No that's not me, It's Kris Holm, the world Mountain Unicycle Champion from Vancouver and his riding level is in my dreams! Bored of mountain running or mountain biking? Try the same trails on a Unicycle! Tools Of The Trade: Norco Trials Uni
20" wheel. 150mm tapered cranks, Miyata seat. I learned the basics on it. It's good for trials (tricks etc) but wont stand a big drop. Kris Holm 24 MUni
The Pig as it's know is a lot better on mountain trails than the 20". 170mm splined cranks, Velo seat, Gazz tire.
The extra wheel size and the big tundra tire make a lot of difference riding over roots and rocks. The ground clearance for the pedals made the biggest impact for me. It's even got a Magura hydraulic brake, which is great for long down hill runs.
I really wanted a Wilder 6160 which has a super light frame but the cost was to high. Also I wanted to play with the brake and there are no brake bosses. Pig has a high wow factor!

Mountain Unicycling is a type of cycling similar to mountain bicycling, except the rider is using a unicycle outfitted with wide tires and shock absorbers. Overview Mountain unicycling is an extreme sport where riders use unicylces to tackle mountain biking trails. These specially outfitted unicycles usually feature a wide tire and metal pedals. Balance and control are a rider's main concerns while on the unicycle, as riding uphill can be quite challenging. Goal of Mountain Unicycling Ride a unicycle across mountain biking trails. Rules of Mountain Unicycling As a recreational sport, mountain unicycling has no formalized rules or regulations. Riders should pay close attention to restrictions that may limit access to certain areas. History of Mountain Unicycling Mountain unicycling began in the 1990's, on the west coast of the United States. The sport soon spread to the UK and Australia. Meetings and events are now held in many countries throughout the world. Mountain Unicycling Equipment Helmet
Unicycle Mountain Unicycling Safety Surprisingly, mountain unicycling is a relatively safe sport. Unicycles are direct drive, which keeps them at very low speeds. This being the case, the most common injuries sustained are scraped knees and elbows.

  • Why someone would ride a unicycle? How its even possible to ride one? When did you learn? How long did it take to learn? Can you teach someone else? How much does a unicycle cost and where can you buy one? Where do you ride? Who do you ride with? What can you do on a unicycle?

What Makes People be Engaged About Unicycling?
This question is a good question to ask anytime you encounter seeing something that really engages people.  Whether you are curious from the perspective of a company leader for employee engagement, a parent wanting to engage their children more or part of a group or organization where you want to have more activity in it through engaging others, understanding this question will help to create the atmosphere and interest that you want for engaging others. So, I think there are 3 things that answer this question about why mountain unicycling is so engaging.
  • Special skills and talents are needed
Unique and Intriguing
Difficult and Dangerous
Another reason people are so engaged about mountain unicycling is because it is so difficult.  To learn takes hours of practice and it is a sport that requires great balance.  No one can simply start unicycling without practice and that difficult nature about it makes it something of interest.

One theory of the advent of the unicycle stems from the popularity of the penny-farthing (or "Ordinary") during the late 19th century. Since the pedal and cranks were connected directly to the front axle, the rear wheel would go up in the air and the rider would be moved slightly forward. Many penny-farthing owners discovered they could dispense with the frame and just ride the front wheel and handlebars. Evidence for this theory of development can reportedly be found in pictures from the late 19th century showing unicycles with large wheels. Over the years, unicycle enthusiasts have inspired manufacturers to create new designs, such as seatless (" ultimate wheel ") and tall ("giraffe") unicycles. During the late 1980s some extreme sportsmen took an interest in the unicycle and started off-road unicycling (MUni(Mountain Unicycling)).

Michael J. Rosen "There's Just Something Satisfying About Taking an Inherently Unstable Vehicle Like a Unicycle, and Riding it Places Nobody Thought it Could Go." - from www.unicyling.com Imagine all the most hazardous and rugged terrains Ford might use to film its new 4 x 4 truck commercial. You there? Now go and grab your unicycle out of the truck bed, hop on, and start pedaling. This is mountain unicycling , commonly called MUni (as in Mountain Unicycle) by those uncommonly fearless folks with an unmatched sense of equilibrium and an unequaled lack of common sense. MUni riders take their one-wheeled wonders through forests, across rocky topography, into creeks, along ledges, on ice, and over six-foot drops by taking on the "awesome challenge of mastering the skills to maneuver, balance, and react...over difficult terrain." At the International Unicycling Federation's Unicycling Convention and Championships (New Zealand hosts the 15th edition of the biannual UNICON in 2009), riders compete in an uphill race, a 1 1/2-mile downhill race, and a cross-country race through at least 3 miles of off-road course. Riders train themselves to navigate bumps and curbs, ride backwards, and hop, either to regain balance, hurdle obstacles, or pull off 360 air spins. No worries, though, "safety"-according to unicycling Web host John Foss-is the first rule of MUni.

Mountain Unicycling, A Venture Into the Off-Road.
Mountain Unicycling, or Muni for short, is just what it seems-unicycling in any type of mountain or offroad environment. Muni can be very similar to mountain biking, just with less speed. This does not mean you must have mountains to mountain unicycle! You can ride Muni on basically anything that qualifies as rough terrain, no matter where you live. All you need is ground to ride on that challenges your riding ability or even if its not challenging enough, is just plain fun.
Tips and Techniques:
A good skill to learn if you want to be doing any kind of Muni is hopping. Hopping is extremely useful when riding Muni and some rock, root, log, or anything else gets in your way. Just hop over it! http://www.onpedia.com/encyclopedia/mountain-unicycling
Mountain Unicycling
Mountain unicycling , also known as MUni , is a sport that involves riding unicycles off-road. Mountain unicycling usually takes place on mountain unicycles , which are equipped with strong hubs, fat tires and rugged frames for off-road cycling. Regular unicycles are also commonly used in mountain unicycling, but break easily. Mountain unicycles can be ridden on the same terrain as a mountain bike , or even rougher terrain. Mountain unicycling is a slower-paced sport than mountain bicycling , primarily because the lack of gears makes it impossible to go very fast. Unicycles are lighter than bicycles making them faster to ride uphill. Additionally, unicycles are also more difficult to ride than bicycles and cannot easily coast (although there is a style of riding where the rider rests his/her feet on the frame rather than using the pedals, essentially coasting).
Events
Each year, many unicyclists gather for the California Mountain Unicycle Weekend.
Similarly in the UK people gather for the British Muni Weekend (BMW)
