LUGE
How do engineering and technology play a role in the Olympics? Peggy learns how gravity, friction and wind resistance all play a role in the sport of luge.
  • Would you like to take a ride on the luge? Why would athletes want to analyze their movements? How important is the start of the race? What kind and amount of strength does running a luge require?
DISCUSSION The Olympic luge event was introduced in 1964 at Innsbruck-Igis, Austria. The word luge is French for "racing sled." Lugers careen down the course feet first while lying on their backs. The luge sled was originally controlled by a hand-held strap which guided the front of the runner. Now luges are steered by the lugers exerting pressure on the sides of the car with their feet and shoulders. Sliders have limited visibility because of their body position combined with speeds of up to 80 miles per hour. Hairpin turns in the course and rules requiring one of the four runs to be run at night make this event one of the most dangerous in the Olympics. It is so dangerous, in fact, that in 1964 a Polish-born British slider named Kazimierz Kay-Skrzypeski was killed in a luge accident, and later, two other German lugers were severely injured. Several physical forces are demonstrated by a luge event. One is

Welcome to the Wasatch Luge Club (WLC). Established during the winter of 1995, the WLC was created in response to the growing interest and questions regarding the sport of luge in Utah. As a result of Salt Lake City's Olympic selection, a new Bobsled/Luge Run was constructed at the Bear Hollow site in Park City, known as the Utah Olympic Park. The WLC acts as a point of first contact for anyone with a question about the sport of Luge, whether it is only general curiosity or a true desire to be involved.
The Wasatch Luge Club is the only club sanctioned by the United States Luge Association in this area. Our mission is to promote the sport of luge as a means of recreation for all ages, to act as a feeder to the National Team System, and to create a base of volunteers and officials to aid in the running of events. These events range from local club level races to the Olympics and beyond. Luge
The luge is a type of small sled on which one or two persons, lying face up, slide feet first down snowy hillsides or down steeply banked, curving, iced chutes similar to those used in bobsledding. Shifting weight, pulling straps attached to the runners, or using the feet accomplishes steering.

Competition
The first international race took place in 1883 with 21 competitors from seven nations, including the United States. The race was organized by hotels in the Swiss spa of Davos and took place over the 4-kilometer road from St. Wolfgang to Klosters. With the development of a more flexible sled came the "kunstbahn," or artificial track, which provided luge enthusiasts with a more challenging course. The first World Championships in the sport were held in 1955 in Oslo, Norway, with 52 competitors from eight nations. Two years later the lugers broke away from the FIBT, the bobsled and toboggan federation, to form their own Federation Internationale de Luge de Course (FIL). In 1961 at the International Olympic Committee meetings in Athens, three luge events men's singles, doubles and women's singles were added to the 1964 Olympic program.

Luge The object of luge is to get to the bottom of the course in the fastest aggregate time over a set number of runs. Today, the course is covered at speeds that can approach 55 mi (150 km) per hour, equivalent to the speed of a car on a highway. This blinding speed is accomplished on a device that has no brakes and where steering is provided by slight movements of the legs or shoulders to move the runners. The result is a breathtaking event to watch. In the nineteenth century, sledding (or sliding) was a popular winter pastime at European resorts and spas. In 1883, the first race was set up on a 2.5 mi (4 km) trail that joined the villages of Klosters and Davos in the Swiss Alps. The sled used in luge is a fiberglass shell with slightly raised sides. The two runners on the underside protrude from the front of the sled and curve upward and in. The front of the sled has channels that accommodate the legs of the athlete. When properly positioned in the sled, the feet contact the inwardly curving front portion of the runners. By maneuvering the runners, the sled can be steered. Directional changes must be done smoothly and delicately, since at 93 mph (150 km/h) a sudden change would be disastrous. A luge run begins with the athlete (or pair) sitting in the sled. To start the sled in motion, the slider grasps handles that are positioned at the start. Pushing the sled back and forth while grasping the handles to build up momentum, the slider finally pulls the handles back in an explosive motion to propel the sled forward and down the course. It is then that the run begins to be timed.

Message Board Ohio World Cup Date Change Madison County Gravity Fest 5 - Munnsville NY I have been participating in the sport of Street Luge since early 1993. It was introduced to me by my friend and teammate Darren Lott During my traveling days with Nabisco, I would spend a fair amount of time in Southern California (I'm from New Jersey). One day Darren approached me all excited. "You've got to try this" he said. Apparently, a French film crew was doing a story on Extreme sports and they heard about Street Luge and Darren at the Drop Zone (something else Darren got me to try). Darren had spent all weekend building a board based on his Street Luge days in the late 1970's and then he got his room mate to ride with him for the French film crew. Darren then approached me on my next business trip. He plopped me on the old "carpet board" while he rode his new board. I was hooked. I started competing soon after with FIGR (Federation of International Gravity Racing) and then EDI (Extreme Downhill International) and the X Games . The X Games was governed by the IGSA (International Gravity Sports Association). I've raced on the east coast of the US with the NSLA (National Street Luge Association - photo pages

About the Sport
Two athletes — Peter Minsch of Switzerland and George Robertson of Australia — tied for first place in what was called “The Great International Sled Race” of February 12, 1883. Their time: 9 minutes and 15 seconds, to slide down a four kilometre track joining the Swiss villages of Klosters and Davos. Luge races have grown considerably faster since then with refrigerated luge tracks and aerodynamic equipment, so that speeds now regularly reach 140 kilometres an hour or more and G-forces reach over 5G. Luge for men women and doubles made its Olympic debut at the 1964 Games in Innsbruck How it Works In luge (the French word for “sled”), racers begin by sitting on open fibreglass sleds. Pulling on fixed handles in the ice, they burst out of the start. After this explosive start, they use spiked gloves on the ice surface for extra acceleration before lying down on their backs, feet stretched out in front of them, heads back to be as aerodynamic as possible. Luge racers steer using their legs and shoulders, and brake by sitting up, putting their feet down and pulling up on the sled runners. The singles events consist of four heats over two days. The individual with the lowest combined time over the four runs wins. Men and women compete on the same track, but the women and doubles begin further down the course. The four-run format is unique to the Olympic Winter Games and designed to reward consistency, endurance and ability to withstand pressure - particularly on the second day.
