Kyudo - Japanese Zen Archery
40th Anniversary Celebrations 2010 Kyudo, or The Way of the Bow, is one of many ways or paths that one can practice to attain enlightenment. "In Kyudo, it can take up to ten years just to learn how to hold the yumi (bow).", says Sensei. Kyudo is a committment and practice for a lifetime.
Kyudo focuses on the balance of space between the archer and the target as well as the archer and the equipment. The archer's body and mind come together in an intricate, basic form called Shichido or "seven coordinations" . If done properly, this form brings out the natural dignity of the archer.
Truth, Dignity, Beauty. These are the essence of Kyudo. Truth is the result of the union of technique and intent in the archer. Goodness is seen in the courtesy and dignity of the archer. Beauty can be seen in the equipment, attire and ceremony of Kyudo.
As a contemplative art, Kyudo does not require physical strength and can be practiced by seven year olds or seventy year olds alike. One's never too old to take up "The Way of the Bow".

Books I recommend
These book help, but nothing replaces a good teacher Morisawa, J. S. 1984. The Secret of the Target. Routledge, New York and London.
This is the better book because it explains things in great detail. I like this book very much. Kyudo Manual. (1992?) Volume 1. Principles of Shooting (revised edition). All Nippon Kyudo Federation.
This book explains much more about etiquette and less about actually shooting the arrow, despite its title. It is available directly from ANKF for 3,000 yen. You can write or fax and they will send the book and an invoice. Volumes 2 and 3 are not translated.

Part one - what got me going
I first started to learn kyudo in 1988 when friends at work (University of Tsukuba) invited me to join their club. The club - called the Sakura Kyudo Kai - was held at the university kyudo dojo, quite close to my department. The members consisted of all kinds of people, not necessarily connected to the university. Any new member was welcome. I was lucky that the university had a rather salubrious 12 target dojo, with a small three target dojo at the side for special purposes, including the Sakura club. I became good friends with the professor of kyudo, Mori-sensei, and he allowed me to come and practice any time, so I often came lunchtimes.

Kyudo - the Way of the Bow
Centuries ago in Japan, archery was regarded as the highest discipline of the Samurai warrior. Then, as the bow lost its significance as a weapon of war, and under the influence of Buddhism, Shinto, Daoism and Confucianism, Japanese archery evolved into Kyudo, the "Way of the Bow", a powerful and highly refined contemplative practice. Kyudo, as taught by Kanjuro Shibata XX, is not a competitive sport and marksmanship is regarded as relatively unimportant. According to Shibata Sensei, a master of the Heki Ryu Bishu Chikurin-ha school of Kyudo, the ultimate goal of Kyudo is to polish the mind - the same as in sitting meditation. "One is not polishing one's shooting style or technique, but the mind. The dignity of shooting is the important point. This is how Kyudo differs from the common approach to archery. In Kyudo there is no hope. Hope is not the point. The point is that through long and genuine practice your natural dignity as a human being comes out. This natural dignity is already in you, but it is covered up by a lot of obstacles. When they are cleared away, your natural dignity is allowed to shine forth" - Shibata Sensei.

Kyudo
Kyūdō (弓道:きゅうどう, Kyūdō?), literally meaning "way of the bow", is the Japanese art of archery. It is a modern Japanese martial art (gendai budō).
In its most pure form, kyūdō is practiced as an art and as a means of moral and spiritual development. Many archers practice kyūdō as a sport, with marksmanship being paramount. However, the goal most devotees of kyūdō seek is seisha seichu, "correct shooting is correct hitting". In kyūdō the unique action of expansion (nobiai) that results in a natural release, is strived for. When the spirit and balance of the shooting is correct the result will be for the arrow to arrive in the target. To give oneself completely to the shooting is the spiritual goal. In this respect, many kyūdō practitioners believe that competition, examination, and any opportunity that places the archer in this uncompromising situation is important, while other practitioners will avoid competitions or examinations of any kind.
A practitioner will begin with seiza (traditional sitting position) followed by mokuso (meditation).
