The History of Muay Thai
The development of Muay Thai saw the transformation of the human body into a multifaceted weapon inspired by the weapons common to the time. The shin became the staff of the pike, used to block and strike. The arms became the raised twin swords of defense. The fist functioned as the jabbing tip of the spear. The elbow developed into the battle axe, used to smash and to crush. The knee, too, axed its way through enemy’s defenses. Finally, there was the transformation of the flashing foot into pike, arrow, and knife. As each part of the body became a weapon unto itself, a new close-combat fighting skill was born: MuayThai. Since its initial development, MuayThai has changed in many ways. It is now a modern sport, rather than a battlefield skill. But in its heart are carried old traditions and an ancient fighting spirit. Muay Thai is part of the cultural heritage of the Thai people. Their histories are intertwined. But their historical development is difficult to discern clearly. When the Burmese sacked the Thai capital of Ayutthaya, the archives of Thai history were, for the most part, lost. Along with them were lost the historical accounts of the development of MuayThai. What little we do know comes primarily from the writings of Burmese, Cambodian, and early European visitors to Thailand, as well as chronicles from the Lanna Kingdom in Chiang Mai. All these sources agree that MuayThai originated to be used on the battlefield in person to person combat. As to the specific origins, however, these sources are unclear and often contradict each other.

Muay Thai is a martial art that is considered more hardcore in its techniques than many other martial arts. It is a very distinguished art in that it is not very well known or popular except for in its home countries, such as Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia. While Muay Thai is the parent fighting style to the martial art and sport kickboxing, it is a unique martial art in and of itself. Many people may confuse Muay Thai with boxing in the Western world, for both sports use headgear, gloves, and wear similar uniforms. However, unlike Western boxing, Muay Thai allows opponents to use several body parts, such as knees, shins, elbows and hands thus giving it the nickname “The Science of Eight Limbs.” Muay Thai may have some similarities to Western boxing, but its traditions and philosophies make it a uniquely Eastern art. Muay Thai fighters will always enter the ring over the rope as opposed to under it – it is extremely important to them that the head stay above the feet as the feet are considered dirty in Thai culture. Many Muay Thai fighters will perform rituals before the fight and they may do certain things a certain number of times, pray, or do whatever feels best to them at that time. This is very important in Muay Thai because the Eastern culture (particularly the Thai culture) is a very spiritual culture.

    Description
With techniques including kicks, punches and the extensive use of knees and elbows, Muay Thai is often referred to as the science of 8 limbs. It is an effective and brutal martial art originally from Thailand. Muay Thai distinguishes itself from western kickboxing and other standup martial arts by 3 things: the clinch, the Thai low kick and the Thai roundhouse.
Thai roundhouse kick The clinch includes some stand up grappling, where the fighter tries to control the opponent’s head and use knees and elbows in this close range to inflict damage. The Thai low kick involves kicking the opponent's outer thigh with the upper part of the shin. To perform the Thai roundhouse kick, the entire body rotates from the hip and the leg is straight and"locked" just as it makes contact with the opponent. Other standup martial arts, have the tendency to utilize "snappy" kicks, which are faster but less powerful or menacing. It has been said that getting hit with a Thai kick is analogous to being hit by a baseball bat.
