It is similar to other Indochinese styles of kickboxing, namely pradal serey from Cambodia tomoi from Malaysia lethwei from Myanmar and Muay Lao from Laos . Descended from muay boran , Muay Thai is Thailand's national sport. The word muay derives from the Sanskrit mavya and Thai comes from the word Tai . Muay Thai is referred to as the "Art of Eight Limbs" or the "Science Of Eight Limbs" because it makes use of punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes, thus using eight "points of contact", as opposed to "two points" (fists) in Western boxing and "four points" (hands and feet) used in sport-oriented martial arts. A practitioner of Muay Thai is known as a nak muay . Western practitioners are sometimes called nak muay farang meaning foreign boxer.

The military style of muay Thai is called Lerdrit , while today's "sport muay Thai" slightly varies from the original art and uses kicks and punches in a ring and with gloves similar to those used in boxing . Techniques
The basic offensive techniques in muay Thai use hands, elbows, kicks and knees to punch and kick the opponent. To bind the opponent for both offensive and defensive purposes, small amounts of stand-up grappling are used: the clinch. Defensively, the concept of "wall of defense" is used, in which shoulders, arms and legs are used to hinder the attacker from successfully executing his techniques. Though the high kicks at the head look spectacular during a competition, insiders of the sport claim that the elbows and the knees are the most damaging, sometimes deadly, to the fighters.

Muay Thai Weapons
Modern Thai boxers have an arsenal of eight weapons to choose from: fists, elbows, knees and feet. While it may be possible for a Muay Thai boxer to win a particular fight using exclusively just one of the weapons available to him, by properly mastering the use of each of his weapons he will be able to confidently face any opponent.
Vulnerable Targets
Every Thai boxer should be aware of the vulnerable points on the human body and must find ways to protect them.

Muay Thai , translated into English as Thai Boxing, is the national sport of Thailand and is a martial art with origins in the ancient battlefield tactics of the Siamese (or Thai) army. It evolved from Krabi-Krabong , literally sword and baton, the hand-to-hand tactics of the Thai army. The early Muay Thai bouts pitted different companies within the Siamese army against each other with few rules and no weight divisions or time limits. They became quite popular and eventually were shown in stadia across the country. In the early 20th century, time limits, boxing gloves as well as a uniform set of rules were introduced. During the latter half of the 20th century Muay Thai was exported to many countries and is now practiced by hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. Muay Thai is known as "King of the Ring" in kickboxing circles. These fights feature punches, kicks, elbows, knees, standing grappling and head-butts to wear down and knock out their opponent. Thai training methods develop devastating power, speed and superb cardio-vascular endurance as well as fighting spirit. Muay Thai training as also quite safe thanks to sophisticated pad training that evolved to keep fighters healthy between fights. Muay Thai has also proven very effective outside the ring and has been embraced enthusiastically by practitioners of a variety of self-defense, sporting, military and law enforcement activities.

The place to be for Kickboxing and MMA action
Last night in Amsterdam Holland, the very first tournaments welcoming the best kickboxing fighters occurred. Actually, they gather lots of people, around normal fights and super fights. This is precisely the reason why the mayor declared it wanted to prohibit this kind of event in his town, created some disappointment amongst the fighters, who didnt really agree with this decision.

Muay Thai training is very practical as beginners start off with Thai warm up exercises and stretches, specific conditioning, and beginner level pad work, all of which minimize the risk of injury. Many of the movements in Thai boxing focus on utilizing the core of the body, meaning the abdominal and stabilizer muscles located in the midsection of the body. As a practitioner develops basic understanding of the techniques as well as sound conditioning, he or she will start learning longer combinations and aggressive defenses. At the intermediate levels and higher, Thai Training methods focus on live training drills as well as sparring.
Whether you are interested in competition, self-defense, or just a great workout, Fighthouse will introduce you to the traditions and techniques of the famous Thai fighting system:
