Classical Martial Arts Training
The classical Japanese martial arts known as 'koryu bujutsu' were developed by and for the bushi, or warrior class of Japan, and have a lineage that runs back through each headmaster to the founder of the tradition. As a general rule of thumb, to be considered koryu, an art should be able to trace its founding to prior to the Meiji Restoration (1868).
Melbourne Koryu Kenkyukai provides classes in two of the classical martial arts of Japan, Tatsumi ryu Hyoho and Toda-ha Buko ryu.
Tatsumi ryu
studies the use of the Japanese sword and includes iai, kenjutsu, sojutsu, yawara, bo, hanbo and naginata.
Pictured is (left) Kato Hiroshi, 22nd Headmaster of Tatsumi ryu and (right) Saito Masaru Sensei, a senior exponent of Tatsumi ryu
Toda Ha Buko ryu naginata-jutsu involves the use of naginata against naginata and also naginata against the sword, the spear, and the chain and sickle.
Please see our classes page for training information
We will also have available a range of koryu books and martial arts supplies available at our online shop under construction.

THE GREAT WORKS OF NAGOYA KORYU
This page was generated with permission of Mr.Masaaki Satoh, the author of the book "Nagoya Koryu dako".
There are three types of Nagoya Koryu. Those are a horsefly(Abu) type, a cicada(Semi) type and a bee(Hachi) type in their configuration. The Nagoya Koryu shows an excellent flight feature in a strong wind such as 5m/s to 15m/s and have a hummer with high pitched sound.
Although the height of the kite usually does not exceed more than 60 cm, the flight stability in the strong wind is very excellent. The building technique is very difficult because it needs a supurior craftmanship and experiences.
Mr.Masaaki Satoh is an outstanding kite builder of Nagoya koryu. Following kites are his great works.
The frame constructon and dimension of typical Abu dako is shown in the last of this page.

Designated "Type D" and nicknamed "Koryu", the new design was somewhat larger than the earlier types, featured a more powerful diesel engine and had improved operating endurance. The "Koryu" also had a five-man crew, two more than in the Type C, but the same armament of two 45cm (17.7") diameter torpedoes. The Type D midgets displaced about 60 tons and were 86 feet long. Women Warriors of Japan
The Role of the Arms-Bearing Women in Japanese History
by Ellis Amdur
Introduction
The entry of Asian martial arts into the Western world has happened to coincide, through no particular design, with the transformation of women's role in society. Women of the late twentieth century have risen into prominence in business, science, and as players on the political stage. The victimization of women in domestic violence and sexual and physical assault is still rampant, but it is increasingly countered through legislation and political activism and, on a personal level, through women's pursuit of fighting skills to defend themselves. Ever greater numbers of women are involved in martial arts and self-defense training. For most people, identifying with one's predecessors is a strong desire. One often models oneself on an ideal that is personified in heroic myths or tales. For many women interested in Japanese martial practice, there is the image of the woman warrior bearing a naginata in the protection of her home and even on the field of battle. Although it is a glorious image, it is difficult to separate fact from fancy because of the almost complete absence of historical records that document the role of arms-bearing women.
Early History
The battle tales of Japan, chronicles of wars in the Heian, Kamakura, and Muromachi periods, focus almost completely on the deeds of the nobility and warrior classes. These tales, passed down by blind bards much as Homer's
