not necessarily only in the martial arts). The simplest English translation of this term is "classical." Bujutsu is one of several Japanese terms meaning martial arts or techniques (I won't get into the whole jutsu/do issue here; there are differences between "do" arts and "jutsu" arts but they are not as large as many people imagine, in my opinion). So, putting the two together, you get "classical martial arts" (of Japan). This leads to the next question: What precisely is a Japanese classical martial art? Unfortunately, it is impossible to provide a precise definition. Some folks use the date of 1876, when the act prohibiting the wearing of swords (Haitorei) was promulgated, as a dividing line between classical and modern martial arts. Others prefer to use the term "koryu bujutsu" only for those arts developed for actual use on the battlefield and thus reserve the term for sixteenth century and earlier traditions. Classical traditions (however you date them) do have several defining characteristics. They were developed by and for the

The classes included impacting pads using knees, elbows, fists, open hands and the feet. Members then paired up using two people self defence drills covering attacks from grabbing, choking, joint locks, head butts and strikes from all angles. The last thirty minutes were spent working on modern SAQ fitness drills plus static stretches introduced by fitness instructor and club coach Seamus Brady to run alongside and compliment the traditional art within the club. The new equipment is HSE funded due the club training been recognised as very positive towards building health, fitness and wellbeing within the local community for all ages.
Saturday was open to all IRKRS members who travelled from around Ireland to the course. Four hours were spent on practicing technique to create power, dynamic stretching for mobility and pad impacting using striking and kicking techniques. The club have also recently introduced Bojutsu. This is an ancient traditional practice using wooden staff. Bojutsu is known for building natural upper body strength, forearm and wrist flexibility plus good hand eye coordination. The art is something very different but enjoyable and fulfilling. A great weekend was had by all who attended. Special thanks to Teach Na Ndaoine resource centre for the venue and support. Olaf Kray will be returning at the end of October and November.

What is Kata, and why do we do it? Sensei Ingallina writes: Hanshi McCarthy is recognized as one of the foremost authorities on the civil fighting traditions (Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo Jutsu) of Okinawa. He is one of few foreigners ever to teach karate-do in Japan and has received an 8th Dan Teacher’s License. He is a best selling author with his publication of, “The Bible of Karate: Bubishi.” He has authored, “The Classical Kata of Okinawan Karate”, as well as numerous other books, magazine articles and DVDs. Registration forms for the event are available on our web site This is a fantastic opportunity to extend your knowledge as martial artists, and we would highly encourage everyone to participate. Discover how the [Chinese] pioneers of quanfa developed solo fighting routines [kata] by using the HAPV-Theory [the habitual acts of physical violence] as its contextual premise. Learn the highly functional old-school two-person application practices and discover how their solo representations became linked together to create something greater than the sum total of its individual parts. Without question, these old-school practices represent a pathway through which to improve your understanding of karate.

Leave your shoes at the door and pad up to your room in this pretty Anglo-Japanese guesthouse with incredibly friendly service and newly refurbished rooms full of light colours, subtle florals and fresh linens. Beaming smiles greet you at the door of Koryu, a Victorian terraced guesthouse just five minutes' walk from the centre of town. The Japanese staff are effortlessly efficient and very welcoming, the rooms are immaculately kept and the simple, clutter-free style is a rare relief from Bath's fondness for chintz. Sparkling white duvets contrast with deep red carpets in the excellent-value bedrooms and despite the bright, modern style the rooms still manage to retain the period character of the original house. There's also a subtle Japanese influence throughout with breakfast menus made from handmade paper and quirky photos and prints on the walls. All rooms are en suite and have new bathroom fittings, TV, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. There's also plenty of on- and off-street parking.

I am pretty open to what ryu but would preferably like to take say Yagyu Shinkage Ryu or Niten Ichi Ryu, though i already know no Niten Ichi Ryu school are in the USA. Only in Canada and Japan I believe. I have dreamt of taking a Koryu kenjutsu ryu since I was 7, so its been about 11 years now. Since then I have done ALOT of studying on Japan, Samurai and many martial arts, mainly Kenjutsu. I am currently in Kendo. Please anyone help me. This is my dream. THankyou so much for any of your help and time. I hope to hear from anyone soon.
Sincerely,
Eric Kolmos Kaoru 29th November 2005, 08:43 PM Hi!
I know of three Koryu kenjutsu dojo so far in LA off-hand without checking. Kashima-shinryu, Ono-ha Itto Ryu and Suio Ryu. There is no Shinkage Ryu in LA that I am aware of and there is no Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu(HNIR-full name of it.) anywhere either in LA.
There is one sensei, Sosnowski-sensei, back east who is allowed to run an HNIR(Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu) study group, but last I heard, he was not taking anyone.

What is Koryu Bujutsu, and is Budo Taijutsu Koryu Bujutsu? Ko is a word that means old, and ryu refers to flow or school. Put together, they form the word Koryu, which means "old styles, schools or traditions". Bujutsu is of course arts of war- that is, martial arts introduced soley for the purpose of life and death combat. The term koryu bujutsu refers to martial arts of mainland Japan that originated sometime up to and including the Tokugawa period (1603-1868).
Why have I included this page? Because there is a website, a very good website with a wealth of information, called Koryu Online . I looked through their material, quite impressed, and purchased one of their books. I thought I had found a group of individuals who, in this modern age of sport martial arts and Power Rangers, strive for the same understanding in similar arts.
You can imagine how disappointed and distressed I was when I found this page and what was written near the bottom of this page.
