A mountainboard is made up of components including a deck bindings to secure the rider to the deck, four wheels with pneumatic tires , and two steering mechanisms known as trucks . Mountainboarders, also known as riders, ride specifically designed boardercross tracks, slopestyle parks, grass hills, woodlands, gravel tracks, streets, skateparks, ski resorts, BMX courses and mountain bike trails. It is this ability to ride such a variety of terrain that makes mountainboarding different from other board sports.

What makes these three the leaders in extreme sport participation and development is anyone's guess, but clearly the pioneers who develop these things have something in common over the great distances involved. The first mountainboard was patented as recently as 1989, with the sport gaining in popularity – and gaining its name – a few years later in 1992. Spreading rapidly since then, mountain boarding is a cheap and exciting sport that now has a great deal of fans and participants, young and old alike. It is notable that in all three countries development was ongoing simultaneously by people who were looking for exciting off-road extreme rides to be carried out in the seasons when snow was absent; wheels, therefore, became the primary requirement. Riding down a hill on a mountain board is a thrill like no other, hence the popularity explosion during the 1990's. Indeed, associations for the advancement of mountain boarding – such as the All Terrain Boarding Association UK – were formed in both the UK and other countries as the need arose for the organisation of competitive and display mountain boarding events, and also the development of safety rules and regulations designed to make the sport acceptable to a wider range of people. The competitive elements of mountainboarding range from racing to display acrobatics, and there are organised championships for all elements in many different countries.

You stand at the top of a rough grassy slope on a board attached to wheels. The slope is strewn with half-buried rocks and there are patches of scree dotted about. Mountainboarding is both old and new. The basic mountainboard is not really that different from skateboards that have been around for years. It's more rugged and the wheels are bigger with knobly tires, but the principle of turning left and right by leaning forward and back is the same. It's new in that it owes much of it's popularity to snowboarding that has only recently become a major sport. There are several basic mountainboard designs. Perhaps the best boards come from countries not blessed with even decent snow. The fittingly named 4-wheeled NoSno and the 3-wheeled Starkboard are from the UK, while the Outback is Australian. The bog-standard Mongoose, MBS and so on are all bigger, heavier and not quite so cool. For oh-my-god design, nothing can beat the DirtSurfer which is barely a board at all. This is the fastest rig of the bunch and is best suited to wide carving. The obvious problem with riding a wheeled board down a steep slope is slowing down and stopping. You can jump off a skateboard, and maintain fine control of a snowboard with the edges, but you need to be strapped onto a mountainboard and it has no 'natural' speed control elements. This problem is solved by making wide turns across the slope to control speed where there is space, hanging on for dear life when there isn't, and the power slide for coming to a complete stop. Low tire pressure will also result in lower speed, as of course will riding on gentler slopes, both of which are highly recommended to start off.

Mountain boarding is essentially very good fun. The sport itself can be completley safe and controlled or very dangerous, depending where you do it and how good you are!If you've ever snowboarded or skated before you should have no problems getting to grips with it, but just remember to take you time while learning the basics, to stop any bad habits developing. Basics of Mountain Boarding
The mountain board works much like a snowboard. Unlike a snowboard, it has wheels and hurts alot more when you fall. You turn by shifting your weight to either side of the board. Always remember to keep your balance and not to turn to far. Jumping is a little more difficult than turning. If you have a leash pull up on it and do small wheelies. This will also help on bumpy courses. Once you get this down you can try to jump. When you pull up on the leash also pull up your leg to lift the back. While in the air straighten yourself out so your level with the ground. When you land keep your knees bent so you won't break your leg.

What do snowboarders do when faced with the perennially powderless slopes of the UK? They find the nearest verdant hill and hurtle down it. Tim Moore and son go gung-ho in Surrey Take an oversized skateboard, replace the wheels with chunky pneumatic tyres, lash your feet to the deck and point it down the steepest hill you can find. For a sport so redolent of jaded Californian thrill-seekers with too much time (and skin) on their hands, it's a surprise to discover that mountain boarding is a largely British invention. We can, apparently, thank native would-be snowboarders, who eventually tired of standing atop our nation's many green eminences, waiting for them to turn white. After long weeks of rain, it's hard to imagine the Surrey slopes of the XPB Ride the Hill centre ever looking more verdant. The wet hillside is dotted with traffic cones, galvanised facsimiles of street furniture and plywood walls of death, and topped with a mighty Victorian gothic manor house - something to look up at when I'm sprawled on my back. And sprawl I surely will, as becomes plain when a groggy youngster is led into the reception hut as my 13-year-old son Kristjan and I are signing our indemnity forms. "You'll be fine, mate," breezes the accompanying instructor, patting a pale cheek. "Just a bit shaken up, right?"
